Grammy Wrap-Up: Herbie Hancock Beats Kanye in an Upset, Plus Winners List

2/11/08, 10:00 am EST

For a while there, it seemed like the story of this year’s Grammy Awards was going to be all about Amy Winehouse’s via-satellite sweep. The embattled singer, who due to visa and rehab issues was forced to stay in London for the show, had already taken home all five of the awards for which she had received nominations, including Best New Artist and Record of the Year for “Rehab.” But when it came down to Album of the Year, Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters (a collection of jazz versions of Joni Mitchell songs) won the night’s big prize, besting Winehouse and sentimental favorite Kanye West. Other notable winners at last night’s big event were West (four wins, including Best Rap Album), Bruce Springsteen (three wins), Foo Fighters (Best Rock Album) and Alicia Keys. Finally, Barack Obama matched rival Hillary Clinton in Grammy wins, taking home the prize for Best Spoken Word Album for his reading of his book The Audacity of Hope (Clinton won the same award in 1996 for her reading of It Takes a Village). Stay tuned to Rock Daily all day for the rest of the news from the Grammy parties and behind the scenes, and be sure to re-live last night’s magic via our live blog. Keep reading for a list of winners.

The best part of the entire show was Crapye West NOT winning the album of the year. It’s laughable how that oafish turn absolutely DEMANDs reverance, and yet he, and his work, is so completely undeserving of it.

pathetic | 2/11/2008, 10:48 am EST

what next, MC Hammer re-doing Barbera Streisand songs,,,,,this is just plain weird!!!

Herbie HancocK??? | 2/11/2008, 10:51 am EST

What the hell was this guy or his crappy album even doing on the Grammies??

Kanye West | 2/11/2008, 10:53 am EST

,,,,,,,my mother,,,,,,blah blah blah. My mother,,,,,,,snore.

kcv | 2/11/2008, 10:59 am EST

the thing is, herbie hancock is a very respected and legendary jazz musician, he’s certainly worthy of praise…i like kanye west but he is a bit full of himself…it’s cool to see something out of left field win the award for best lp.

A/R Group International | 2/11/2008, 11:13 am EST

Joni Mitchell is an icon with a stellar songwriting career. Combined with the world-class talents of one of the best producers in music, Herbie Hancock, a well deserved win with an excellent album has been secured.
A great day for the Grammy’s!

Comfort Inn | 2/11/2008, 11:19 am EST

The Grammys are as stupid as the American Music Awards, just a load of horse shit music getting praise.

yea! nmot kayne!! | 2/11/2008, 11:56 am EST

thank god that bigot kayne didn’t win…watch I’m sure he going to blame it on Bush.

Used to like the guy, but his music is (like diddy before him) just him rapping over someone elses beat. Samples are fine and all, but at least combine a couple, or better yet use some obscure ones. but using daft punk (or thom yorke for that matter) is just blatent cheating. THEY made the beat kayne, so shut the fuck up and sit down. The song should be at least ten years old, otherwise its a remix.

Herbie’s always good and deserves every award given to him. The guy has reinvented himself over and over again and it’s alwasy good (remember “rock it”?).

Nathan | 2/11/2008, 12:04 pm EST

Herbie Hancock? sheesh.

Destroya! | 2/11/2008, 12:07 pm EST

So, does this mean you’re finally going to review this CD?

umm... | 2/11/2008, 12:34 pm EST

kanye is an idiot

JP | 2/11/2008, 12:43 pm EST

Personally, I thought the whole show was pretty bad… No real vibe, just the usual American Music Awards/People’s Choice Awards crap… You would think someone would do something memorable for the Grammys… It was good to see Daft Punk though, and congrats to Herbie, he deserves it, if for no other reason than longevity…

Bozo the Cop | 2/11/2008, 1:00 pm EST

It was nice to see Amy Winehouse win in several categories and that the Grammy judges did not discriminate against her because of her drug problems. She deserved to win.

BigAl | 2/11/2008, 2:05 pm EST

Was that the Grammys or the Grannys last night? Who was the producer? He/she should be sentenced to an eternity of watching reruns of this pitiful production!

Donnie | 2/11/2008, 2:14 pm EST

Amy Winehouse? Five Grammys?
What an utter joke!
When was the last time this award show was relevant in regards to recognizing good music?

craig | 2/11/2008, 5:06 pm EST

amy winehouse is the most hideous and talent lacking woman on the planet. rehab might be the worst song ever.

Jungleland | 2/11/2008, 5:14 pm EST

Not bad

Bruce, White Stripes, Steve Earle, Brad Paisley, Levon Helm, Robert Plant, Clapton + JJ Cale

Maybe 2007 was better than I thought….

“Barack Obama matched rival Hillary Clinton in Grammy wins, taking home the prize for Best Spoken Word Album for his reading of his book The Audacity of Hope (Clinton won the same award in 1996 for her reading of It Takes a Village).”

Great research once again Rolling Stone. Obama won the same award in 2006 for his first book. Obama 2, Clinto 1.

daniel bu | 2/11/2008, 6:53 pm EST

i think its great the show awarded woody guthrie “this machine kills facists” and the traditional blues album is something everyone would love to hear. read david honeyboy edwards autobiography…its great

Robert | 2/11/2008, 10:33 pm EST

I agree Scott.
I don’t think Graduation is the best album ever, despite the constant critical acclaim he receives. Perhaps it’s just hype and everyone gives him cred because it’s “Kanye West”, like there is something God-like about this rapper.

Having said that, I do think he is a great artist. But if his acceptance speech for rap album of the year is anything to go by, well then the Grammys did the right thing. To claim that that category is his award, and that he is most deserving of album of the year is vulgar to say the least. It’s turned me off.

crap award for a dookie album | 2/12/2008, 12:48 pm EST

simply stunning,,,,this is like prince doing a cover album of liza minelli songs,,,,,what the???

JB | 2/12/2008, 3:49 pm EST

Those who dismiss Hancock outright likely couldn’t even find middle C on a piano.
The guy is musical genius, whether you like the winning album or not (I don’t).
Take some music lessons (like ear training), learn how to play just a little piano, then listen to 24 year-old Hancock’s piano playing on the Miles Davis album ‘Four and More”; then write a post showing a modicum of intelligence, if you in fact possess any.

Anonymous | 2/12/2008, 10:17 pm EST

It seems like most everyone talking about the Hancock CD (definitely all the people saying it didn’t deserve anything, and a lot of those praising him for being a legend blah blah) didn’t listen to it. Listen to it.

olivia | 12/16/2008, 5:07 pm EST

herbie rocks!!!!he totally deserved this award.
