Single Minded: Guns n’ Roses Remix, Jay-Z Mash-Up, Clipse Mixtape and More

2/8/08, 12:11 pm EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Guns n’ Roses, “Sweet Ass Child O Mine” [DJ Donna Summer Remix]
There’s something about the utter bastardization of Axl Rose’s original intent that makes this irresistible. If Axl gets an earful of this, Chinese Democracy will probably be delayed even further, just out of spite.

Clipse, We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 3 [Mixtape]
Alert your local blogger: VA’s Clipse return with another mixtape about drug slinging and the grief it brings. At some point, Clipse will have to get another shtick. We humbly suggest the guilt that accompanies a McDonald’s Third Pounder, which is just as addictive as crack and twice as bad for you.

Various Artists, Cyndi Lauper & David Byrne Covers [Covers]
Would that this were Lauper covering Byrne, and vice-versa. Instead, it’s a host of other artists taking a crack at two opposite ends of the Eighties canon. You’ll be drawn to Smashing Pumpkins’ “Once in a Lifetime” cover — much like a baby reaches out for a lit blowtorch, because it’s “pretty.” Friends, resist the impulse.

Jay-Z vs. Fela Kuti, “Roc Boys (Mike Love’s Nigerian Gangster Mix)” [Mash-up]
Unable to secure a future touring commitment from John Stamos, the most controversial Beach Boy has taken to creating a series of Fela Kuti-based mash-ups. This is a step up from his days combining African superstars with Eighties one-hit wonders, bottoming out with the notorious “What I Like About Hugh Masekela” mixtape.

Various Artists, Tropical Static/Cuban Funk [Mixtapes]
Two insanely great mixtapes, one of which focuses on the laid-back sound of Guinea, Mali and Senegal, the other of which is walloping Cuban funk. So you now have a soundtrack for both Saturday morning and Saturday night.
