John McCain Will Stop Playing Mellencamp Songs at Rallies

2/8/08, 5:17 pm EST

Four days after John Mellencamp’s reps asked John McCain to stop playing his songs “Our Country” and “Pink Houses” at his rallies, the Republican frontrunner’s campaign spokesman announced today that Mellencamp’s songs would no longer be played as McCain’s rallying cry. Mellencamp, a noted liberal who was supporting John Edwards, took umbrage with McCain using his music as he traveled from primary state to primary state trying to prove to his party that he is a “true conservative.” According to Mellencamp’s publicist, “If you’re such a true conservative, why are you playing songs that have a very populist pro-labor message written by a guy who would find no argument if you characterized him as left of center?” McCain’s people agreed, and have ceased playing the songs.

Thing about John McCain though is he does’nt conform and basically calls things the way he sees them.
Which makes him more of a true Liberal in this day and age.
The way I see the free speech part of it though is that there is really no copyright infringement once something is put out in the public domain.
But who would want the creator of those works to hound them anyway?
Good riddance to the damn songs.

There is the exception of copyright infringement from the Dole campaigne though when “I’m A Soul Mam” was substituted for “I’m A Dole Man” where the song was modified.
What a low in campaigning that was.

This is the first thing in a long time that I agree with John McCain about. I have no problem with an artist asking a politician not to use his songs at his campaign rallies. Try to imagine that a song that you have written is being used by someone that you don’t like or support. So, it wasn’t a matter of copyright infringement. It was a matter of respecting the feelings of the person who wrote the song.

As for John McCain, he left “The Straight Talk Express” 8 years ago. This is not the same man who should have gotten the Republican nomination over George W. Bush. He is now a shameless ditto-head who will do anything to get elected. We don’t need another person like that in the White House.

Good for Mellencamp. Nice to see a fellow liberal not apologizing for caring about clean air & water, poor, elderly and sick people. Screw the oonservatives!
Only thing the believe in conserving is their money and control of the USA by rich white guys.

He alienates a potential new audience for himself. Should he care if Republicans buy his records and go to his concerts? That kind of thinking is why his career is in the toilet except for 50 year old recovering alcoholics. How many redneck Democrats does he think are really in the world?

Unbenounced to him Repulicans have been listening to him for years. Maybe everyone will come to their senses and stop listening to his pop rock slop!

Ooookaaay! Do you think you have enough zeros? How about 9 more while you’re at it?!

Maybe you should learn to count 100 before you submit your figures for the war!

Where did three trillion come from? I think 300 billion is the correct total–by no means a small value… but three trillion is a bit much, considering thats nearly a third of the US gdp. At any rate, Good for Melloncamp–the quicker this country catches on to its contradictory antics, the quicker labor reform will rise. Too bad edwards fell out.

I like Mellencamp…he’s a great artist! ‘This is Our Country’ was used by Mike Huckabee at the Value’s Voter’s Summit…I was hoping he’d use this as his campaign’s theme song…funny that McCain used it…after that?

Mellencamp is certainly entitled to compensation in the same amount he’d get if anyone played his song on a juke box in any public place. That is 25 or 50 cents. Everybody send a quarter when they here a McCain commercial, and maybe he’ll shut up.

Wow, Eddie Wilson. Spoken with true genius. You are a champion of words, my friend! Just out of curiosity, when did you get your degree from Bumfuck Community College, Backwoods Campus? Was it 1930 or 31?
