The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

2/6/08, 2:07 pm EST

We’re not sure if it was the arrival of Ryan Seacrest’s parents or the horrible montage of Fergie’s “Glamorous,” but Simon Cowell was noticeably meaner on last night’s American Idol, which took place in Atlanta. Cowell forced Josh Jones to sing with his back to the judges (due to his freaky eyes) and dashed the hopes of a guy who like, totally stood near Carrie Underwood when she auditioned a few years ago. But for the five best moments from last night’s episode, check out these quick clips:

5. Paula becomes enamored with “rock & roll nurse” Amanda Overmyer, but frankly, who wouldn’t?

4. Asia’h Epperson auditioned two days after her father’s death and teared her way through “How Do I Live.” Let’s buck the trend to praise her bravery and voice and note that she sounded a bit froggy and probably could have auditioned next year.

3. Elle Woods, is that you!?

2. Nathan Hite’s “witty retorts” are neither witty nor retorts (sorry, bro, you’re no Butt-Head), but he’s probably the first to ever audition with a Finger 11 track.

1. Unfortunately for homeless emo warbler Josiah Leming, the name Dashboard Confessional is taken.

Josiah Leming actually has talent. Don’t take my word for it. Google his name; you tube & his myspace have amazing examples of his songwriting prowess.

None of these people would look good on an album cover. Another round of Sanjayas. The contestants are worse and worse every year. I never watch the show, but the entertainment shows shove it down everybody’s throat so you have no choice but to know what’s going on.

They need to pull the plug on this show. Once in a while a talent like Kelly Clarkson (the only winner I like) comes through, but I think these people should have to earn their career the hard way, getting hardened through the club scene, make lots of demos and being forced to fight through constant rejection. Otherwise, the necessary suffering to be good is just not there.

I know for sure that one of these contestants has spent a good deal of time in various bands and doing the gig scene. Produced demos and started the same way many new artists have tried. The American Idol effort is just another avenue to persue a career. It is a little presumptuous of you to assume that none of these contestants has “Paid Their Dues” yet, also keep in mind the oldest of thess contestants is only 23. I commend American Idol for providing this avenue to success, and maybe you need to modernize your thinking a bit, this is the 21st century and we do have mass media now.
