Grateful Dead Reunite for Barack Obama Benefit Show

2/5/08, 9:23 am EST

Barack Obama wants to bring America together, and he has started with the Grateful Dead. The feuding members of the fabled Sixties psychedelic rock group dissolved their business operations several years ago. But last night at the Warfield Theater before a sold out election eve crowd, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart were singing “Come Together” on behalf of the Obama campaign in San Francisco.

Before the show, the three living Dead faced the press in a curtained-off nook of the Warfield basement; they had just finished a ninety-minute afternoon soundcheck that would serve as the show’s sole rehearsal. “I think that we all knew Obama was the guy for us, but we hadn’t talked about it because we’d all been doing our own thing,” said bassist Phil Lesh. Mickey Hart admitted that band members hadn’t seen each other in “years and years.” But “we knew instinctively, intuitively that we were all together on this,” said Bob Weir. “We came together and we’re doing it.”

Lesh was behind the sold out “Deadheads For Obama ‘08″ rally at the Warfield Theater. His eighteen-year-old son Brian has been working as an Obama volunteer and Lesh described seeing Obama speak at a rally last fall in Brooklyn as “one of the most electrifying experiences in my life.” The Obama campaign contacted him about putting together a get-out-the-vote concert.
“The first thing I thought of was to talk to these two guys and say ‘Hey, are you with me on this?’ ” said Lesh. “Not only am I with you on this,” said Hart, “I was just about to call you up for the very same reason.” Obama, who has never attended a Dead concert but is said to have Dead music on his iPod, filmed a special video message for the Deadheads at last night’s concert.

Well here’s the truth, Grateful Dead is still a great band. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them again. The reason why doesn’t matter. Everyone has to stand for something or they will fall for nothing. And lastly, OBAMA IS PRESIDENT NOW. HE WON. AND THE SUN ROSE AGAIN. Give it a chance. All you hippies out there, give him a chance. He could do great things and if he doesn’t..so what, half the presidents so far haven’t. It wouldn’t be the first time. Have faith.

J little | 10/28/2008, 9:08 am EST

The comment “the Best Presidential Candidate Ever!!!!!!!” posted by “Friend of the Devil” below, is a little eerie dontcha think?
now I’m an old Dead Head, closing in on 60 years old, have seen the Dead a hundred times and Phil is rite when he said all those years ago, “there’s nothing like a grateful dead concert”. The DSO is carrying on the music in spectacular fashion
But the Dead’s closest Political statement came in “Ashes Ashes” and that’s where they should leave it. It is amazing that our heroes don’t see that so many of their fans have no interest in their politics and when offered, will have an opposing point of view.
My boys from NYC who have plucked our own geetarz over the years are ALL in opposition to Mr. Obama for so many reasons, not the least of which is his failure to produce absolute proof that he’s a natural born citizen and is even Qualified under our constitution to be Prez, that it would take my own blog and a full day to record.
So in short, Bob, Phil and Mickey, you’ve aligned yourselves with Barbara Streisand!!! Forget about Rev Wright, Flager and the rest of the anarchists. So shut up and play.
Dearest deadheads this is bad.

Hold the phone! | 10/26/2008, 6:28 am EST

My god, I can’t believe the negativity of some of these writers. To say that The Dead getting behind Obama is wrong and to think Jerry wouldn’t have got behind him is pure bull. You self-righteous swine living in some purist fantasy. And the guy who called Obama an Uncle Tom, you racist pig, you should have your nuts smashed with a freakin ballpeen hammer. If the Dead are optimistic about Obama, who are any of you to shit on that? You’re a bunch of sewer rats gnawing on your own self-hatred. Only sewers of doubt and killers of life get down on anyone else who has passion, no matter what it’s for. I hope someday you’ll escape the negativewarp you’re in and find true freedom.

you know… aleister crowley thought hitler was pretty cool too…later he claimed his remarks were “satire”.

gypsy | 10/24/2008, 4:36 pm EST

The Grateful Dead have had a profound impact on my entire life. The most important cultural theme being freedom of thought and being. This is really really disgusting. Anybody remember how when we were lined up at shows people would start to make sheep noises until everyone was bleeting? Yeah well who knew it was a foreshadowing of this nasty little piece of pop-culture. I’ve just decided to consider Bobby, Micky and Phil dead to me. Kind of like when Cat Stevens became Yusuf Islam… The art stands on its own and it came from a sacred muse. Forget about the vessels they’re all crazy now. Luckily we still have the music.

geren | 10/23/2008, 2:17 am EST

Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Robert Hunter are members of Bohemian Grove so why should this come as a surprise? Like sheep to the slaughter…

WOW- Sounds like it was a blast . Love to see some video of this historic event. I know most of the people reading this really have no idae how good and importnat the dead live were so let me tell . They were amazing. Its sad that there really is nothing even close in this day and age. rock and roll will never die. viva la rock!

terrablue321 | 10/16/2008, 2:52 pm EST

I think you all need to relax, We willbe a better nation if the lesser of two evils is elected. Wish I could have been there

danj | 10/15/2008, 6:47 pm EST

i don’t get it either except to say i am voting for paul- the dead without gerry means very little to mean anyway kinda like the celtics without larry

Donnie Foley | 10/14/2008, 8:23 am EST

I think that The Dead reuniting for Obama is just another way to brainwash the hippie counter culture…because just think about it for a second, There’s a Dead show going on, then all the sudden a political speaker comes out to do his thing, while all the Dead Heads are standing there..the precentage of them under the influence of some sort of hallucnigenic drug, and this piolitical figure up there speaking about how good obama is and why they should vote for him, but really it’s just the governments way to once again use the effects of LSD and other drugs to pursway their way. Accept they don’t have to force the drugs into people this time…..This really pisses me off.

pissed off EX DEAD HEAD | 10/9/2008, 2:04 pm EST

Well I never thought I would say this but after 20+ years of following the Dead I am done with them,, unreal for them to get political and jump on this Uncle Toms bandwagon. anyone want to buy 800+ DATS, 200+ videos, and a room full of merch dating back to late 70’s and newer??

Jason Whitney | 10/8/2008, 10:04 pm EST

The THREE living Grateful Dead members? Did Bill Kreutzman die or something? I certainly hope not.

Phishd | 9/28/2008, 4:48 pm EST

I hate this, everywhere i look i see so many people saying Jerry wouldn’t have wanted this, well guess what, Jerry is dead, i hate to sound so cold, i love Jerry(even though i’m too young to have seen them in concert in their hay-day) and i always will. But everyon, stop bringing Jerry into this, it isnt about Jerry, its about Micky, Bobby, Phil, and Bill(hes playing the show at PSU). Stop trying to dig Jerry out of the grave, they aren’t saying Jerry would’ve voted for Obama, they are saying that that THEY WILL.

FRIENDoftheDEVIL0121 | 9/18/2008, 6:20 pm EST

THIS IS POSSIBLY THE GREATEST CONCER THAT WILL EVER EXIST IN THIS GENERATION. The Greatest Band Ever Playing for the Best Presidential Candidate Ever!!!!!!! This is gonna be SWEET.

Buff | 9/18/2008, 2:31 pm EST

The Dead are being fooled again. “Obama’s their One, he’ll take all their money and take their guns.”
Seriously, this guy wants change but not any change is good. He couldn’t change the hearts and minds of a hateful pastor’s congregation, and now he’s playing the race card with Latinos. This is not bringing us together.

Gman Blues | 9/11/2008, 8:09 pm EST

After a three year long hangover from a lifelong party… I’m ready for another Dead Party….

dewlover | 9/3/2008, 8:53 am EST

How could a band this good promote such an empty suit??

Deadhead07 | 8/29/2008, 11:41 pm EST

I just wish people would realize the Grateful Dead died in 95 with the death of Jerry. They are strictly The Dead now and should only be referred to as The Dead.

Heghnach | 8/23/2008, 5:44 pm EST

Politricks– Bob Marley > Don’t get fooled again The Who> The trouble with you is the trouble with me The Dead> The winner is not as important as the real loosers- citizens that have too little say in in a contest of money. Too many laws paid for by investors intent on personal greed at the expense of the country. This is a democracy wake up vote and take the country back.

BARACK OBAMA WANTS TO DISARM AMERICA AND JOHN MCCAIN WANTS TO KEEP US IN PERPETUAL WAR. IF AMERICA WANTS TO SURVIVE, WE HAVE TO ELECT RON PAUL A CONSTITUTIONALIST NOT TO BE SWAYED BY CENTALIST BANKERS AND THE WORLD ELITE. JUST MY .02 CENTS

I SAW HILLARY CLINTONS COMMENT AND HER CHARM NEVER FAILS ONLY HER ATTEMPT AT WINNING THE TICKET DID. I GUESS HER DEFEAT WOULD REMOVE HER NEED FOR DALTRYS PHONE MUMBER. SHE WOULD HAVE AS MUCH LUCK GETTING DALTRY TO SUPPORT HER AS BILL HAD GETTING MCCARTNEY TO VISIT THE WHITEHOUSE DURING HIS ADMINISTRATION.

Matty Alex | 5/26/2008, 11:03 am EST

my first dead concerts were in the 60’s at the fe and totally hooked but please remember this
there is no way obama has a chance in hell of being elected without the performance of bill clinton- think about it

Lady Deadhead from Idaho | 3/31/2008, 8:23 pm EST

Yeah, I missed the Dead re-union, being in Idaho. Location notwithstanding, some of you have missed it too. It’s all about change.”The sun will shine in my back door someday”. Maybe that day has come. Barack Obama is a decent man. Hillary & McCain; more of the same. Open your eyes… They are part of the political machinery that has been steamrolling over Americans, bargaining with lobbyists, and selling out to the “pro-life-war-mongering”, constitution stomping, big brother, elitist right! Educate yourselves and do some research to find out the depth and breadth of lies that spew forth from Hillary’s pie-hole. We don’t need another liar in the house; male OR female. She has lied about her experience. She never had security clearance and sleeping with slick Willy doesn’t count…Talk to Northern Ireland. She brought peace to them don’t you know? All of Ireland is laughing about that…Macedonia? She claims to have opened their borders… funny, they were open before she even arrived and Bosnia…well you know how she ran from the plane under sniper fire…liar, liar, liar. The list is long…She didn’t even pay the health care premiums for her OWN STAFF!!! Liar, liar, liar!!!! S-Chip for childrens’ medical care? Check out her claims on that issue…Don’t be fooled by the wolf in womens’ clothing. Ship of fools…sail away from me…

Another good reason to vote for Barack. I wonder who McCain would get to do a benefit concert? I hear the Right Brothers are available.

The Dead Sold out? They sure did, tickets were gone in minutes!

A true believer | 2/20/2008, 3:44 pm EST

I am saddened and awe struck that people would have such harsh things to say about a group with phenomenal musical ability and a distinctive corncern for the greater good. we should all embrace the dead for what the’ve done and what they continue to do for music and society. I only hope that those who make mindless, hostile attacks on people they dont know or understand will make an attempt to learn, love, and understand themselves and there brothers. one love

I think it’s awesome that the Grateful Dead was able to resolve their differences for a night and ay for a good cause. Obama is the change this country needs. While some people say the Dead sold out, I say that they just know a good thing when they see it. I bet it was a kick ass show to boot.

can’t the dead stay dead? If they’re greatful to be Dead, why do they keep rising from the grave?

Any vote for Phil is a vote for Bobby. Phil might win the nomination, but there’s no way he could carry the national election. Unless Bobby insists on more reprises of Playing in the Band.

eb | 2/6/2008, 10:09 am EST

Yea - long time head myself…

some fairly harsh words about the boys “selling out”, which I don’t agree with. They donated their time to help fund a candidate they believe in.

Look around you folks - getting indignant about these aged rockers trying to do what they do to, in their minds, IMPROVE things may be a waste of your energy - and I’d be willing to bet the most indignant don’t even bother to vote.

I’ve been feeing extremely indignant about what the hell has been going on in this country over the past seven years - that’s what I want to spout off about! We’ve got to improve things folks - or at least try.

Hell – I’m just amazed that Bobby and Phil shared a stage! Wish I could have been there – and if the set list I’ve seen is accurate, I will need a copy of that third set.

I’m just glad they picked Barack.

Thank you, Grateful Dead for your much appreciated help to my big night. All those ranting and screaming ex-Obama supporters running out of the stadium from your horrible music and becoming part of the many who now know what victory feels like!

Hey, do you think you can get me Roger Daltrey’s phone number?! Gotta find a band for my November victory party!!!

Love, Hillie.

“Won’t Get Fooled Again, would have been a great encore.”

Yeah, that would’ve been great: watching a bunch labotimized over the hill mock rock assholes do a complete hatchet job on a high octane early heavy metal anthem by The Who.

Sounds about as good a combination as smoking crack and listening to Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits!!

T-man | 2/5/2008, 8:17 pm EST

Won’t Get Fooled Again, would have been a great encore. Republican, dems, independents, are a joke. we are the USinc., not the USA.
Thanks “Dead Light” for whoring out. Won;t you please come to Chicago? errrrrrrrr San Fran, This Dead Light moment was brought to you by Budweiser.

Tom | 2/5/2008, 6:51 pm EST

Who, other than crack addled fools like dead heads, would vote for a militant leftist kook like Barack Hussein Obama?

ron | 2/5/2008, 6:29 pm EST

Jerry is probably rolling over in his grave, but whatever. If it takes Obama to put the boys together for a night or two –what the hell. Still don’t see what the big hoopla is, but then again, Nobody is my candidate…

Chattanooga Mathew | 2/5/2008, 6:08 pm EST

Yep, that sealed the deal…Jerry just officially rolled-over in his grave. Jerry admittedly stated that he would never allow the band and its literal platform to be hi-jacked by anyone, especially a politician; regardless of their ideology…he always contended that their “stage was reserved for [their] music and not some political rants, propaganda or endorsements.” I guess these guys can do what they wish but it is a slap in the face to this seasoned Deadhead (toured regularly from the spring 85 until part of my heart & soul died in August, 1995). If you get confused, just listen to the music play…

Sweet Pete | 2/5/2008, 3:38 pm EST

Going to go looking for this show asap.

California Voter | 2/5/2008, 2:18 pm EST

God bless all the candidates. They all have good points and credentials. I think, post 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, the American psyche yearns to rally around such fundamentals as unity, integrity, and a call to civic responsibility.

We are Americans and have the freedom to choose. But with freedom comes the responsibility to respect our fellow citizen’s views.

Goober | 2/5/2008, 1:41 pm EST

I was gonna vote for Hillary Clinton but you know, now that I see the Grateful Dead playing for and supporting Obama, I’m gonna change my vote to Obama, like you know what I’m sayin? I especially liked it when I read that Obama has some Dead tunes on his iPod. If he’s a fan of the Dead, then he’s gotta be cool and should be president man. I wonder if he also be smoking some mother earth in the White House too. This convinces me that I gotta vote for Obama. I don’t know what Obama stands for but he’s a Dead fan dammit and that’s enough to get my vote! Obama for prez! The Dead live on man!

What-A-Joke | 2/5/2008, 1:35 pm EST

How can you call this a Grateful Dead concert. You only have two original members of the band,Lesh and Weir.Mickey Hart was not in the band til Sept. 67′ two years after the band formed. This is not the Grateful Dead. This is like Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr getting back together and calling it a Beatles reunion. What a joke.

kay bacer stop lying | 2/5/2008, 1:32 pm EST

kay bacer, you are a lier, what I heard Obama’s wife said is that people should not vote based on the color of their skin or gender.

This kind of lies from Clinton supporters make me more likely not to vote for her in the general election.

One 90 minute soundcheck and a set like this!!! It just goes to show what thousands of shows did for their skill and psyches. Let’s take out the Dick’s Picks and commemorate - China Cat and Sugaree are timeless. As far as the race is concerned, it’s Hilary no and Obama maybe, but no as of this moment, unless he can appeal to the Bible belt, the Latinos and to Wall St. It’s his race to lose. However, McCain could become stronger if he softens on Iraq and immigration.

a vote for the Republican party. Clinton might win the nomination, but she cannot win the National Election. I for one well vote Republican for first time in life if she is the Democratic choice.
