According to New Study, Musicians Like to Sing About Drugs and Sex

2/5/08, 11:41 am EST

According to a new study conducted by medical researchers, thirty-three percent of popular songs contain explicit content and forty-two percent of songs hint at substance abuse. Rap was the most frequent offender, with seventy-seven percent of songs making reference to drugs or sex, with country music a surprising silver medalist with a thirty-six percent explicit content rate. The study also proves the old war cry “sex, drugs and rock n’ roll” to be factually incorrect, as only fourteen percent of rock songs contain offending lyrics. So how did the medical researchers come to their conclusion? They analyzed the lyrics of a total of 287 songs from 2005 that encompassed all musical genres. This reminds us of that Russian study that proved heavy metal’s subject matter is heavy. To further cement how useless this new study actually is, the researchers failed to draw any conclusions on how hearing all these drug references affects young listeners.

According to a new study? What the fuck? Was this study done by the Warren, I mean 9/11 Commission???

Rock musicians like to sing about sex and drugs? Wow, I’m am in shock!!! I am truly overfuckingwhelmed!!!

Whoever layed out money for this study might as well have set the money on fire and then let someone smash them in the face with a golf club!

If these losers had just listened to “Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll” they could’ve saved themselves a lot of time, money, and bother! Da-Duh!!

Whofan | 2/5/2008, 1:43 pm EST

bahahaha

lets name two bands… Kiss, and the doors… but I will only mention Doors songs right now:
light my fire, love me two times, moonlight drive, love her madly, touch me, LA women, hello, i love you

hmmmm? I wonder what those were about. When were these people born? I guess they are medical researchers, prolly never got out much – studying all day…
How much money was wasted on this?

Cowboy Bob | 2/5/2008, 2:47 pm EST

Yeee-hawww! I knew it! Rock and roll music is the music of the devil and this study confirms it. That dang music is polluting the minds of America’s youth. Now that there country music – that’s the music we all ought to be listening to. I’ve been listening to country just about all my life and I’m an upright solid individual with clean thoughts, morals and a good Christian background praise be to Jesus. Rock and roll just make a man want to do some drugs and cheat on the missus and forget all about religion. I’m happy this study was done because you all can see that Rolling Stone is promoting evil to your hearts and souls. If you listen to some Kenny Rogers and Loretta Lynn and some Travis Tritt that sure is some good ol’ home hearty music to soothe the soul. God bless America dang it.

re: Whofan | 2/5/2008, 2:51 pm EST

KISS? buzzzz. Wrong!

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have never taken a drug in their lives and the only song they have about any substance abuse of any kind is “Cold Gin” written by Ace!

That’s probably the reason you could only name Doors Songs. But do you want to know something? None of the songs you named are about drugs, they’re all about sex. The only song that makes the slightest reference to drugs is “Light My Fire” with the line, “You know I would be a liar, If I was to say to you, Girl, we couldn’t get much higher”, which was really referring to orgasms.

It pays to think before you post!!!

Re: re: Whofan | 2/11/2008, 2:06 pm EST

Hey dumbass, I think he meant that Kiss has played alot of songs on the topic of substance AND/OR sex. Good job on calling him out and then not mentioning that part. I don’t even know many Kiss songs but I know they have alot of songs on the topic of sex…

Oh and good job making yourself look stupider. Light My Fire isn’t
“slightly” about drugs. Go read a book on The Doors or take a Music History class and learn something. The Doors were one of the only bands during the era to write about the negative effects of….DRUGS! Fucking dumbass.

whoindatgarden | 2/11/2008, 2:09 pm EST

SO what if it is about sex and drugs. Big deal. There are more important things to deal with. Who really gives a damn I wonder.

Mr Burns | 2/11/2008, 3:15 pm EST

That can’t be right. That would be outrageous.

Pete | 2/11/2008, 4:09 pm EST

Hey Cowboy Bob, there was also a study done and it denies the existence of devil and your god, so stfu you ignorant moron, go read something useful.

Mark | 2/11/2008, 5:27 pm EST

Um, duh.

They also like to do lots of drugs and have lots of sex.

Film at 11.

Matt | 2/11/2008, 5:37 pm EST

I’m shocked, Shocked I say to find that rock musicians like to sing about drugs and sex.

The University of Pittsburch needs to lose accreditation for funding a study so blatantly obvious.

(Note the study was conducted by: Dr. Brian Primack of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine )

I actually am surprised that Country is more explicit then Rock. I am happy to hear it, however, as rock is usually the one criticized, despite requiring more talent then country.

"HeyCowBoyBob" | 2/15/2009, 11:22 pm EST

“HeyCowBoyBob” has created a sound that incorporates the sounds of Country, Rock, Blues, A little Jazz, some MOR and all with a Christian topical flavor. New cd in Early March 2009 titled “Moved Into The Light” will give you a clean content with sounds that aren’t very hard to listen to.

Me | 3/3/2009, 3:34 pm EST

I totaly a gree, todays music is nothing but drugs, sex, and to make it worse, most of the dancing is just rubbin up on someone and no acual dance.

Music is, and not wanting to sound cleche, our music is supose to truly speak to you, and not your libido. They must have an acual meaning.

rockergirl54 | 3/5/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Re: Cowboy Bob, get real, country songs are all about divorce, cheating, drinking, stealing etc.
They are not Jesus songs.
Rock is the GREATEST! It’s an outlet for expression and feelings. Although music has definitely changed in the last 40 years, the biggest change is that they are saying exactly what they want to say instead of beating around the bush. Rock is more direct in their lyrics now then when I was younger. Rock On!!

the voice of reason | 5/21/2009, 5:20 pm EST

only fourteen percent of rock songs contain offending lyrics.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You people have no fucking clue what you are talking about. Rock was actually the best genre for lack of offending lyrics! Music of the Devil my ASS. You people can listen to whatever you want, just dont go bitching about other genres until you get your shit straight.
