Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Add Heat To Memorable Super Bowl

2/4/08, 8:26 am EST

Last night’s Super Bowl was one of the most intense and dramatic championship games in recent memory, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ halftime performance was equally impressive. Despite the show’s opening flourishes, Petty didn’t trot out any elaborate pyro, strange props or guest appearances from Kid Rock; rather, he and his band simply delivered a four-song set of stout, no-nonsense rock and roll that included the classics “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” Check out the show-opening rendition of “American Girl” (complete with the odd guitar-impregnating-a-heart light effects) above and bask in the beauty of Petty’s charisma (and be sure to bask in the glow of the Giants victory while you’re at it).

Petty and the Heartbreakers were solid, although not flashy. But, that’s what the Heartbreakers do, and have always done. And I still can’t believe a dumb-faced mouthbreather like Eli has a superbowl ring. Doesn’t seem right…

Tom and the Heartbreakers rocked the Bowl. There are way too many people getting it all wrong out there. Criticism of them ‘playing safe’ are ridiculous. Now, if they had played their ‘420 Friendly’ content songs, it would be another scandal. And Mike Campbell smoked the stage. Holy, wickedly talented man.

harpo | 2/4/2008, 10:59 am EST

Petty did rock…he is an American original…and Mike Campbell was smokin’.

Cendor | 2/4/2008, 11:03 am EST

Great job, Tom and band. Hurray to the NFL for finally putting on a real, legendary, american rock band who did nothing but play great rock and roll. No gimmickry needed thank you.

M@ H | 2/4/2008, 11:08 am EST

One of my favorte Superbowl shows. Although, i was worried when he started “American Girl” his voice sounded a little shaky but he warmed up to it

hmmm | 2/4/2008, 11:16 am EST

It seemed like the audio of the performace was pre-recorded in a studio

And I think the Jordin Sparks girl who sang the national anthem was totally lip-synching too

harpo | 2/4/2008, 11:32 am EST

LONG LIVE Tom Petty….and that dumb-faced mouthbreather ELI is laughing all the way to the parade… something you Pats fans don’t have to worry about.Outplayed and outsmarted!!!!

Correy (a true petty fan) | 2/4/2008, 11:48 am EST

and they STILL sound the same. and no they didnt lip sync like most artist do today. ya’ll should see their movie its pretty cool and very interesting.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers ROCKED the Super Bowl!!!
p.s. Tom Petty is the best songwriter
in all of music history!

James | 2/4/2008, 11:57 am EST

This was a great performance. The Petty lip sync rumors were just ridiculous, he has sung those songs thousands of times, why would this be any different.

Mike Campbell showed why he is the man too…..killing it.

Sanchez | 2/4/2008, 12:44 pm EST

Was hoping for some Refugee.
It was solid.

Dan | 2/4/2008, 12:44 pm EST

Any guitarist here? American Girl was dropped a half step, but Won’t Back Down was not; and Tom was playing regular open chords on the same guitar for both, no capo. So, for instance, the exact same G formation in the 2 songs were a half step apart.

How did he do that?

TC | 2/4/2008, 12:58 pm EST

Yeah, I noticed “American Girl” was dropped a 1/2 step, too, but I couldn’t tell if “Won’t Back Down” was.

Anonymous | 2/4/2008, 2:02 pm EST

“American Girl” was dropped a half-step so it would be in line with “Back Down” without having to change guitars, so he would only have to change once (to the Tele’, for “Fallin’” and “Dream”) – simple as that.

TK | 2/4/2008, 2:05 pm EST

Dan & TC

I think that “I Won’t Back Down” was in a different key also. They changed the key the song was in and played it on guitars tuned 1/2 step down.

I think Petty originaly played in key of “A”

Dan | 2/4/2008, 3:45 pm EST

American Girl is originally in D. Last night it was D flat. Won’t Back Down is originally in G, and was so last night. But he used the same open chord formations. For instance, playing an open G on American Girl, and it was actually G flat. OPen G on Won’t Back Down was actual G. How did he do that?

J & J | 2/4/2008, 4:19 pm EST

Was ok…thought woulda been cool if Tom had brought out a “special guest” like Bob Dylan or Ringo to form like a “new’ Traveling Wilburys troupe….I need more cache for the Super Bowl ..woulda liked a Shakira , Van Halen , Beyonce, type of show ..maybe next year

anonymous | 2/4/2008, 5:04 pm EST

I think it was probably lip-synched. It’s sad to say, but I doubt Superbowl entertainment people want to risk anything, so they probably pre-recorded the performance to prevent people from swearing, etc.

STONE | 2/4/2008, 6:21 pm EST

WHO CARES WHAT KEY OR CHORD HE PLAYED! ! ! ITS CALLED ROCK-N-F’IN ROOL

John Aquino | 2/4/2008, 6:22 pm EST

TP& the Heartbreakers are one of the true great American rock bands still playing and making great music! They had to play songs that were relative to a Super Bowl audience. Sure I would have loved to heard Don’t Do Me Like That, The Waiting, Change of Heart and Refugee rock the Super Bowl but those songs have more adult messages. If you haven’t seen them live you really can’t knock them. They are one of the elite rock and roll bands. Look for a Mudcrutch album in April – Tom with his band before the Heartbreakers. Dan LeBatard on ESPN knocked the choice of TP – he doesn’t know sports let alone music. Tom’s last CD (Highway Companion in ‘06) was one of the best of the year. Yeah Mike Campbell smoked!!!!!!!! Finally a Super Bowl halftime act worth watching.

joe | 2/4/2008, 6:50 pm EST

Sorry, but Tom is irrelevant and, prerecorded or not, was quite boring, as I expected.

sy | 2/4/2008, 7:24 pm EST

At least one Tom brought his A-game that day

Ron | 2/9/2008, 10:12 am EST

Yes, TP is really irrelevant… each year he tours it is one of the highest grossing of the year despite low ticket prices … he continues to release albums to critical and commercial success … his music has graced the Super Bowl and NBA Finals in recent years. Totally irrelevant? What is your definition of relevant? Stints in and out of mental institutions? Being denied a Visa due to drug use? I’ll take TP’s brand of irrelevance anyday.

Steve | 2/9/2008, 12:52 pm EST

Thought Petty& company were very solid and didplay live-no lip syncing. As a guitarist and writer of similar style, I would have pounced had I heard dubbed vocal or instruments. They were all live and in excellent tune. I’m rather new among Petty fans but my enjoyment was deep and heartfelt. Up to Paul or the Stones. Thanks!

Wilbury | 2/9/2008, 8:34 pm EST

What is with you people? Any Petty fan knows he doesn’t lip sync, EVER! He sang every word, the echo backing vocals heard in Free Fallin’ are pre-recorded however. They have done this in concert for years. Plain and simple, the best Super Bowl show to date, even better than McCartney’s.

MGB | 2/9/2008, 9:53 pm EST

TPHB ROCKED !!!! ’nuff said

R U Kiddin me? | 2/9/2008, 11:19 pm EST

That was a weak performance.
Why didn’t he at least do a medley of songs instead of 3 or 4 that everyone has heard thousands of times? I can’t believe that he got away with that for the amount of money that he was paid.
Sorry, I don’t have to agree.

Mike Campbell played an absolutely flawless set. For those that don;t know him it propably sounded from the can, but us TP fans know….he is the cleanest, slickest, string player ever….ever….
Tom petty is also a perfectionist and just sang HIS songs…he wrote, he sings em’…and if it sounded to good to be tru…well, go see him live..you’ll get a more animated show with exactly the same sound…and dont forget Tench…these guys are the tightest band in Rock…always have been and always will (propably)

eric | 2/10/2008, 7:19 am EST

if you think tom was lipsyncing then you are an idiot, and were probably wishing for madonna show

TP&TH were not always a fave band of mine, they were OK, enjoyable to listen to. THEN, I saw them live. Without doubt, the tightest group of musicians I have ever witnessed. The Super Bowl performance was awesome, and for you doubters, absolutely LIVE! Light shows and pyrothechnics are distractions from mediocre musicianship…TP, et al have no need for that, even at the Super Bowl.

The show was awesome! I was at the Super Bowl to witness his performance live and totally thought he rocked the house!! When I saw the video of the performance I got chills all over again. It was great to see it from a TV audience perspective. TP ROCKS!!

Girl@TheHighSchoolDance | 2/10/2008, 1:41 pm EST

TOM PETTY DID NOT LIPSYNCH! I was there! I was one of the fans rushing the stage for the show! I heard all of their run throughs at dress rehearsal. I heard the shows run through a total of 4 times live, and none of them sounded the same! Tom even sang different lines to Won’t Back Down then what the NFL had originally thought he would. You guys have gotten too used to “pop” artists and lipsynching from almost every other performer. Now Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers give you sheer perfection, pure rock n’ roll, and it’s too good to be true for you. It’s too good, therefore it must be fake. Do yourselves a favor and go buy a ticket to his concerts this summer. Indulge yourself in the real thing, instead of cheap plastic crap like Britney.

Carolyn | 2/10/2008, 2:33 pm EST

If you’ve never been to a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers concert, get some tickets & go to one. You won’t be disappointed!! And please consider buying the “Runnin’ Down A Dream” DVD Set. It’s one of the best “rockumentaries” I’ve ever seen. Totally interesting–you’ll love and respect the guys even more!!!

edie | 2/10/2008, 2:59 pm EST

see them in july at the Bank Atlantic Center….can’t wait..never ever been disappointed with anything TPHB has done…This was an excellant choice for halftime…Thank God no rap and flashing gold teeth…P U

PEGGY | 2/11/2008, 9:15 am EST

I go to see him EVERY time he’s in my area — if I could, I’d travel, as he only seems to tour every 2 years — THAT WAS AN EXCELLENT 1/2 TIME SHOW, they sounded GREAT!!!! Considering how bad the Stones sounded a couple of years ago, I thought it was just too difficult but Petty made it look easy, THEY’RE JUST AWESOME! And, OH YES, well worth the cost of a good ticket … GO SEE HIM, you will NOT be disappointed!

Deb | 2/11/2008, 2:52 pm EST

The half time show was excellent. Tom Petty was the only Tom that rocked that night! Sorry Brady!

R U Kiddin me? | 2/13/2008, 5:20 pm EST

Seems like Tom Petty’s agent/manager is posting here and promoting his ongoing tour. Yes, it’s the same show he did 2 years ago with no new CD since.
Yes, he ripped the real Petty fans off at the SuperBowl half-time show while playing for CORPORATE AMERICA.
Sad really, as he used to “stick it to the man” in his prime years.
Remember the infamous lawsuit against the recording industry?
Now he’s sold-out just like Aerosmith.
I’m done going to his shows 4 good.

PEACE

Carolyn | 2/22/2008, 4:46 pm EST

To R U Kiddin me

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are first and foremost great musicians. They make Music!! As long as they sound good and the songs move people emotionally, it shouldn’t matter where they perform or how “new” the songs are. If you stop seeing their shows, it’s your loss. And I don’t work for their management, though I wish I did!

I taped the halftime performance at Super Bowl. This was the best half time ever!!!!
I finally got to see it last night. Needless say my husband keeps telling me to put the ….TV off and come to bed. I missed his performance in San Antonio last week. I’m looking forward to see him perform next time.
