Marilyn Manson Scares Up Mayhem, Memories In NYC; Plus Photos

1/31/08, 3:00 pm EST

Though it’s the second round of Marilyn Manson’s “Rape of the World” tour, the current leg might as well be dubbed the “Return of Twiggy” tour. Save for a handful of Tim Skold-era tunes, the second of Manson’s two nights at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom was a celebration of the band’s screechy (Antichrist Superstar) and glam (Mechanical Animals) days. The pit churned to “Disposable Teens” and stood at attention for a combination of “Coma White” and “Coma Black,” complete with falling snow. A particularly animated performance from re-energized Manson and the return of prodigal son Twiggy Ramirez (who Manson called “my best friend”) made memories of the last two absinthe-soaked records vanish, and served as a visceral reminder of why people were so scared in the first place.

To see what the show looked like, check out our photo gallery from last night’s gig here.

I’m glad to see the heart of the band back together. The only thing that pains me is to see Manson without MW Gacy. The Heart of Marilyn manson is the lyrics and raspy voice of manson. The underlying gloom of bass from twiggy and the insane ambiance of Gacy’s keys. I’m curious to see what the 2008 release will hold.

“Erik:” you’re a douche bag. Go back to listening to your Dashboard CDs.

I saw Manson last night here in Milwaukee, and it was sensational. Loud, violent, blood-soaked mayhem. Brilliant.

Brian Warner is nothing more than a plagarist dressed up in a funny costume. I liken him to Milli Vanilli or the Spice Girls.

frankie | 2/4/2008, 5:31 pm EST

Yes! The real Manson is back. There is nothing better than he and Twiggy together on stage. If you freaks would shut up and listen once in a while you might actually understand. Maybe you’ve just got to see/feel it for yourself.

“Ah ! Yes, my “friend”, the very obscure Robert Christgau, with 2 Pulitzer’s under his belt and universally acclaimed as EASILY the best writer about rock and roll ever.”

Ah, one more. Why not? Well, I do know who he is and I don’t give a shit about him.

Rock critics are frustrated failed musicians who now spew their useless bile towards successful music acts. Being the best rock critic is like being the best Nazi!!!

And he’s won two Pulitzer’s, huh?
Tom Hanks won two Oscars. Are you now going to tell me what a great actor he is? And Al Gore won a FUCKING NOBEL PEACE PRIZE!!! Are you now going to tell me what a great . . . ha ha ha ha! Never mind.

So you can intellectualize it all you want to. He only says the same things that any intelligent sensitive music fan says, while he sprikles in ten dollar vocabulary words.

Okay let’s have a look:
“Its strategy is to camouflage the feebleness of La Manson’s vocal affect by pretending it’s deliberate–one more depersonalizing production device with which to flatten willing cerebella whilst confronting humankind’s alienation,”

Do you really think he’s saying something here? If you’re impressed with this shit, why don’t you read a dictionary cover to cover and then jump out a fucking window?!!

re: Christgau | 2/2/2008, 7:25 pm EST

yeah yeah yeah. if you knew something you’d be dangerous! If you need some academic to tell you what to think about rock and roll, then you hoplessly lost and know nothing about rock and roll!!!

You probably think Robert Frost is good writer too!!!

My comments below will have to suffice because I won’t waste my time reading another fuckin’ useless anemic word you write.

RE:Robert Christigau

He represents everything that rock and roll rebels against. Rock and Roll is about youth and freedom. It’s not for snobby academics who talk about rock like pretentious rich assholes talk about wine!!! Period.

And his reviews of Led Zeppelin are skewed and distorted at best.
Some of the grades are right, but just as many are wrong. And his commentary is usually nothing more than intellectual wanking.

I don’t revere people just because they’re respected by the establishment. There are a lot of things in this world that are respected that shouldn’t be.

Christgau | 2/2/2008, 7:25 pm EST

Ah ! Yes, my “friend”, the very obscure Robert Christgau, with 2 Pulitzer’s under his belt and universally acclaimed as EASILY the best writer about rock and roll ever. Shame you have no idea who he is.
Actually now I get it, you are a failed “writer” !! Who can’t understand why your wonderful prose has never been printed, you react angrily when you see an actual writer doing what you dream of doing, but er, you have no talent ;) Poor poor baby ! Er, pinhead look, 98 % of manuscripts are turned down by publishing companies, of the 2 percent printed, 20 percent of THOSE are successful. So don’t feel bad, you’re not the only failed writer on the planet, go cry with your other failures….

Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa | 2/1/2008, 5:15 pm EST

First of all, I don’t need a translation. Secondly, I suggest you buy two copies of Shrunk and White’s “The Elements Of Style”! One for you and one for your “writer” friend.

In addition, I suggest you take a few anger management classes.

Billy Hicks | 2/1/2008, 12:24 pm EST

Yes, having a vocabulary and having any sense of how to write is obscene isn’t it ? We’ve de-evolved into computer grammar spiced with “shit” and “dude” and “fuck”. “I was in a Wafflehouse the other day and was reading a book, the waitress came up to me and said, “Why are you reading a book ?!?!” Not what are you reading, but WHY” - Bill Hicks.
Oh and i’ll translate the review for you - Manson affects, oops, too big of a word, Manson “uses” filters and microphone effects to disguise his utter, ooops, too big a word again, to disguise that he can’t fucking sing duuuude. And he chastises people and the world for being amoral and (I know another big word, you can look it up in Websters) while his personal life is one long vacant amoral party…………….duuuuuuuu ude.

ca2 | 2/1/2008, 11:43 am EST

manson…what a snoozer…….i mean loser…i mean tool…..

“Its strategy is to camouflage the feebleness of La Manson’s vocal affect by pretending it’s deliberate–one more depersonalizing production device with which to flatten willing cerebella whilst confronting humankind’s alienation, amorality, and failure to have a good time on Saturday night.”

What a pretty vocabulary!!!

Yeah, this is what many reviewers do in lieu of actual writing!

Christgau brings the truth | 2/1/2008, 1:14 am EST

Mechanical Animals [Nothing, 1998]
If only the absurd aura of artistic respectability surrounding this arrant self-promoter would teach us that not every icon deserves a think piece, that it’s no big deal to have a higher IQ than Ozzy Osbourne, that the Road of Excess leads to the Palace Theater. Instead, his banned-in-Wal-Mart slipcase job will fade into the haze of records people found interesting at the time. Its strategy is to camouflage the feebleness of La Manson’s vocal affect by pretending it’s deliberate–one more depersonalizing production device with which to flatten willing cerebella whilst confronting humankind’s alienation, amorality, and failure to have a good time on Saturday night. Catchiest songs: “The Dope Show” and “I Don’t Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me).” Duh. C+
