A few weeks ago John Mellencamp brought Rolling Stone up to his 41st floor suite at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City following a sold-out show. After playing RS his new T-Bone Burnett-produced album Life, Death, Love and Freedom, Mellencamp talked candidly about the record, his forthcoming play co-written Stephen King and why he doesn’t want to play “Hurts So Good” anymore. What does Mr. Melonhead mean he doesn’t want to play “Hurts So Good” or, according to that interview, any of his old shit anymore? You think any of us actually give a shit about his new crap? We want to hear “Jack & Diane” and those other classic little ditties you friggin melon head. And we don’t give a shit about your patriotic songs plugging Chevrolet. We want classic Melonhead music!

John Mellencamp has just released hie 24th album, yet somehow you think “Jack and Diane” defines his whole career. That song is over 25 years old! The 80’s are over, so deal with it.

John Mellencamp has experimented with various musical styles over the decades. A couple of my favorites are Human Wheels and Mr. Happy Go Lucky. Yeah, those old songs from the 80’s are great, too. But John doesn’t seem willing to revist to Pop genre so I think the “Jack and Diane” era is long gone.

PS. Don’t be disappointed. He still plays Jack and Diane at his concerts.
