“Anvil! The True Story of Anvil”: The Year’s Great Rock Movie?

1/25/08, 1:46 pm EST

It’s possible to be a hard-core rock fan and still be unaware of the existence of Anvil, the twenty-seven-year-old Canadian metal band that’s the subject of the new documentary Anvil! The True Story of Anvil. Director Sacha Gervasi screened the film at Sundance last week, and while some moments depicting the band’s struggles are amazingly reminiscent of This Is Spinal Tap, the band is indeed real. Here’s some proof: footage of Slash and Anthrax’s Scott Ian jamming on “Cat Scratch Fever” with the group at a Park City, Utah gig plus a few choice scenes from the doc.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen — documentary, feature, short subject. Funny, sad, poignant, moving and real. A great cinematic achievement.

The year - 1984, the place - London, Ontario Canada. Wow! What a surprise. The night before my last day before going back to TX. Me & a friend had been looking for decent party scenes so we were out bar hopping quite frequently during our month long stay. Finally, we heard about a little pub so we went and lo and behold, to my surprise, there was “freakin” Anvil slamming out tunes on the stage. Not bad, not bad at all. In fact, they were actually pretty darn great. Too bad I never got to see them stateside. I always did wonder what happened to them, so I’m dying to see the movie!!!!

I can’t wait to see this movie as I fallowed them after seeing them with Metallica and then it was like they just dropped off the planet and when I saw Steve on That Metal Show and they were talking about the movie, I was surprised that they were still together. I think all metal bands need to come back, rap really sucks and new age rock ain’t in your face metal!!! This summer I plan on going to see DEF and Cheap Trick and Poison as they are touring and in June, Whitesnake is playing here in MI where I live so long live metal, I will be playing my metal records till the day I die and I hope Anvil reaches the dream they always had.

Anvil is the missing-link between hard-rock/metal and speed metal;I always wondered why slayer and metallica didn’t mention Anvil as an influence. The song Forged in Fire is their South of Heaven. It’s to bad that the metal world was not ready for them.

I first saw anvil headline at the showplace in dover, new jersey back in 1981.anthrax and yes metallica were the openers.seen them several times since and have five albums and a tour pin.after seeing rob play the drums i’ve been a drummer since then.would love to see them again!

It’s not a movie only about music, it’s about dreams, hope and friendship. They will make you laugh then cry and at the end: you’ll ask for more. The movie will be in theaters next spring.

ANVIL HAS ROCKED SINCE DAY 1#….I,VE BEEN A FOLLOWER SINCE 1984 check out “ANVIL” DOING “THE STONES” “PAINT IT BLACK” GOD BLESS THOSE WHO NEVER GIVE IN !

“Metal On Metal” is still a classic metal album and “Mothra” is THE classic metal sing-along track! I loved Anvil in my 20s and now that I’m in my 40s, I still love ‘em.

This is some funny shit! My friend just downloaded two albums from these guys then made me listen to it. I really had to laugh, did I seriously like these guys ?? The music is horrible, and the guy’s voice sounds like shit! Thanks for staying around though, maybe you and Great White can co-headline some club shows!!

ANVIL - they should be atop the metal world.
They have been true to Metal cause since day 1.
Maybe Slash should join Anvil, and dominate the metal world.

Steve | 1/28/2008, 2:25 pm EST

What the hell’s your problem, PocketRocket? You one of those dickless wonders who’s never accomplished anything himself, so feels that shooting down dedicated, hard-working musicians makes you a big man? ANVIL are a great bunch of guys, and long overdue for some recognition - I hope that this movie accomplishes that for them.

“They do it for the love of music “art for art’s sake””

You’re probably one of those people who think urinating on a statue is “art” too!

Iron Man | 1/27/2008, 4:46 pm EST

Someone needs to put this film in theatres NOW. I didn’t know the band before Sundance; I’ve become a fan since. Great movie; great story; great time. That mini-concert was one for the ages.

brad thomas | 1/27/2008, 10:04 am EST

After meeting the band though a friend i realized that they were true artist. They do it for the love of music “art for art’s sake” and will never stop because they have to express themselves. It’s who they are. Thanks for the expeience’s on the road. cheers and good luck with the movie.

Hey guys (and girls) this is an awesome tribute to all of those that stay the course of their beliefs….

Rocket Reducer No. 62 | 1/25/2008, 7:05 pm EST

How about the story of Iron Maiden Judas Priest Deep Purple or Jethro Tull (just kidding)?

Hey guys while you’re on such creative roll, how about a tribute to Accept or WASP? Dicks!
