Dennis Wilson’s “Pacific Ocean Blue” Finally Reissued After Fifteen Year Disappearance

1/24/08, 1:22 pm EST

After being out of print for nearly fifteen years, the Beach Boys‘ Dennis Wilson’s lone solo album Pacific Ocean Blue will finally be re-released and reissued as a two-disc set. The set will celebrate the album’s thirtieth anniversary (even though it came out in 1977) as the copyright disputes that made it unavailable for more than a decade have been resolved by means of a Caribou/Epic/Legacy co-release. The scarcity of the record has made it both a cult-favorite and a high-priced collector’s item over the years. In addition to Pacific Ocean Blue, which feature the Beach Boys’ Mike Love and brother Carl Wilson on a few tracks, the set will also include previously unreleased bonus songs “which are still being sorted through by label archivists.” The album captures Wilson on the precipice of his drugs-and-alcohol-fueled decline, which eventually led to Wilson’s drowning death in 1983.

Following Pacific, Wilson promised to release a superior sophomore album called Bamboo. While the album was never completed due to financial woes and Beach Boys obligation, for the first time ever legally (thanks, bootleggers), songs from Bamboo will make their way onto the second disc of the set. While the exact second-disc contents are unknown, they will hopefully contain some of the sessions Dennis and his brother Brian Wilson collaborated on in 1980-81. The set, barring any last minute copyright issues, will hit stores on May 13th as either a two-disc set or a standalone vinyl.

Thank you very much to everyone that let their voices be heard, asking and begging for the reissue of Pacific Ocean Blue. And thank you very much to those responsible for actually doing it. This great album by Dennis Wilson desperately needed to be reissued so it could be brought to the forefront for all to hear maybe for the first time, to be collected by old fans who never bought it in the CD format, to be enjoyed and cherished by all as an endless classic, for Denny’s legacy. Lastly, thank you Denny, where ever you are, for sharing these feelings in your soul and recording them for us to enjoy forever!

This album rules!! I’ve been waiting for this day for a while and never thought it would finally come and how lucky we are to be getting Bambu as well!! Hopefully this release will further spread the word of Dennis Wilson’s extraordinary talents.

Sadly this release won’t include the Sound of Free single as that was released on the Stateside label (which is EMI). It will only include Dennis’s Caribou-era recordings.

At long last! My tape has worn out!

Hopefully ‘Sound of Free’ & ‘Lady’ will be included on the release!

Thank God in Heaven this album is being rereleased. It deserves a solid listen and reevaluation by the public as well. Not only was this a great album, it was a glimpse of someone who perhaps was a great songwriter, and never got to fully implement his ideas. I have this album on MP3 only, and it is a dream come true to hear that these labels have come to their senses for the greater musical good.

I’ve had it on vinyl forever, but I’m excited to hear the unreleased material.
