Single Minded: Cat Power, Natasha Bedingfield, Black Mountain, Drive-By Truckers and More

1/22/08, 11:41 am EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Cat Power, Jukebox [Full Album Stream]
Chan Marshall’s latest batch of covers re-invents rock standards with members of the Delta 72, the Dirty Three and the Blues Explosion backing her. It’s like if the Raygun masthead got to curate a Big Brother house.

Natasha Bedingfield, Pocketful of Sunshine [Full Album Stream]
The first single from Brit singer’s second features a guest appearance by Sean Kingston, which officially lengthens Kingston’s career lifespan by a full three minutes.

Black Mountain, “Tyrants” [Label Website]
Blistering track from Canadian quintet’s new stoner masterpiece comes out swinging, then promptly collapses into a bleary, druggy heap. Which, coincidentally, also describes most of S-M’s weeknights.

Jack Peñate, “Second, Minute or Hour” [MySpace]
Wiseacre Brit singer (and recent Breaking Artist) does a better job of summoning the Jam than recent-vintage Paul Weller.

Drive-By Truckers, “Self Destruction Zones” [MySpace]
Grizzly Georgia act continues to mine the surprisingly fertile middle ground between country and power-pop—not unlike early Wilco. So in other words, as long as no one lets them near those Neu! records, we should be okay.
