Oscars: Depp and Blanchett Nominated, Vedder and Greenwood Shut Out

1/22/08, 11:17 am EST

The Oscar nominations are in… and Rock Daily favorites Eddie Vedder and Jonny Greenwood have both been shut out. The good news lies in the Best Supporting Actress category, where Cate Blanchett is nominated for her role of Bob Dylan alter-ego Jude Quinn in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There (Blanchett also picked up a Best Actress nod for playing the title role in Elizabeth: The Golden Age; this is the second time she’s been nominated for playing that character). Rolling Stone cover boy Johnny Depp also snagged a nomination, getting a Best Actor nod for his starring role in Sweeney Todd.

On the music front, Jonny Greenwood’s score for There Will Be Blood was disqualified from the competition despite already picking up a Critic’s Choice Award and getting nominated for a British Academy Award. Eddie Vedder’s omission is confusing, as his “Guaranteed” from Into the Wild seemed to be a shoe-in for Oscar love after winning a Golden Globe. The Best Song category is dominated by fairy tale film Enchanted, which took three of the five nominations. “Falling Slowly,” co-written by the Frames’ Glen Hansard for the film Once, also received a nomination for Best Song. Barring Writers Strike-induced delays, the Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place February 24th.

It’s sad that a stupid ass film filled with fluff gets 3 music nominations and a film like Into the Wild where a true genius like Eddie Vedder doesn’t even get nominated…also see Man of the Hour for Big Fish…one of the best songs he’s ever written hardly got reckognized either! Yes I am a Pearl Jam fan!

somebody’s greasing palms if eddie vedder and johnny greenwood BOTH got disqualified…and that awful disney musical got 3 nods.

Burn Hollywood Burn!

Vedder and Greenwood come from a world where they’ve earned the respect they get through touring and connecting with people in person rather than as an image on a screen. Getting shut out of the Oscars just means there were others out there sucking major Tinsletown D*** just to get a shred or recognition.

Eddie Vedder’s a genius? You want to burn ME to the ground? Two Words: Shock Treatment.

They should make a rule in the best song category, just one song per movie. Never heard any of the Enchanted songs but I doubt they would light a candle to anything that’s on the Into the Wild soundtrack. Heck, it’s been a while since an Oscar winning song has been something truly memorable. Dylan’s Things Have Changed is probably the last one.
