Randy Jackson: “There Would Be No Chris Daughtry if There Wasn’t ‘American Idol’ “

1/17/08, 5:05 pm EST

American Idol judge Randy Jackson spoke to Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt yesterday to discuss a plethora of issues and predictions for this season’s version of the show. During the conversation, Chris Daughtry’s comments about the show’s decline came up, and Jackson defended the program’s credibility. “I love Chris. I think he made an amazing record that he sold extremely well,” Jackson said. “He’s a testament to the fact that no matter where you finish on Idol—even if you finish twelfth—if you make a great record and you got that kind of exposure, the public will resoundingly buy it. But the bottom line is there would be no Chris Daughtry if there wasn’t American Idol.”

Jackson also talked about how the show remains the best option for many young performers. “I did A&R at record companies for fifteen years. No company was out looking for these kids. I’m sure you can ask any of the winners or the runners-up: were you trying to get a record deal before American Idol? I’m sure they will all say ‘Yes.’ Were you successful? I’m sure they’ll all say ‘No.’ So now we’ve got all these people, and guess what brought them here? The quickest rocket ship to the top.”

daughtry probabably wouldnt be famous if it weren’t for american idol - randy is right as long as you are in the top you will get enough exposure to make it.

daughtry is doing all sorts of things now he just layed down a track w sevendust and i heard he did a song with another band as well. american idol opened up so many opportunities for him.

check out the sevendust track on itunes called the past. its really good =]

Chris Daughtry might have made it eventually in the industry without Idol but it gave his career a huge boost.

Why aren’t the record companies themselves out scouting for real talent? And why are they afraid to showcase their artists on tv or live radio? Is it because we’ll find out so-called music “stars” can’t sing?

At least all the Idols have a modicum of talent and some, like Yamin, are loaded with it and should have not had to be on Idol to get discovered.

Why is he dressed like Captain Stubing from the Love Boat?

“Red-Headed Goddess, do you have anything to say about this, or you are just here to rag on other people posts?”

Gee, I guess I missed the memo where I’m supposed to be accountable to you. I have the right to say whatever I want.

Getting exposure is part of the true formula of becoming a star. American Idol has given us some great talent and some laughs and entertainment. Underwood, Daughtry, and Clarkson have been a driving force in the music industry and have gained respect. Daughtry has no need to distance himself from American Idol.He delivered some good music. If you are going to like Daughtry , who cares if he was on American Idol. My idol is Elliott Yamin and I thank American Idol for finding me this guy so I can listen to him sing. So think about it… the media is great exposure for any singer and Rolling Stone is also a great driving force too. It is all good. If you love Daughtry , buy his CD’s , go to his concerts and have fun. That is what a good singer delivers. A good time.

re: Randy, are you jealous? | 1/20/2008, 9:44 pm EST

People who constantly ring the “jealousy” bell are mindless! Can’t you try to come up with something that’s thought provoking? Most of you sound like your in a 3rd grade school yard!!!

Randy, are you jealous? | 1/20/2008, 9:44 pm EST

Daughtry Are the hottest band out there. Randy Jackson is just jealous of Daughtry’s success! He is an idiot who needs to have his brain checked if he thinks for one minute Daughtry wouldn’t have made it without American Idol!!! It makes Randy Jackson look bad because Daughtry are way hotter than he could ever be and he is out to get him! Pathetic!

“The reason they are getting signed now is not because of their talent, it’s that the record company is riding on the coattail of a popular TV show.”

Gee, thanks for stating the obvious! I’m waiting for your next lecture on how free downloading has destroyed the music industry!!!

I’ll be waiting with bated breath; it should be riveting!

True, I think Chris had a better shot at stardom after being on AI. I just think it’s wrong to say that there would be no Chris D if there wasn’t an AI.

I love people that have to give you their resume every time they try to make a point!

“I did A&R at record companies for fifteen years.”

Yeah, and I sold cocaine out of the trunk of my car for SIXTEEN YEARS!

So, whadddya say to that, cabana boy???

Life Is Unfair! | 1/19/2008, 6:41 pm EST

ha ha ha This clown thinks he knows something about something. You could pick any three people who can complete a sentence and aren’t too visually unpleasant, and they could do same damned job!

These jagoffs have it made, and they walk around like they bear some kind of knowledge or important message. They don’t!

They’re way overpaid, of average intelligence, and can’t shut their fuckin’ mouths!!!

If they were in the real world; they would be the ones who get into fights at parties, have their girlfriends or boyfriends constantly cheat on them, and wonder why their cars always get stolen! It’s no accident that things like this happen to certain people over and over again!

But they’re rich and famous, so they are insulated from the consequences and reality of who they really are.

Spineless loudmouths who think they’re important. Unfortunately too many people agree with them!

This quote by Randy Jackson got my attention: “I did A&R at record companies for fifteen years. No company was out looking for these kids.”

Don’t you think there might be a reason why record companies weren’t signing these people up? They might have been not be very talented or appealling enough to most of the music buying public to deserve to get signed. The reason they are getting signed now is not because of their talent, it’s that the record company is riding on the coattail of a popular TV show.

I’m with you on the AI never happening.

It’s pretty arrogant to assume that he or anyone else can’t succeed without being on American Idol… “”

From what I hear, he tried for along time before AI and had yet to go anywhere other than bars.

Jughead | 1/18/2008, 2:32 pm EST

Rolling Stone, thanks for keeping me informed on the latest news with American Idol. I don’t hear enough about this show, and even though I watch it religiously because it’s one of the greatest shows of all time, I really enjoy hearing and reading much more about it. I truly really care about everyone’s that got kicked off and who’s moving on to the next round because that show is so friggin’ great!

I used to come here to RS to get some concert info, or read music reviews and get the latest music news, but now I come here for American Idol! Also, please please please let me know the latest on Britney Spears too! Excellent! Thanks, RS, way to go!

Sanchez | 1/18/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Keep covering the kareoke show RS, good work.

Shawna | 1/18/2008, 1:39 am EST

Yes Randy, but that was not the point…Chris just offered his opinion on how to make Idol better. Love Chris and still an AI fan. Wishing you the best on your new album!
