Marilyn Manson Says Led Zeppelin Is Responsible For Reunion With Twiggy

1/11/08, 12:22 pm EST

Taking a page from the Van Halen playbook, it was announced yesterday that Marilyn Manson and longtime collaborator guitarist Twiggy Ramirez would reunite for Manson’s Eat Me, Drink Me tour. Rock Daily talked to Manson hours after the announcement, and he shared the story behind their reunion. Though the two had already re-connected during a chance meeting on the streets of Los Angeles, it was Manson witnessing another reunion that inspired him to invite Twiggy back. “The turning point for me was when I went to see Led Zeppelin’s reunion show, and I saw Jimmy Page and Robert Plant look at each other for a moment, and they probably said, ‘Holy shit, we wrote ‘Stairway To Heaven.” I wanted that look again,” Manson explains. “I want to look at Twiggy and go ‘Holy shit, we wrote ‘The Beautiful People.’ I called him and I said ‘Let’s go do this.’” Plus, the duo had some unfinished business. “We started music together because we wanted to bring about the apocalypse, and we realized we didn’t finish,” Manson says. “The world could suffer much more if we were together again, and we really wanted to bring back the suffering.”

With Twiggy back in the fold after departing over creative differences after 2000’s Holy Wood, how would this effect Manson’s “Rape of the World” tour, set to launch in a week? “We’re still gonna play some new songs,” says Manson, “but I think we’re excited to play some stuff that we haven’t done in a long time. I don’t think it ever felt as right without him.”

While Manson is eager to return to working on his film Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, he promises that his reunion with Twiggy will eventually result in a new album. “The concept originally of he and I getting back together was ‘Let’s write some music together,’ ” says Manson. “But life’s too short, and this has to happen now because we couldn’t stand not being on stage with each other, and wouldn’t want to wait until we made another record to tour. So this tour will spawn another record, one hundred percent.”

So does this mean NIN needs a new bass player?

evergreen | 1/11/2008, 12:52 pm EST

NIN needs a new everything. Trent disbanded the band after the tour last year.

how dare he! | 1/11/2008, 1:10 pm EST

What is wrong with Manson? Is he that delusional to even mention Zep and his crappy band in the same breath. “holy shit, we wrote beautiful people”?? AS IF thats even anything remotely close to the classic that is Stairway. HAHA WOW
GET A LIFE DUDE

voice of reason | 1/11/2008, 1:15 pm EST

I can’t believe that hack has the audacity to even include his ‘contribution’ to music in the same conversation as that of led zeppelin or even van halen.

-manson-luver- | 1/11/2008, 1:18 pm EST

wow. dude dont go off tha deep end

-manson-luver- | 1/11/2008, 1:23 pm EST

how could anyone actually have the gut to say ANYTHING offensive about marilyn manson. hes the best rocler ever found! think twice before your critical thoughts!!

To both comments about Led Zep | 1/11/2008, 1:25 pm EST

You guys, you need to shut the hell up. Seriously, I am a huge fan Led Zeppelin, Van Halen AND Marilyn Manson, and all three bands deserve mention in any sentence together. It is a different TIME now! Different STYLES. Beautiful People is not supposed to sound like Stairway to Heaven, and yet it is just as good in it’s own ways. Only difference is the genre.

Jim Fear | 1/11/2008, 1:25 pm EST

Wow, Twiggy must have been going broke. Maybe this means that Manson is off the blow, will see the light, and make amends with Daisy, Pogo and Reznor (the other people who helped him write the truly great stuff).

Paul | 1/11/2008, 1:30 pm EST

When will this guy grow up? Shock rock turned into schlock rock a long time ago. Does he not have anything better to do besides attempt to “bring about the apocalypse”?

Pinta | 1/11/2008, 1:31 pm EST

NIN did not totally disband as Alessandro Cortini is currently in the studio with Trent working on new material.

wigga wit' no aptitude | 1/11/2008, 1:37 pm EST

Stairway To Heaven vs. Beautiful People… how egotistical do you have to be to make that comparison? It’s almost as ridiculous as Kanye West comparing himself to Jesus… and equally hysterical. Manson makes run-of-the-mill, gimmicky shock-rock, but Zepelin revolutionized rock and roll. Plant has never needed make-up to command an audience.

IGBT | 1/11/2008, 1:39 pm EST

..for gawd sakes put the gun in your mouth and pull the trigger. Do it on stage so we can all watch. Make a dvd of it so we can play it back in slowww motion.

Whalespoon | 1/11/2008, 1:39 pm EST

This Manson guy takes himself way too seriously. Why should anyone care? Why WOULD anyone care?

Prescribed Drone | 1/11/2008, 1:51 pm EST

great news :)

Callighan | 1/11/2008, 1:51 pm EST

Well, everyone can create art. And Manson’s collaborations with Ramirez/White resulted in great artwork.
Hope to see more from them.

Chock-a-doodle poo | 1/11/2008, 2:07 pm EST

No one is clamoring for Twiggy to return to the Manson fold. Led Zep comparisons aside (giggle), Twiggy won’t make it any more interesting. The late 90’s fad of Manson died after his Bowling For Columbine interview. Alice Cooper did a better job anyway. Manson is only scary to 50 year old born again house wives, and only interesting to fat teen wanna be goth girls.

Thor | 1/11/2008, 2:19 pm EST

A bit sad that Manson isn’t egocentric enough to know that “The Beautiful People” is BETTER than “Stairway To Heaven”.

j thane | 1/11/2008, 2:20 pm EST

Why do dumb twats like the below still think it’s about fear?

It was never about fear, and you were a dumbfuck for being scared in the first place.

And, correction, over 99% of Manson fans have been clamoring for Twiggy to come back since… 10 years ago, when he departed.

j thane | 1/11/2008, 2:22 pm EST

Wow, you people are raving idiots. I’m never coming back to this site.

Manson never made shock rock. If you were shocked at some point, you’ve obviously never truly been a part of this great big thing we call THE WORLD.

I’m done.

DITSSAGA san diego | 1/11/2008, 2:24 pm EST

Regardless of the power of Manson’s music in 2008, those guys definetely write some good stuff.

So just shut up and step aside if u dont dig em

awindow | 1/11/2008, 2:32 pm EST

‘Disbanding’ NIN is a silly term altogether, considering that we’re referring only to a live incarnation that was bound to morph over time. As well, why Jeordie decided to re join Manson for the tour (aside from nostalgia) I don’t understand. NIN and A Perfect Circle (not to mention Goon Moon) are far more artistically fulfilling than anything Manson could imagine in his drug addled/tired/washed up state. He was only ever as good as the people he had behind him….which used to be pretty good. Now, not so much.

Xynyx | 1/11/2008, 2:49 pm EST

Wow, how pretentious do you have to be to get offended by what other people have to say about things that shouldn’t even be worth getting your panties in a bunch about…

Plus, if you’re one of the “beautiful” people out there who’s still bitchin’ and moanin’ about the shit that he says and does after all these years, then you truly don’t have a clue, couldn’t afford one, and wouldn’t even know what to do with one if you ever found yourself suddenly struck by one…

Lest it’s written on the side of the bus that hits you at some point…hopefully…

Get over stairway. It’s more of a punch line in a Saturday Night Live sketch based movie than a respected classic these days. It’s overwrought, overdone, and overplayed. How is Manson’s contribution to POP music any less classic than zeplins? Eye of the beholder, my friends. (misspelled on purpose)

Harry Barry | 1/11/2008, 3:18 pm EST

Johnny Kickass | 1/11/2008, 3:24 pm EST

If he wants to bring about the apocalypse, isn’t there more effective things he could do?

Like support George Bush?

And if you believe in the apocalypse, doesn’t that mean you believe in God and Satan? In which case, isn’t Manson going to be on the wrong side? Wouldn’t Satan just throw him in a lake of fire like all the other suckers?

Seems he needs to re-think his logic.

awindow | 1/11/2008, 3:30 pm EST

Xynyx – to whom are you speaking? I’m not even sure it was me. Either way I don’t think anyone is upset…and that wasn’t very nice.

Music snobs will be trampled beneath the behemouth’s foot that is a reunited Twiggy and Manson. If they could somehow manage to get John 5 back into the fold, it may signify the end of all things.

Those of you who hate on Manson obviously don’t “get it,” and they should go listen to their safe little bands, like Panic! at the Disco or Fall Out Queen or insert lame arse band name here.

Thank gawd for Manson and thank gawd for the power of true rock. ANd The Beautiful People IS a modern classic – if people are still listehning to Dexy’s Midnighht Runners, then Manson is definately a rock immortal.

Olidratea | 1/11/2008, 7:30 pm EST

Wee. This sounds like fun! I loves Skold, but looking forward too what Manson and Twiggy will do! And for all th rest of the comments: Why can’t everyone just accept that people like different music, and don’t throw shit like this! I don’t like Led Zeppelin, but you don’t hear me biching about it!

roberto | 1/11/2008, 7:45 pm EST

Manson really rocks, Zep stays lost in the ruts. Sure, Led Zeppelin capable and all, and in the day they were great, but when they get together now it’s to rattle the skeletons to pay the bills, not to create something new.

roberto | 1/11/2008, 7:48 pm EST

Manson still creates, and rocks. Zep just comes out to rattle the skeletons to pay the bills. Sad.

Manson is a great entertainer/writer, however there is no comparison to the talent that is Led Zeppelin. People like Manson luver needs to get a life, and stop focusing on trying to be so unusual TO BAD THATS THE NORM OF TODAY….

Oatmeal | 1/12/2008, 5:01 am EST

“I”ve thought about being the Antichrist ever since the word was first taught to me at Christian school. In the Bible, the word ‘antichrist’ is only used as a description of people who don’t believe in the teaching of Jesus of Nazareth. He is not described as one satanic entity – as the beast of Revelation which many people believe – but as a person, any person, who deviates from the Christian orthodoxy. But through years of myth-making and fear-sowing, Christianity metamorphosed antichrists into a single Antichrist, an apocalyptic vallain and Christian bogeyman used to scare people much as Santa Claus is used to regulate children’s behaviour. After years of studying the concept, I began to realize that the Antichrist is a character – a metaphor – who exists in nearly all religions under different names, and maybe there is some truth in it, a need for such a person. But from another perspective, this person could be seen not as a villain but a final hero to save people from their own ignorance. The apocalypse doesn’t have to be fire and brimstone. It could happen on a personal level. If you believe you’re the center of your own universe and you want to see the universe destroyed, it only takes one bullet.

- The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell; Marilyn Manson Biography

StickAForkInMansonHe'sDone! | 1/12/2008, 7:06 am EST

I’m not sure MM could get any more delusional (the Led Zeppelin comparisons made me laugh out loud) and pathetic than what he comes across as here! Jeordie, a.k.a. Twiggy, was not the reason for Manson’s popularity/success in the mid-to-late 90’s…Trent Reznor was! True, Trent and MM did not write any actual songs together like MM did with Jeordie, it was, however, Reznor that agreed to sign him to his “Nothing” record label in the first place and who was also the one that spent several long, strenuous months producing/remixing MM’s first two, no, wait, three, records! MM owes Reznor big time, and I think if anyone was going to successfully jumpstart MM’s career again it would be Trent Reznor, not Jeordie White! Sorry, but that’s the truth. And since MM and Reznor are no longer on speaking terms and haven’t been for years, this rejoining of MM and former bandmate Jeordie White will doubtful yield anything new or remotely successful for MM’s floundering career. The only thing it will possibly do is provide some short-lived nostalgia for long-time MM fans who miss the good ole’ days when Marilyn and Twig were bosom buddies figuratively and literally. At this point in his career Manson is what he had always been without Reznor’s guiding hand/influence: a poor man’s Alice Cooper for the younger generations : (

phantomwaxx | 1/12/2008, 11:08 am EST

Whats worse than Manson name dropping Zepplin as inspiration to ‘get the band back together’?

Rolling Stone treating this as news.

You are a dinosaur RS. Go to bed.

Metal Shawn G | 1/12/2008, 11:56 am EST

Say what you will, but he’s got Evan Rachel Wood’s legs wrapped around his face, his back and probably around several other places on a regular basis!!!

His music and ideas are shit, but he’s conned one equisitely hot and beautiful, and extremely intelligent woman (not to mention sooo young and untouched) to love him, suck him, and fuck him till he can’t take no more!

Just for that, he’s pretty fuckin’ cool!

..you guys are as dense as a load of bricks. Manson is a SIGHT GAG and is on par with dwarfs doing hand stands on the carpet and rodeo clowns teasing the bull. Music is not his provocative. (is that too big a word for the sight gag crowd??)

Trombone Farts N' Trumpet Piss | 1/12/2008, 2:22 pm EST

“Manson is a SIGHT GAG”

Yeah sure. Manson’s into gags, restraints, humiliation, having his nuts tazered, and being slapped repeatedly and referred to as “Sharon”!

Yes, and from time to time he likes giving dwarfs fellatio, but don’t judge him too harshly!

Calling someone a “Sight Gag” sounds mean and uncalled for, and rhymes a little too much with “Scumbag” for my taste (language, language!)!!!

Oh yes, regarding the “bricks”:
When Evan rides Manson in the “Straddle Position”, she repeatedly smashes Manson in the head when he’s about to ummm . . . well, you know!

I hope that I have answered your questions satisfactorily. Thank you, please come again. And Drive Safely. Bye-Bye now!

jilly | 1/12/2008, 2:41 pm EST

I am not so happy about this reunion…..But first, I do not like Led Zeppelin or Van Halen so his comparison to them means shit to me,sorry to the fans of either just my opinion…..ok first,I am not happy about it because while I loved “Twiggy” back in the day times have changed and I feel it is a huge step back for Jeordie, manson seems like a sinking ship desperately looking for someone to keep his boat afloat,2.there was nothing “Cute” about a Skeleton in a dress and smeared makeup, strung out on drugs, with bad hair.
I have seen them ton’s of times,it wasn’t pretty, but at the time who cared I was into much of the same shit! For Jeordie’s sake I hope he will be strong enough to keep himself clean and healthy, and for fuck’s sake DON’T crawl back into manson’s shadow again I think he has incredible talent and it would be a damn shame to let Goon Moon go by the wayside just to re-hash old times with manson….but whatever makes him happy I wish him luck or at least some more money, lol
ok I think that’s enough of a rant……Carry on people,carry on.

Veritas | 1/12/2008, 11:37 pm EST

I am THRILLED to hear that Twiggy and Manson will be working together again. Manson’s most recent album had some decent melodies, lyrics, and concepts on it, but suffered terribly because of the lack of a good BAND. Manson’s best work has been collaborative; check the song crdits. Sorry Manson, honey, but you and Skold CANNOT do it all. I’m seeing MM in Boston soon, and I’m jacked that Twiggy will be there AND working on a new album with him…..

Good, now Tim Skold can go back to KMFDM and MDFMK! :)

Skold was really underutilized with Manson considering what he can do as a writer and musician. Check out the songs “Anarchy” by KMFDM or “Torpedoes” by MDFMK, both of which are written and sung by Skold.

Tim Skold is amazing. Eat Me, Drink Me is one of Manson’s Best Albums. I hope he still plays some songs from that album on this tour. I am very happy they are back 2gether. This should be a great time for Manson fans and a new album from both of them is just going to be amazing. I am a huge fan of Holy wood, Antichrist Superstar, and my all time favorite album Mechanical Animals! Mikey J | 1/14/2008, 12:18 pm EST

I am a little shocked that Twiggy rejoined Manson. Since 2002, in every interview that he has done on the topic of Manson, he has put on this almost “I want to get away from that image” front, and now he’s back.
Dont get me wrong, I think it is a damn good thing! I have been a fan of Twiggy since I saw the dopehat vid back in 1995, seen him with manson in 98 and 2000, seen him once with APC and once with Nails. At the Apc show in ‘04, he just stood there pretty much. He was bored and boring me to tears, not NEARLY the showman he was in Manson. He looked to have alot more fun during NIN in 2006.
Twiggy was the reason I even got into Manson, I knew he was responsible for Manson’s best.

I am going to see Manson in KC next month, I just hope another riot doesnt break out LOL.

rockstarr26 | 1/14/2008, 1:15 pm EST

i hope they play old stuff. that last record was a dud.

NoBlisterLikeShowBlister | 1/14/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Iam underthe impression . The “Image” twiggy wanted away from was the “behind the scenes” shananagans, for intstance the destruction of themselves versus the “destruction” Manson refers to that they plan to roll forth with. They are quite older now and Manson’s behavior is now upto Adult and less child-like.
Not to mention TWIGGY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF mARILYN mANSON’S MST TALENTED WORK. Once he quite writing and left the band the music has been desposible and nonrelavant.
‘Course Mr. Brian Warner (sp?) still owes Reznor and Mr. Jeordie White his career. Since THEY made him what he use to be.

Zep is overrated, you fuckers and your VH1 classic, you eat it up don’t you! You been told by your 70’s porn no shirt fake gold around the neck dad that Zep is great. No their not. You guys that get stoned and say “man this band wouldn’t be nothing without The Doors or Alice cooper dude” Shut the fuck up the doors needed Jim’s lyrics to sell records and Alice needed fake blood to sell a show. Every band needs something, Marilyn Manson just does it better and smarter, he sells out everywhere he goes and sells millions of records, What I think Page & Plant album sold 12 records,(wait) yeah thats right just 12.

Having been severely disappointed with heart shaped glasses and golden age of grotesque I hope Manson can recoup some of his street cred with this move and go back to his best. Marilyn Manson was an awesome BAND and that should be remembered – it isn’t all about the lead singer.

Why is Twiggy taking this step backwards? Goon Moon’s second album is the best music to come along in years. Twiggy we love you, so please stop going back to these washed up, pathetic and depressing shit-bags.
Marilyn and Trent? Gladys and Biff.
We want Jeordie White and Chris Goss back touring together. Not just the west coast please!!!!

As long as J keeps up with NIN and Moon I am fine with the move back into MM. Just make sure Brian knows, WHITE WROTE ALL THE GOOD SH*T!

Now, get back John 5…

I think its great that twiggy reunited iwth manson. That is the band that is where he belongs. The are a match made in heaven or hell how ever you wish to label it but, i feel this is for the better. but i have the right to my opinion. Manson rules no matter what anyway.

Heh…I’ll never forget that OzzFest show I went to a few years back featuring Marilyn Manson and the original lineup of Black Sabbath. The row of seats behind us was filled with young goth wanna-be’s that stood up and screamed when Marilyn Manson came on sage. After 10 minutes of the same ol same ol, they sat down for the rest of the set! Then Sabbath came out and from Iommi’s first power chord the entire stadium was on it’s feet – and stayed there! I turned around to see the kids behind me standing there with their mouths open! My only comment to them was “Kids, THAT is the way rock is supposed to be done!”

So for the few, the proud the ignornant that think Sabbath and Zep are just for us boomers, I suggest you give them a shot and see what real rock entertainment is all about!
