Panic at the Disco Drop Exclamation Point, Announce LP Title and Honda Civic Tour

1/10/08, 12:11 pm EST

In news that is sure to be a relief for copy editors worldwide, a rep for Panic! at the Disco has confirmed that the band will hereafter be known as Panic at the Disco. But wait, their sophomore album will be titled Pretty. Odd. (Creative punctuation wins again.) Panic will be playing their new material live on this year’s environmentally friendly 8th Annual Honda Civic Tour, which they’ll be headlining (the tour starts April 10th at San Francisco’s Warfield Theatre and wraps June 14th’s at Anaheim’s Honda Center; full dates will be announced later). While we take a moment to mourn the loss of the Las Vegas group’s exclamation point, Rock Daily would like to honor those bands who have made excellent use of it: !!!, Against Me!, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Los Campesinos!, Neu!, the Go! Team and, of course, Wham!.

wtf? | 1/10/2008, 1:53 pm EST

just saw on the colbert report last night that matt talib (sp?) admitted that rolling stone tells people what to like (since most of the masses can’t make up their own mind).

I’m fine with that fact, but if that’s the case, then why doesn’t rolling stone tell people NOT to like crap like this. they know it’s crap, just don’t want to offend their corporate overlords I guess.

Anyway, I think his band is shit and anticipate this album being the same drivel.

matt was joking around, btw | 1/10/2008, 2:05 pm EST

likroper.com | 1/10/2008, 2:32 pm EST

it’s always good to see a lowered terror alert status…

m | 1/10/2008, 2:52 pm EST

The exclamation point, nooooo. That makes me beyond saaaaaaad. *goes and sobs in a corner*

Michelle | 1/10/2008, 5:22 pm EST

I’ve got to agree with ‘wtf?’. Panic! At The Disco and their ’so called music’ is pure shit. I don’t understand how Rolling Stone can like these guys. Rolling Stone went from The Great John Lennon and Bob Dylan to a boy band who dress like hipsters.

=( | 1/10/2008, 5:30 pm EST

seriously? i will miss that exclamation point… a lot. i loved it. =D

Firith | 1/10/2008, 6:19 pm EST

WE WANT THE ! BACK!!!

Is just not the same without it!!

Mitsu | 1/10/2008, 7:04 pm EST

@ Michelle and wtf?

Despite what Panic At The Disco claims, they definitely HAVE changed.

Their new songs are all played on acoustics and include strings and horns. (No more synthesizers…) In fact, they sound quite a lot like the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

nathan | 1/10/2008, 7:35 pm EST

You want an exclamation point? Panic at the Disco sucks gigantic red-rooster d**k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shannon | 1/10/2008, 7:37 pm EST

It’s kinda lame how much I miss the exclamation point.

!

Gaby | 1/10/2008, 8:18 pm EST

ok now they sound really serious with out the “!” in the name, I have been a fanatic for like 4 years now (wow) and now without the “!” in the name there’s no “umph” or “Spunk” in the name. but the songs are awsome I do declare.

ryan's girl | 1/10/2008, 8:18 pm EST

that is the sadest news ever. wtf were they thinkin going w/o the ! ?? they’re getting pretty odd!

Anonymous | 1/10/2008, 8:25 pm EST

Wth
I’m gonna mis the exclamation point! =

wtf? I don't think so Panic! | 1/10/2008, 8:38 pm EST

How can they just freakin’ change their name like that. I WANT THE OLD PANIC! BACK(YES, the one with the !) and I want them back NOWWWWWWWW!!!!

chillllllax | 1/10/2008, 9:42 pm EST

the music that they put out is not the final cut. (on the acoustic comment)
but i think the new songs are great so far.
panic has changed.
bands change.
and they should.
i am sure they’re album is going to rock.
chill.
it’s just a name.

chillllllax | 1/10/2008, 9:46 pm EST

whoops.
change “they’re” to “their”.
i can’t stand bad grammar.

Nova | 1/10/2008, 9:59 pm EST

As much as we’ll all miss the pixel punctuation… An exclamation point doesn’t make a band. Get ALL of the new music in your ear before you make any judgments on this new Panic.

Panicing for no more Panic! | 1/10/2008, 10:00 pm EST

OMG!!! I want my ! back!!! C’mon wat are we supposed to call yall now? PATD?
!!!!!!!!!

Jess | 1/10/2008, 10:51 pm EST

That is ridiculous. Why on earth would they take away the exclamation point? Why can’t they just keep it there? I really liked it, and I don’t see why they have to change it just so editors don’t get mixed up or whatever.

Ahem. | 1/10/2008, 11:40 pm EST

Although I haven’t really heard any of their songs (not counting all those times I mistook their song that was on the radio for a new Fall Out Boy single), dropping the ! is a relief to me. Countless times, due to my writer’s sentivity to punctuation and rhetorical device, the ! after “Panic” caused a small explosion in my brain and a mini heart attack each time I saw it printed. Thank you Panic at the Disco for saving me some needless visual… well, panic.

Mr Gui | 1/11/2008, 7:54 am EST

Let’s get real people. One of the all time biggest bands ever, named themselves after a bug, The Beatles. For those of you old enough to remember, how many iterations were there of John Cougar Mellencamp. Change the name don’t change the name, what’s important is the music. A rose by any other name will smell, or in this case, sound just as sweet.

alli | 1/11/2008, 9:11 am EST

I miss the !….. but oh well… who are we to tell a band not to change AT ALL? If they don’t evolve, we’ll get the same songs over and over again. So….bye bye !

Elliie, 13 | 1/11/2008, 10:05 am EST

honestly i liked the ! a lot….
because then you coul dsay it loud and because it just made their name looke better when you wrote it.
i love them to tears….
R.I.P. explanation mark

Lizabeth | 1/11/2008, 10:10 am EST

no.
i completely and totally think that it was a bad chioce.
i don’t know if it’s because people are too lazy to put a !.

how the HELL do you just change your name out of the blue??!?!!
that’s like me telling people i “dropped the L” at school or something.
i want the old ! panic! at the disco back.
fuck spaces explanation marks rock!

Lizabeth | 1/11/2008, 10:15 am EST

@ Michelle and wtf?
oh wow…
for ONE if you don’t like them WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU COMMENTING THIS? to give an opinion or to talk shit about the band?

i’m extremely and undeniably saddened by this news.
i will NEVER stop calling you PANIC! at the disco.
ever.
YOU can remove the ! but i am still gonna wear the panic shirts i have with the !
and the CDS and everything else.
i liked panic the way it was.

SVUF | 1/11/2008, 10:36 am EST

Like…ummm…who cares.

Weeds | 1/11/2008, 10:57 am EST

Wow, Lizbeth, you’re a comic genius! You should be writing for Saturday Night Live! You’re a dolt!

RIP: Exclamation mark. (JOJO!) | 1/11/2008, 11:02 am EST

P!ATD write amazing music so if you don’t like it, do shove a sock down your throat because no one here cares about your opinion.

Imma miss that exclamation mark. =[

HAHA!! The album title is great. TAKE THAT GRAMMER!!!!!!!

Abagail | 1/11/2008, 11:13 am EST

this is horrible news.

something something blah blah | 1/11/2008, 2:54 pm EST

YOU’RE ALL LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lisa | 1/11/2008, 3:29 pm EST

dudesss calm down, its just an exclamation mark.
the band is the best with or without it,why should it make a difference??

bokena | 1/11/2008, 4:22 pm EST

Sounds like a creative marketing tool for a creative band

Mackenzie | 1/11/2008, 6:13 pm EST

Panic (R.I.P. “!”) At The Disco should be their new name :)

That’s all.

In loving memory of the “!”

X | 1/11/2008, 6:22 pm EST

i will miss the ! =(

meteorfreak777 | 1/11/2008, 7:57 pm EST

it sucks! why did they have to remove the “!”?

so long our dear friend, mr. ! | 1/11/2008, 8:37 pm EST

yea, im gonna miss the ! too.
but really, im glad they are finally releasing a cd and going on tour again.
im fucking ecstatic.

crimson | 1/12/2008, 12:11 am EST

it doesn’t matter,
they still suck.

Paige | 1/12/2008, 2:43 am EST

cool.
cant wait to get album.

pex | 1/12/2008, 4:11 am EST

Ahhh, almost everyone’s overreacting. Brilliant. Did the exclamation point make any significant contribution to their music that you guys adore so much? I highly doubt it.

It’s just a name. Let it go.

beanie | 1/12/2008, 10:51 am EST

christ_wurm | 1/12/2008, 4:24 pm EST

whoever thinks dropping an exclamation point from the name is news is pathetic. maybe these douchebags can donate the exclamation point to the soldiers dying in the war.

LizzieLover | 1/12/2008, 8:46 pm EST

well, the dropping of the “!” does somewhat upset me.
it set them apart from other FBR bands.
and yes i know of the band !!!
but anyways, The new album should be amazing.
for real. =D

huh? You have no idea what you are talking about. How dare you mention these talentless-corporate wind-up dolls in the same breath as those legends. You teenagers have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. This band is an extenion of N’sync; the same product prepackaged for a new generation. Good job losers, you are doing exactly as the man wants you to.

No band should need exclaimation points and make-up and fancy shows to be musicians. Thes “guys” sucks so bad, I can’t wait for this fucking emo fad to be over.

where'd it go?!!!! | 1/13/2008, 4:42 pm EST

I think the boys from Death Cab For Cute wanted it because they wanted to penetrate themselves with it!

jess | 1/14/2008, 10:37 am EST

Peter Wentz wants the exclamation point to shag himself with.

ficky | 1/14/2008, 9:39 pm EST

yeah. i liked panic a few years ago when i got an advanced copy of their cd and i turned a lot of people on to them. im not sure how you can say they arent talented. have you ever seen them live. ive been to close to a thousand shows in my life time and they put on one of the top 5 best shows i have ever seen. is their music annoying after a while? YES!! are they talented? YES!! they are a very individualistic band and unfortunatly got played out on mainstream radio. what are you gonna do? oh yeah, f— the !, they had 3 or 4 when they started and noone posted anything about that. oh yeah, cus yo didnt know who they were. dingleberries.

wonderland? | 1/16/2008, 1:05 pm EST

panic at the disco
is truely different.
many people claim to
say that thier like
any other “emo” band.
first of all thier far
from “emo”. maybe because you can’t see the true meaning in
their music people decide to
say thier like ever other band
but their not..
and what i think about the (!)
is that it is their band and
whats the point of having
band if you can’t do what you want
with it…so what im saying it’t
totally up to them on how they decide to name their band.
point is that im happy to have them along with their amazing
complicated lyrics back

nooo! | 1/18/2008, 1:31 pm EST

but i loved that little exclamation point! it was my friend.
:(
i will never get used to this.
ever.

Crapitooyah | 1/18/2008, 8:36 pm EST

So why exactly did they get rid of it???
It may have been painfully annoying to type in Panic! at the Disco but that’s one of the reasons I loved them so much – they’re different.
Now the exclamation point will go on unappreciated and undertyped.

nooo!!!!!! | 1/18/2008, 9:31 pm EST

waht?!?!?!its gone?!?!
how am i supposed to surivive…that little exclamation point was the reason for breathing! its what made them …them…
now im going to go organize a funeral for the exclamation point

my name is my name | 1/18/2008, 9:37 pm EST

in reality, you’re the dumba**. ‘Funnily’ is a word.

Reg arding PATD: no big deal, it’s not the end of the world. They are still the same people playing the same music. Look at it in the sense that they’re evolving or something. Don’t cry a river over it.

Brittany | 1/27/2008, 11:50 am EST

I held a burial in my backyard for the exclamation point.
I go by BRITTANY! AT THE DISCO on myspace.
and they have totally ruined my life.
I cried for like two days over it. It’s terrible.

ads | 1/27/2008, 2:41 pm EST

No exclamation point? I think Im gonna cry. xDDD Nah, really though. I liked the exclamation point! Dang it. It’s gone.

Raven!!!!!! at the Disco | 2/3/2008, 5:54 pm EST

I’m gonna cry. No, really. I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY WOULD DO THIS TO ME! WHY WHY WHY WHY THE HELL DID THEY HAVE TO TAKE IT AWAY! YOU CAN’T JUST CHANGE THE BAND NAME LIKE THAT! Panic! at the Disco is my favorite band. But not anymore, now “Panic at the Disco” is. I’m going to write it from now on with TWENTY exclamation points because I liked that part of them the most. Next to their music. They must hate me. =( NO FAIR! PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at the DISCO is the best band ever their name’s not gonna change anything!

Uh. | 2/5/2008, 2:18 am EST

If you people really “live for” Panic’s old exclamation mark… You really do lead sad little lives.

! | 2/5/2008, 6:39 pm EST

aw.
i’ll miss it.
it gave them character.
without it, it’s not quite the same.

hedzy | 2/8/2008, 4:09 am EST

oh my God, you people are so sad.. so many horrible things are happening in the world (famnine, wars, tsunamis,..) and all you people care about is a stupid exclamation point, and a talentless band?? People are beyond stupid. Wake up. The band sucks either way.

Jaz & ali | 2/9/2008, 3:22 pm EST

Best band ever…. better than mcr. lol…. y did they get rid of it… it’s not the same, no character to it… :(

kasi | 2/28/2008, 6:53 pm EST

I think they should have left the exclamation point because everybody here in vegas just calls them Panic! not Panic at the disco.

Hailey Hunn. | 3/6/2008, 10:24 pm EST

ok so i admit that “!” gave the bands name more character and i am kinda sad they dropped it, but oh well. yeah we shouldn’t be worry about stupid punctuation, we should be ECSTATIC that they have a new album out…FINALLY!

Panic, a musical disaster. | 3/9/2008, 12:10 am EST

margo | 3/24/2008, 4:54 am EST

Theyare pretty good for a bunch of teens. I am a HUGE BEATLE! fan and I still think they are good. Don’t like the new Beatlesque references though…no-one should presume to compare. Oh, by the way, is the gal who calls herself Lizabeth spelling her name right? Just wondering because that is my mom’s and my daughter’s name for real; don’t see that spelling too often.

Cami | 3/27/2008, 6:57 pm EST

Do they know how long it took me to write all those “!”s into my iTunes? And now I have to take them all out? Actually, whatevs. I was planning to delete half their stuff anyway.

Kelly! Rose | 5/17/2008, 8:17 pm EST

Panic at the disco is the most amazing orgasmic band to ever grace our presence… they are soo different and set apart from any other band i have ever heard of. i have the most unhealthy obsession with them (a lot of it is brendon, hehe) but seriously i realyl miss their old style of music with the “emo” look (though i believe them to not be emo. their lyrics are just really deep, and you need to realyl think to understand them. a shallow person would call them emo, but they really arnt. i have never heard such a flawless voice (brendon) in my entire life. they are seriously the most amazing band EVER. end of story. as for the exclamation point, that realyl made them stand out, but i can see why they dropped it, its because they have matured and changed their music at the “!” would not have matched their new muisic. listen to it and u will see what i’m saying. i reallllyyy wish they would go back to the funky awesome beats and back to their old style. i cannot stress how much i wish they would return to Panic! At The Disco. buttt their is no use in going on about it… i saw them live exactly 2 weeks ago, i was 1 person away from the stage. i seriously cryed when they came out and i pushed mi way through to see Brendon…. he is amazing and just plan ORGASMIC!!!! like seiously. anyway…. i will ALWAYS go by them as Panic! or Panic! At The Disco. no matter what, because that is the name by wich i learned the,/ i got SO MANY PEOPLE to love them. cuz i was like the first person to start listenin to them around where i live. lol but anyway… ~Panic! 4 ever.~

Wtf? was my first thought when i heard this. The “!” was awesome. it made the name special. idk. i jus think its retarded to get rid of it.

This may be the thing that brings the universe to an end. I am sure that my life will be forever changed and I will never recover from this travesty. It will effect future generations and will be studied by teams of philosophers and scientists. Religions will be based around the worship of this band a mourn every day the loss of the holy “!”.

PATD IZ STILL DA BEST BAND EVER IDK WHAT N E 1 SAYS FUCK ALL PATD HATERS{!!!!!}

kallias.lycan | 12/25/2008, 12:23 pm EST

This news is weird. Why change it at all? I really don’t understand bands nowdays. It really is kind of stupid. But whatever. If it makes them happy.

They aren’t unique in their sound, but their music is really good. Their old stuff and their new stuff. :]

Jherek | 1/6/2009, 11:00 am EST

“YOU ARE ALL WANNA BES TO SAY YOU LOVE A BAND BUT HATE HALF OF THEIR MUSIC.
I REPEAT.
WANNA. BES.”

So not going “OMFG ITS PANIC AT THE DISCO; IT’S TEH GREATEST” automatically makes you a wannabe? Having actual taste and not just claiming to love all their music for the sake of keeping up “appearances” makes you a wannabe? Then wtf does that make you? :| Just another typical fangirl.

You guys are dumb | 1/17/2009, 12:14 am EST

Okay, i dont often comment these blog things but this one has just pissed me off too much.

Panic have not dropped the ! you tards, if you look at the new logo you will see that it has been hidden in the ‘i’ of panic.

You people believe to much what the media says.

Albino BatMan | 1/17/2009, 9:30 am EST

Oh My God! You ‘tard’.

The new logo is in capital letters…

There is no ‘!’ in it.

Groww up you idiot.

NO | 5/26/2009, 6:50 pm EST

They will always be Panic! to me.

BohoGirl | 7/8/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Hey Kelly Rose I TOTALLY agree with what you have to say!
What is with you people? It’s just a mark at the end of a word… Jeez. The band is fantastic with or without it man!
I don’t know why they went all Beatle-y and wholesome. I loved them BECAUSE of their sexual and sinister lyrics and sound! The cellos and synths were awesome!!
I was a bit dissapointed at pretty odd.. But maybe the songs theyre working on now will be better :)
And now i just heard theyre splitting. I could cry.
Just: Brendon has an orgasmic voice. Never quit your job dude.
