On the Charts: Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” Takes Number One Three Months After Debuting Via the Web

1/9/08, 12:09 pm EST

The Big News: Despite giving away their album practically for free in October, Radiohead still managed to muster enough sales to claim the top spot on the Billboard chart, as the finally on-CD-and-in-stores In Rainbows sold 122,323 copies to hit Number One. Alicia KeysAs I Am stayed strong at two, selling only 10,000 copies less than Radiohead. Last week’s top-seller, Mary J. Blige’s Growing Pains, fell to third place with 89,084. While the Radiohead numbers seem weak—their Hail to the Thief sold 300,000 copies when it debuted in 2004—the total doesn’t factor in the number of limited-edition discboxes or “pay-what-you-want” download purchases.

Debuts: You’d think In Rainbows would be the big debut, but because 8,500 street date-breaking copies were sold the week before, the album actually debuted (illegally) at 156 last week. The Juno soundtrack, backboned by the Moldy Peaches’ Kimya Dawson, was the top-ranked debut, coming in at number eight with 37,936 copies sold.

Last Week’s Heroes: After ruling the chart landscape at the end of 2007, Josh Groban’s Noel submarined, falling to the fifty-eighth spot this week. The rest of last week’s top ten remained the same, with only the Hannah Montana 2 soundtrack dropping out to make room for Juno. Save for the debuts, all the albums in the top thirty suffered a decrease in sales as the annual post-holiday malaise gets underway.

Got In Rainbows yesterday. I know it’s been getting mixed reviews around here, but I think it’s quite good. A lot melody and the drums are right out in front in the mix, gives it a real punchy effect. Good one, guys! Oh, yeah, Amnesiac still sucks!

Hot Water Music, how is it getting mixed reviews around here? The fans of Rolling Stone magazine named it the best Album of the year, as well as being named the best album of the year by Billboard’s critic’s poll by a landslide. Plus the album was universally favored by Metacritic. SO I don’t know how you can make that justification.

PEOPLE have given it mixed reviews.

One of them said (interetingly enough) that it was “Pablo Honey without “Creep”. Sound familiar?

O “I don’t know how you can make that justification.”

Justificati on . . . heavy words, man! I don’t know if I can handle the pressure!!!

Am i the only one that thinks Radiohead’s latest sounds like shite? I’ve listened to everyhting since i was 16 (i’m in my 50’s now), and i find this ambient droning almost as depressing as their Hail to the Thief. Really liked OK Computer though. Maybe it’s because i don’t get high anymore?

hot water music, err, really pointless and bad third post. and “pablo honey without creep” is maybe the worst description I’ve heard for in rainbows. and no, it doesn’t sound to familiar to me.

Maybe you should just stick to your rascist replies instead, eh?

If you learned how to read, you would know that I DO LIKE the record. But with all the noisy voices in your head you’re not able to focus on any one thing for more than 8 seconds at a time!

In Rainbows is quite excellent!

With regards to some of the visitors on this thread: people who don’t have any real opinions about anything should do the world a favor and fall on a kitchen knife!

MikeyMike | 1/11/2008, 12:18 am EST

I take that back about Radiohead, their album is completely amazing after hearing it for about the fifth time.

Hey guys, It just the matter of taste…
There is always one like and don’t…

Open your mind and listen to their songs carefully…

To me, RH – they’re gods…
No one on this earth can do such those records…It’s completely difference to the others…

I love all of their albums (surely, there’re songs i don’t like)

Just like they said “Everything… in its right place” and they’re always in the right time..

Cheers!!
:O)

LOL! In light of what’s transpired in the past three decades – more on this below – I think trashing folks like Josh Groban is hilarious – in the sense that those who do it have no clue and are narrowmindedly one dimensional music genre fans who never LISTEN to any music beyond their own little world under a rock. Now, here’s a serious VOCALIST who sells millions upon millions of albums everytime he issues a new record. I’m not a Josh fan, but, I’ll give him credit. Back in the 70’s when I was a teen, the CARPENTERS were huge faves of mine, along with Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, etc. and in some circles, the CARPENTERS were considered “uncool” – yet, they’ve sold over 100 million records. Three decades later, the late great Karen Carpenter is heralded as one of the finest musicians and vocalists in Pop-Rock music, something millions of us recognised as kids. Let’s not forget that she also enchanted audiences as the very FIRST female drummer who could magically sing and simultaneously drum her way up the charts and not miss a beat on either front. I love that scene in the TOMMY BOY film where Karen’s “Superstar” comes on, exposing the hardcore rock fan base as huge closet fans. Will Josh’s records be featured in a remake of “Tommy Boy” in the 2020’s? LOL

I totally agree with Mike from Huston. OPEN YOUR MINDS PEOPLE! That’s where real creativity comes from!
