“U2 3D” Premieres at New York Screening; Everybody Besides Jay-Z Impressed

1/7/08, 6:03 pm EST

Minutes before a midtown-Manhattan press screening of U2 3D — a digitally shot three-dimensional film of a March 2006 U2 concert in Buenos Aires — this afternoon, a couple of journalists were shooed out of their seats in a center row to clear room for Jay-Z and his posse. Hova clearly has time on his hands for 2:00 Monday movie screenings now that he’s stepping down as president of Def Jam. Jay seemed into it at first, but by “Sunday Bloody Sunday” he took the 3D glasses off and was rubbing his temples as if his brain was going through image overload. By the time The Edge was strapping his guitar on for “Bullet the Blue Sky,” he and his crew were long gone.

They missed out. I haven’t seen a 3D movie since Captain EO at Disneyworld sometime around 1990, but the technology has really come a long way. The filmmakers claim this movie is the “first live-action film to be shot, posted and exhibited entirely in 3-D.” The band jumps off the screen during the entire performance — as does the frenzied crowd in the sold-out soccer stadium. When Adam Clayton takes the spotlight during “New Year’s Day” it looks like he’s playing in your lap. The sound was also as clear and crisp as I’ve ever heard in a movie theater.
The show is just ninety minutes long, which means they had to cut out a bunch of songs from the set. Unfortunately, the filmmakers seem to have some sort of beef with Achtung Baby. Gone are “Zoo Station,” “Until the End of the World” and “Love Is Blindness” — along with “The First Time” and many How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb tracks. What remains is a greatest-hits parade mixed in with three Atomic Bomb tracks. Casual fans might disagree, but I would have preferred to see the first performance of “Love Is Blindness” in thirteen years rather than an incredibly uninspired “With or Without You.” Petty editing quibbles aside, the film was really remarkable and makes every other concert I’ve ever seen in a movie theater seem flat and lifeless.

Just back from seeing it in NON IMAX cinima in Barcelona, YES its a WOW factor type movie. ok so we U2 fans would have liked to have seen some of the other lesser known songs, but still what an amazing film. It looks real, very real. And the sound is blinding as well. Bono was really on form vocally as well i thought.
I would see it again. High point has to be the fly though, damn thats the real Zoo TV for sure..
Peace to all U2 fans around the world..

Siri | 8/23/2008, 6:06 am EST

I heard a lot about U23D and I as a really big U2 fan I really want to watch it. Any idea about when it comes to India?

ahall | 3/10/2008, 9:15 am EST

typo correction - incredible.

ahall | 3/10/2008, 9:13 am EST

I saw this last night at IMAX in Austin, TX - and I’m still giddy from the experience. WOW. Blows away every concert experience I’ve ever had. All the images were crystal clear, right in your lap, and Bono’s eye contact, seemingly only w/ me, was breathtaking. I think I even shed a tear during an extrememly powerful rendition of “One Love.” Even if you’re not a U2 fan, I highly recommend this experience - increbile.

Nmar | 2/24/2008, 4:32 pm EST

Saw this film last night in the Rave, (I posted two days ago if anyone gives a shpit.) This is a great concert film. Great setlist, the images of the crowd were breathtaking, and of course Bono. Wow!!!! I had a 3D dork moment during one point when Bono reaches out to the camera, I thought he had his hand stretched to me and after looking around, (to make sure no one saw me) I reached out to high five him. Yeah I know, I’m an idiot. Great concert film.

I posted yesterday in hope of someone else giving me an update to see if it may have been the faulty projection at the theatre I was at. I went to the REAL D web site and the theatre I went to yesterday is not listed as being certified to show the movie. Tonight is the last night and I can go to another theatre on the list.

What I would like to know is if anyone else had a difficult time watching this, and if the video is clear on the whole screen, or did they experience fuzziness and over the top greens…The experience I had and the others that I spoke to in this theatre was painful. Can someone that saw it this weekend remark on the quality?

Thanks

Thanks

Kip | 2/23/2008, 2:11 pm EST

I just finished seeing this in Florida at Cinema World… I dont know, but maybe it was the theatre, but the 3-d was more green , audience faces could not be distinguished, and it was quite difficult to watch. I love the band and the music were great. Do you think it was the theatre? I will gladly go to another if the experience is better there…Has anyone else had this same issue?

Marty P | 2/23/2008, 11:57 am EST

I saw this movie on the Jersey shore last night. 3D has come a long way. An awesome movie with an awesome message.

Cozmo | 2/23/2008, 5:54 am EST

Just to let Guru know they are showing it in Wichita Kansas at the Warren Theaters.

DallasKen | 2/16/2008, 3:13 am EST

Even though it’s shot in ridiculously, obscenely stark 3D, you don’t have to open your eyes to enjoy this show. It merely completes the experience. Seriously, did anyone not get goosebumps during Vertigo OOOOOOH ooh ooh ooh ooh?!?!?!

Nmar | 2/15/2008, 7:34 am EST

Am seeing this movie tomorrow at Rave in Columbus. Cannot wait!!!!! I love U2, am looking forward to next year when they tour. But for now, this will do.

fersomm | 2/14/2008, 6:26 am EST

what?? are you sure?? there won´t be a DVD.. Matt, is that your guess or is official?? from where did you took that info..
I could be really disappointed..

Gally | 2/13/2008, 9:38 am EST

Greetings to all U2 fans frm the Philippines! I am one of the many U2 fans eagerly waiting for their U23D Manila playdate. I have to travel 3hrs to watch since we don’t have an Imax theater here in my hometwon, but i don’t mind since it’s a chance to see my friends too who’re also U2 fans. It feels gr8 to have a band that’s been around when i was young (I started on the JOshua Tree) is still very much HOT!! Long live U2!! Godbless!

Matt | 2/8/2008, 7:38 pm EST

I hate to tell you all, but there isn’t gonna be a DVD release because there is no 3d technology for home reproduction. A standard TV can’t project these images because they require polarization to be seen like they are in the theatre. Unless you want to watch it with red and blue “3d” which is garbage quality.

hater | 2/5/2008, 12:32 pm EST

haha i do not like U2 but i like the used!!

U2 Fan | 1/28/2008, 4:28 pm EST

Juan | 1/26/2008, 4:07 pm EST

Im from Buenos Aires, and I was on that concert in March 2006. All bands like playing here in Argentina for the people who is one of the best hot audience in the world…ask the Rolling Stones how we are in Buenos Aires. it’s a great honour that U2 had chosen Buenos Aires for their first 3D movie

lme | 1/24/2008, 11:12 pm EST

Hey Guru - keep checking U23D’s website for theater locations. A week ago, the closest theater to Atlanta listed was in Tennesee. Now they’re listing a BUNCH more theaters, and I get the sense they might keep adding more. I know there are Real D theaters here in the Atlanta area that aren’t on the list yet, though Real D’s site says they’ll be showing U23D in their theaters. So we shall see! I’m looking forward to finally seeing it!

In the meantime, if you dig seeing cool bands in 3D, one of our local Atlanta bands just did a music video in 3D and it rocks! I got to check it out here locally, but they’ve got it online for download and will even send you the glasses you need to view it! http://www.goldentheband.com/3 d/

Tone Loc | 1/16/2008, 3:20 pm EST

Saw it at the press screening in DC. Pretty good. Kind of boring though.

Martin | 1/16/2008, 9:03 am EST

I think that Jay-Z was mentioned in the article becouse the “journalists were shooed out of their seats” where from Rolling Stone or friends of them.

Anyway i live in Uruguay so i dont have any IMAX near, so i will have to wait to the next U2 concert in Argentina.

Setlist | 1/15/2008, 11:22 am EST

Miami I agree, “City Of Blinding Lights” will be missed!!

Not to mention “Mysterious Ways”!

Guru | 1/15/2008, 5:57 am EST

Considering there doesn’t seem to be a Kansas City showing and not one theater withing 200 miles of my home, I guess I will have to hope they release a DVD of this quickly.

I don’t get it. KC has the digital technology in three different theaters. Why is it not being released here?

Miami | 1/14/2008, 3:47 pm EST

The only song missing:

CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS

That opening riff and the visual displays are one in a million and and a constant throughout the Vertigo Tour.

Looking forward to jump up and down in the local IMAX theater.

marcecheap | 1/12/2008, 5:39 am EST

obviously Argentina is one of the hottests crowds in the world!!
some bands seems to discovered it..i can´t wait to see Bono and the band doing this gig..

william cate | 1/11/2008, 10:32 pm EST

Jay. Z didnt like seeing people that can acually play there instruments since no rAPERS ARE MUSICIANS IT MAKES THEM SCRATCH THERE HEAD WHEN THEY SEE ONE.

filbo | 1/11/2008, 6:40 pm EST

Jay-Z took his ATTORNEY to the cinema? What, got no friends?

JAYZ BLOWS ANYWAY | 1/11/2008, 3:11 pm EST

JAYZ BLOWS ANYWAY
I GUESS HE LEFT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO GRAPE SODA

“I find it neccessary to correct your sloopy and inaccurate staements.”

Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On
Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On

. . . and Mr. Guido, your client is one ugly motherfucker!!!

Michael Guido | 1/9/2008, 4:10 pm EST

As Jay Z’s attorney, I was with him at this screening as one of his “posse” of 4,which also included his manager. One of the producers invited us just before the screening and was told that, due to another appoitment, Jay could only stay for a song or two. He stayed for quite a few songs more than “one or two” and said , as he was leaving, “This is incredible”. As Jay is a good friend of Bono, and a fan of U2, I find it neccessary to correct your sloopy and inaccurate staements. So that the record is clear, contrary to your headline, and your ill informed comments, I can assure you that Jay was extemely impressed - with Catherine Owens’ direction, with the amazing technology and, as always, with the band’s continued cutting edge approach to giving their fans new and exciting ways to interact with them. Excellent journalistic work Andy.

John Daly | 1/9/2008, 12:41 am EST

U2 3D is another opportunity for their fans to see the greatest band in the world.
Thank you Larry, Bono, Edge & Adam for all that you do and the enjoyment that you provide.

Brenda | 1/8/2008, 10:37 pm EST

Zoo Station was probably cut because there’s a shoutout from Bono to Edge’s kids, one of whom was sick. The tour was suspended right after that.

dpc915 | 1/8/2008, 7:16 pm EST

Why couldn’t they have left the more rare tracks in the film? Do we need yet another concert of U2’s greatest hits….I hate stuff like that….I guess they will rip us all off for the DVD “directors cut” version complete with Bono style fly 3D glasses

ThatU2Girl | 1/8/2008, 4:11 pm EST

I can’t wait for this movie - saw 5 shows on the Vertigo tour…if anyone has US dates for when/where it will actually be shown for the commoners, I’d like to know!

Keoniana | 1/8/2008, 3:21 pm EST

Jay Z left because he couldn’t top anything he has or will do in the future next to a group that has been together for what now….close to 30 years. U2 lives on!

Michelle | 1/8/2008, 1:29 pm EST

Am not intrested in anything jay whats his name! But its great to get some news on U2,them guys rock!

Joe | 1/8/2008, 12:55 pm EST

why even put anything about Jay Z in this article? who cares what he thinks of this movie. i’m sure most U2 fans would walk out on a jay z movie.

looking forward to checking it out..hopefully they didnt cut out too many new songs in place of the old classaics we heard 10,000 times like Bullet, Pride, ect, ect.

Rita | 1/8/2008, 11:44 am EST

Jay-Z should finance a 3D concert movie of his boo, Beyonce. Can you imagine her bootyliciousness in 3D on an IMAX. It’s like whoa.

Neil | 1/8/2008, 7:00 am EST

Zoo Station and Until The End of The World were the stand out performances of the Vertigo tour.

surjulz | 1/8/2008, 4:19 am EST

wasn’t the performance of Love is blindness only half complete…

no guitar solo or something from Edge. I’d guess that’s why they cut it out…

Seth | 1/8/2008, 1:06 am EST

If anyone’s seen Love is Blindness from the ZooTV in Sydney DVD, you know how amazing it sounds live.

thatguy | 1/7/2008, 11:58 pm EST

WTF? - you’re crazy.

There are two songs I would love to hear U2 perform live, “Love is Blindness” and “Acrobat”. Quite possibly the most stirring album-closing track sequence of all time. They would make for an outstanding 1-2 punch in a live setting.

Kevin | 1/7/2008, 11:36 pm EST

Jay-Z couldn’t handle the awesomeness.

WTF? | 1/7/2008, 11:29 pm EST

Who wants to hear “Love is Blindness” live? There’s a fine line between diehard U2 fan and pretentious snob. It’s a fantastic song, but not one I’d pay to see live. There’s a reason it’s been so long since they’ve performed it.

Vico | 1/7/2008, 9:32 pm EST

Im from Argentina, I went to that show on 2nd march and it was amazing!!!
one of my best nights ever, I will never forget!
I wanna see the movie…
gracias u2 por esa espectacular noche.

Jim Dorey | 1/7/2008, 7:54 pm EST
