Weekend Rock List: Best Soundtracks by One Artist

1/4/08, 5:03 pm EST

To celebrate this weekend’s wide release of Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood, with its music by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, this weekend’s Rock List will celebrate soundtracks by a single artist or band. Hit us back with your suggestions, and on Monday we’ll reveal Readers’ Best Soundtracks by One Artist. Note: when one artist comprises the majority of the album, i.e. Aimee Mann and Magnolia, that counts. Albums that accompany rock films like Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same, however, do not. Here are our first picks:

Prince – Purple Rain
Bob Dylan – Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Kimya Dawson/The Moldy Peaches – Juno
Neil Young – Dead Man
Wang Chung – To Live and Die In L.A.

Harold and Maude – Cat Stevens

Sherrybaby | 1/5/2008, 6:45 pm EST

If I have to see Eddie Vedder’s on the top of this list when all this is over, not only am I going to puke up my shoes, I’m going to puke up Metal Shawn’s as well.

The Who-Tommy

Who the hell are the people picking these lists, high school rejects from the Resource Room? Damn.

RS, make sure you count the “chads” correctly, we don’t need another 2000 election here. These votes are starting to stink!

Sherrybaby | 1/5/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Wait a minute, does “Tommy” fall into the “Song Remains The Same” category? If so, my apologies. The rules are a little elusive to me.

Metal Shawn G | 1/5/2008, 6:51 pm EST

Well, I know this one fits the category just fine. It’s a real shame that more people don’t know about this little film by Brian De Palma and it’s soundtrack!

Superfly and The Graduate!!! How could ypu forget those!?!?!? Also, how about A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, and Yellow Submarine. Also, would have been interesting to see what CSN would have done with Easy Rider.

Sherrybaby | 1/5/2008, 10:43 pm EST

You’re damned skippy, Jeff. I think we should just do a “do over”! People are definitely HIGH this weekend; I just wish Me and Metal could get our hands on some of that shit!

You know Metallica did a soundtrack to a documentary about two boys who supposedly were satanists and killed and raped a little girl.

Do you remember that? I guess that’s a vote, then. Even though Metallica’s not really my cup of tea.

Sherrybaby | 1/5/2008, 11:05 pm EST

Hey, no bullshit. Here’s a really rockin’ soundtrack:

Steel Dragon-Rockstar

Zakk Wilde, Jeff Pilson, and Jason Bonham (hello, hello) with a ghost singer recorded some absolutely SCREAMING tracks.

Hey RS, we really need to do this son of a bitch over. Maybe you should extend this one a couple of daze and see if some new people can add some fresh (and intelligent) choices.

Sincerely,

Dollface

Oh I see we’re smoking pot, now. I think using psychotropic substances is a real positive example to set for our daughter.

You’re one to talk, you bloodless money grubbing freak!

Lester, you have hostility in you.

Do you mind, I’m trying to work out here; unless you wanna spot me.

Umm… Hello? We need some Elfman and Mothersbaugh up in this hizzie. Or does rock musicians turned film composers count?

the best soundtracks by either one:

Danny Elfman’s best work:

Nightmare Before Christmas, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, best of all, Edward Scissorhands.

Mark Mothersbaugh best work:

Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Rushmore.

I see that Ry Cooder’s “Paris, Texas” soundtrack was mentioned by a few others, and rightly so. And it’s not the only one worth mentioning. His soundtracks for “Johnny Handsome” and “Southern Comfort” are also outstanding.

DaNunzio | 1/7/2008, 11:47 am EST

Definitely a big vote for the She’s The One soundtrack by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Lame movie, great soundtrack.

Obscured by Clouds was the soundtrack to a French film called “La Vallee” as I recall it was printed on the sticker on the shrink-wrap of the album.

Dusty Chalk | 1/7/2008, 8:27 pm EST

Labyrinth wasn’t by David Bowie, it only had him singing two or so songs — Trevor Jones did the soundtrack.

Janice | 1/8/2008, 9:35 pm EST

Sondre Lerche – Dan In Real Life is gorgeous both the songs and the score

Dietpillpyramidscheme | 2/9/2008, 7:28 pm EST

I’m gonna vote for Bodysong by Jonny Greenwood.

I think its much better than There Will Be Blood..

And by the way, I don’t beleive There Will Be Blood counts towards this competition, as most of the soundtrack was composed for something else, cut up and used in the soundtrack.

Much of the album is the Popcorn Superhet compisition done with the BBC in house orchestra..

Vote Bodysong!

Henry Bukowski | 7/26/2009, 1:19 am EST

Selmasongs, Bjork.
