Peter Travers’ Video Plea: Oscar, Don’t Be Stupid

1/4/08, 5:47 pm EST

Instead of reviewing new movies this week, Peter Travers lets us all in on a little secret: the Golden Globes are nothing but advertisements for the Academy Awards. As a service, Travers offers the latter’s nominating committee a little advice: “Oscar, don’t be stupid.” He urges the Oscars not to forget Jonny Greenwood and Eddie Vedder’s film scores, Judd Apatow’s comedies, Sidney Lumet and those few movies that made you think in 2007. Click above to watch his full impassioned plea.

Right on Pete. Exactly what I was thinking. It’s just too bad the Oscars are an advertisement for the studios and don’t actually reflect ANYTHING! if they did, Paul HAGgis would be out of work like he should be. But the least they could do is acknowledge the good stuff. I mean Jonny lost a nom to Clint Eastwood for best score??????? Where am I?

Jonny Greenwood’s score for There Will Be Blood IS amazing, and if the academy doesn’t nominate him, i will officially know that the Oscars are stupid…if he doesn’t win…that will be HORRIBLE!!!

Dave | 1/5/2008, 1:19 am EST

Rock on Pete!
Really discovered Pete’s personality on this podcast. Very refreshing. I would luv for J.Greenwood (new blood) and Lumet (proven blood) to get recognized this year.

Eddie Vedder’s getting nominated for everything. Why does Peter Travers possibly think he’s going to get ignored? His nomination for Guaranteed is a given.

Angel Dream | 1/5/2008, 1:13 pm EST

Someone out there is watching, and I like when people watch!!!

Woody | 1/5/2008, 2:36 pm EST

That Travers actually takes the Oscars seriously shows what a moron he is….Jonny Greenwood’s score for Blood is nothing more than warmed-over Penderecki, with a little Lutoslawski and Ligeti thrown in.

I’ll stick with the original masterworks, thanks, not this clownish Radiohead idiot’s version.

I thought you liked the Johnny Greenwood stuff, ummm . . . Woody. You change your positions more than the Presidential candidates do!

I’ll give your credit, though, the pasta stuff is kinda cute.

Diane | 1/5/2008, 4:02 pm EST

Listen to the music in “The Shining” and you’ll hear from whom Greenwood stole all his musical “ideas”….but you Radiohead fans wouldn’t know that, because you’re too busy listening to their crappy stuff.

Noah Rozenberg | 1/5/2008, 5:57 pm EST

after finally finding a decent movie critc, i applaud pete. His views on each film are smart and educated. also he brings a “real factor” to his reviews. If pete says that jonny greenwood and sidney lumet (long deserved) should win an oscar, they probably should!

Armond | 1/5/2008, 6:30 pm EST

Anyone who thinks Travers is a decent reviewer (he’s definitely not a critic) must work for the studios and are happier than a pig in shit that they can always count on Travers’ quotes for their ads.

I think he’s paid by the quote.

Woody | 1/5/2008, 6:33 pm EST

To Sherrybaby:

Wha—?

Gene Shalit | 1/5/2008, 6:35 pm EST

Ditto.

Listen, some of us are little tired of being called “idiots” because we like a certain band or artist.

Some of us are quite intelligent and sick of the same bitter whiny complaining rap that we’re forced to listen to over and over and over again.

Get a new act kids, ’cause this one’s real old!

“To Sherrybaby:

Don’t play dumb with me, Woodrow!
You’re easier to pick out than a Republican in a cheap suit!!!

Gene Siskel | 1/5/2008, 6:40 pm EST

Sherry, you get a new act, because Radiohead’s the one that’s stale and old.

idiot.

Woody | 1/5/2008, 6:45 pm EST

You Radiohead/Maggie Gyllenhal fans are real tools!

Sherrybaby | 1/5/2008, 7:03 pm EST

Yeah okay, Woody. Go play with your woody!!! You’re just a bitter little troglodite aren’t you?

Chris | 1/5/2008, 7:12 pm EST

Thank You Peter Travers!

Every year you nail the Oscar for snubs, but this year your choices couldn’t be more dead on. No Country confusing? Please! Thinking is a good thing, like you said. All praise to Greenwood for his score and may I add a don’t forget nod to Paul Dano for his supporting turn in There Will Be Blood?

Full Metal Casket | 1/5/2008, 8:01 pm EST

What happened to Gene and Woody?

I guess they bought a fifth of whiskey and head for the nearest peep show.

Is that okay?

Sherrybaby | 1/5/2008, 8:03 pm EST

re: Gene Siskel | 1/5/2008, 6:40 pm EST

“idiot.”

That’s a very very little word from a very very little mind!

(Is that okay?)

Radical Redneck | 1/6/2008, 11:10 am EST

Once was the best movie of the year.

Woody | 1/6/2008, 9:19 pm EST

I’ll have to stop posting here…so many morons….”Once” best movie? that must have been the only movie you saw.
Travers a good critic? Whatta joke.

Bye-bye, idiots.

YouHaveTheRightToBeStupid | 1/7/2008, 1:40 pm EST

Normally I love Peter Travers, but his “Don’t be stupid” mantra is sounding a lot like the inane comments that flood these message boards. I’m surprised he didn’t use call the academy “retarded” or “douchebags.”

Anonymous | 1/7/2008, 7:13 pm EST

Peter Travers comes across a lot better in his written reviews than in videos like this. His entire argument was that the Academy was stupid. And while it is a fair argument, he only once backs up this notion with previous films they have ignored. I feel this could have been executed much better.

fugazi48 | 1/7/2008, 9:15 pm EST

I am really tired of everthing being a freakin video on the internet. Are these high school kids too stupid to read? This was interesting, but really a waste of bandwidth.

LucasFultz | 1/8/2008, 12:16 am EST

Yes, Oscar is stupid. And, yes…most of these comments are as well. Sorry, Peter, but not even your valid points will ever, EVER penetrate the skull of the Academy or most of the film-going public who prefer mindless entertainment as opposed to thought-provoking art. They’ve screwed up with A History of Violence, Eternal Sunshine…the list goes on and on.

Hunt | 1/9/2008, 3:10 am EST

Knocked-Up wasn’t even funny, not even a little.

Adios, asshole!

Murphy | 1/9/2008, 3:14 pm EST

Peter, Dont be stupid and do something as stupid as this. Please

Eli | 1/22/2008, 11:22 pm EST

Well he was right to be concerned. They were stupid. Guaranteed was not nominated. How stupid can they be? Very, very stupid.
