The Radiohead Survey: Who’s Buying “In Rainbows” In Stores Today?

1/2/08, 5:29 pm EST

Since Rock Daily has been following Radiohead’s unconventional release of In Rainbows so closely, we figured we better hit our local Virgin Megastore this afternoon to find out who was out buying the physical disc today — and why. Here’s a sampling of five typical folks we spied picking up the album. The biggest shocker? All five did not download the album before hitting the store today.

Ryan Campbell, 24
Radiohead fan since: OK Computer
Did you purchase the online version? No.
Reason for buying CD: “I heard the sound quality of the online release was bad, 128k or something. I’m not an audiophile, but it was important enough to buy the album.”
Have you heard the record already? “I’ve avoided listening to it.”

Jennifer Rose, 24
Radiohead fan since: “About four years ago.”
Did you purchase the online version? “What?”
Reason for buying CD: “I don’t normally buy CDs, but I heard it at the listening station. I was just feeling it, and I was in the mood to buy something today.”

Gene Romero, 26
Radiohead fan since: Pablo Honey
Did you purchase the online version? “No, I wasn’t into downloading it. I thought it was amazing, though. I avoided getting this record that way, but I did it for [Saul Williams’] Niggy Tardust.”
Reason for buying CD: “There’s something about Radiohead — I wanted to own it. Their artwork is always amazing. It’s plain and simple, but effective. It’s a whole experience.”
Have you heard the record already? “I saw the Webcast, and I said, ‘Holy shit.’ It’s their best in a long time.”

Leonard James, 23
Radiohead fan since: OK Computer
Did you purchase the online version? “No, but a lot of my friends did, so I heard it secondhand. They had a listening party. It just wasn’t worth my time — I don’t have an MP3 player, and my computer sound sucks.”
Do you think other bands could pull off the online model? “Could someone like 50 Cent do it and then still have people buy it in stores? I doubt it. But it could work well for others.”

Sharon Jamilkowski, 26
Radiohead fan since: “The mid-Nineties, the one with ‘High and Dry’ on it.”
Did you purchase the online version? No.
Have you heard the record already? “My friends passed around a lot of the live recordings. It’s tempting to name your own price, but I need to have a physical copy. There’s always interesting stuff in the liner notes.”
Are you interested in the disc box? “It’s way too expensive — maybe it will be a Christmas present next year.”

You’d think at least ONE of these “fans” would’ve bought it online. Geeez…

Dave, 40+ LB/CA | 1/2/2008, 6:41 pm EST

Radiohead fan since: Creep

Did you purchase the online version?
No. But got it from other unknown sources, with the internet, with no regrets; however, full intent on purchasing the real thing someday, which i did on 1/1/08!

Have you heard the record already?
Yep, the whole thing since day zero plus all the great b-sides

Are you interested in the disc box?
Only if it didn’t have vinyl. I’d prefer all the songs on a special CD version like Kid A or HTTT

Thanks RS for this entertaining blog

Eduardo | 1/2/2008, 6:41 pm EST

seriously. i downloaded the online version just to preview the album before getting it and am going to buy the hard copy for the sound quality and so that i have a hard copy. i don’t like downloading period because you’ll never get the sound quality you’d get with a CD.

and what i got from the website was 160kbs not 128

Lizzy Lizz | 1/2/2008, 9:00 pm EST

I was in Virgin Megastore on Saturday in NYC and the album was already for sale!

Schzzrf | 1/2/2008, 9:45 pm EST

I’m pretty picky about sound quality; the download was fine.
What a Xmas it’s been- discbox/Thumbs Down/Scotch Mist. This Santa character’s making considerable fuckin leaps to his past status in my books…

Andy | 1/2/2008, 10:08 pm EST

“The one with High and Dry on it…”????

These are fans??? Please.

Jakobi | 1/2/2008, 11:03 pm EST

I downloaded it at the first opportunity, and paid AU$20. In other words I didn’t know it was just Radiohead’s way of leaking the album.

So, yes, I bought it today, very impressed with the packaging; but I feel a bit cheated.

Then again, I give them props for cheating me in such a creative way. It was all in fun.

jacob | 1/2/2008, 11:52 pm EST

Downloaded it for about $8. Wish I would have paid more. So I bought the physical album today and had fun putting it together. Their Best album since kid A I’ll say.

The number of “In Rainbows” purchasers who previously downloaded the album from the pay-what-you-like site could be substantial. But you won’t find many by staking out traditional bricks-and-mortar stores; instead, you’ll need to look at places where the tech-savvy shop: Amazon, iTunes, etc.

liveon35mm | 1/3/2008, 5:59 am EST

I bought it in Rome on the 24th of December, didn’t know it was out before in Italy.
I already downloaded it for 50p, but the real stuff it was I will always go for.

andy, fuck a horse.

R.Tickle | 1/3/2008, 11:49 am EST

who’s RadioHead?

reply to R.Tickle | 1/3/2008, 11:54 am EST

Seriously?

me | 1/3/2008, 11:55 am EST

I was in this little indie record shop last Friday and it was on sale!

UAW/MF | 1/3/2008, 1:01 pm EST

I know I’m all alone on this one, but I still think “Hail To The Thief” is their best work!

AKP | 1/3/2008, 1:22 pm EST

Downloaded the album and paid $12 for it. The songs have since been etched into my subconscious. I bought the CD yesterday and immediately noticed subtle nuances in the quality of the audio that the digital download had been lacking. The CD comes off sounding much more fresh and alive than the download. I paid the full price twice but then again I’ve also been buying tons of re-masters from various artists. I’m the kind of sucker that record labels love.

C.S. | 1/3/2008, 1:25 pm EST

“Fuck a horse.” I don’t hear that one often. For some reason it got a chuckle out of me.

C.S. | 1/3/2008, 1:28 pm EST

I’m thinking this is the best one since Kid A. I got the online version but I’m still getting the cd, but I’m kinda broke right now. I’m thinkin I’ll buy it at the end of this month along with TMV’s “Bedlam in Goliath”.

Saxon | 1/3/2008, 2:11 pm EST

I’m glad someone they interviewed mentioned that they didn’t buy it because it was lame ass 128kb mp3s.

What was Radiohead thinking releasing their album in the 50 Cent / Avril Lavigne format? Isn’t their target the kind of person who would know the difference between shit mp3s and flacs?

Pearl Jam releases their little $12 ‘bootlegs’ in flac for fuck’s sake and Radiohead can’t do it for an MAJOR ALBUM RELEASE?

damn | 1/3/2008, 3:03 pm EST

enough about the sound quality!!! they just released it on CD, stop whining ur ass off.

re: damn | 1/3/2008, 3:36 pm EST

whining about sound quality???

gee, I wonder if you were one of the people going on and on about the lack of sound quality of digital on Joe Levy’s thread?!

ñandu | 1/3/2008, 4:49 pm EST

That’s funny those people didn’t jump at the chance to download it. I wouldn’t have if it was a significant difference in sound…but it’s NOT. Not enough to keep me from hearing my favorite band’s new album.

I paid for the download, and plan on buying the physical disc as soon as I confirm whether or not the package “on its way” from my mom isn’t the box set. If it is, I’m good, if not, I’ll buy it that day. Go Radiohead! In Rainbows is the best since Kid A.

The Seeker | 1/4/2008, 10:50 pm EST

I got it at Best Buy for $8…it was going for $16 at Starbucks…

Sherrybaby | 1/5/2008, 12:45 pm EST

Kinda accidently wound up buying “In Rainbows” on Amazon because we went on there to purchase the “The There Will Be Blood” soundtrack because we knew a PT Anderson inspired soundtrack by Johnny Greenwood has to be a can’t miss!

In Rainbows $7.98 on Amazon, kids. Two great CDs coming in the mail! Hella Cool, Hella Cool!

UAW/MF: “I know I’m all alone on this one, but I still think “Hail To The Thief” is their best work!”

no no, you’re not. i completely agree. that’s the album that matters, definitely on par with OK Computer both musically and conceptually, when you feel that, yes, this band has got something to say. In Rainbows, on the other hand is a non-cerebral ear candy, which is also kind of nice in its own way, but i can’t help but feel that something’s missing.

UAW/MF | 1/5/2008, 10:26 pm EST

I agree that “OK” and “Hail” are the best. I just don’t feel Kid A the way everybody else does (kinda lacking melody, i think). And “Amnesiac” is a piece of shit!

Hope In Rainbows gives the vibe that I love about this band.

Hey, everything that Genesis with Peter was good. But when they were good they were better than anyone else. That’s how I feel about Radiohead. Well the fucker is on it’s way. We’ll see.

UAW/MF | 1/5/2008, 10:34 pm EST

Not Everything with Peter Gabriel was gppd, but when they were good, they were better than anyone else.

(A lot of similarities between the two bands. Worth a listen. Supper’s Ready is probably not the place to start. Check out stuff (if you want on You Tube) Like Watcher of the Sky, and Fifth Of Firth. And just go buy a copy of “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”
Shorter songs. I GUARANTEE it will blow you away. If you like Hail and OK Computer, you’ll fuckin’ love this thing. You won’t waste your money, I promise!

Goodnight, tough guy/girl. Hats off! You sure can take a punch!

UAW/MF: “I just don’t feel Kid A the way everybody else does (kinda lacking melody, i think). And “Amnesiac” is a piece of shit!”

oooooh, here I can’t agree with you, sorry :)
Kid A and Amnesiac are magical things of ethereal beauty, once you start feeling them. Hail to the Thief, to me, is the culmination of all the experimentation the band had done starting with Ok Computer and through Kid A/Amnesiac. in my humble opinion it’s their best so far. but I would never call a single one of Radiohead albums “a piece of shit” (not even Pablo Honey, which is clearly subpar by Radiohead standards, but is still a solid début), never mind Amnesiac, full of gems like Pyramid Song, You And Whose Army, Knives Out, Like Spinning Plates (one of my absolute favourite Radiohead tracks), Life In A Glasshouse, Dollars and Cents. nah, dude, Amnesiac is dope of the finest variety.

Tripoli | 1/6/2008, 3:16 am EST

…and I Might Be Wrong, of course! how could I forget that one? amazing track.

UAW/MF | 1/6/2008, 5:20 pm EST

Okay, I’ll spin ‘em again. Check The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. You’ll be pleasantly surprized!

WAM/FU | 1/7/2008, 3:53 am EST

dear UWA/MF,

you must have confused Kid A with a Kid Rock album and Amnesiac with Bruce Willis’ The Return of Bruno.

Learn to listen differently. go back to your american apparel job and sit in the corner on a pile of sweater vests,v-necks, and child-pornish advertisments, and listen to those two albums until it clicks you have to quit your job.
