New Led Zeppelin Tour Rumors Star Dave Grohl, R.E.M. Confirm LP Title, Jessica Simpson Explains Turn to Nashville and More

1/2/08, 9:27 am EST

  • It’s a new year, with new Led Zeppelin tour rumors: The latest speculation has Foo Fighter Dave Grohl waiting on an invite to drum on an alleged reunion tour. Grohl, who has expressed his willingness to do the job, was allegedly up for Jason Bonham’s gig at last month’s one-off show. Bonnaroo buzz has also returned, despite Robert Plant’s scheduled tour with Alison Krauss, after an “insider” told The Mirror “[Fans] have been bombarding [Led Zeppelin's] Web site to get back together for good but only Robert Plant wasn’t keen to commit. Now he’s had a change of heart and if it goes well they are also talking about touring.”
  • R.E.M.’s fourteenth studio album will be called Accelerate and, as Michael Stipe revealed last month, will hit stores on April 1st. Stipe recently told Uncut, “We spent less time making this record than we have in twenty years. … I feel like there’s a confidence in the material, and a communication between the three of us that hasn’t been there for some time.”
  • Jessica Simpson has confirmed she’s in Nashville working on her country debut, telling Billboard, “I am a country girl. I grew up in Texas, and country music was what I listened to.” The album is scheduled for a 2008 release on Columbia Nashville.
  • Five of James Brown’s children have challenged the late singer’s will, claiming it should be invalidated because “former advisers used undue influence to get him to create charitable trusts that the advisers would profit from.” The bulk of Brown’s financial legacy has been allotted for trusts to educate his grandchildren and other needy kids, and one of Brown’s advisers calls this latest attack “an act of desperation.”
  • Teenybopper crime spree! A five-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl used a gift card to break into a New Jersey home on Christmas Eve and steal $200 worth of presents, including Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers CDs. Hannah Montana hysteria was also to blame for a six-year-old Texas girl lying about her father dying in Iraq. The girl and her mother wrote an essay about the fake experience to secure tickets to the sold-out show, but forfeited their win after the truth came out. The girl’s mom explained, “We did whatever we could to win.”

No way in hell Dave Grohl gets that gig. It’s Bonham’s job, has been since birth. He (and his press people) ought to back off.

That Foo Fighter can go to hell. If Jason doesn’t play, then it’s 3/4 Zep. John’s blood runs in him, and it’s his job, nobody else’s. Besides, he has rehearsed with the other 3 for months just for that one show, can this Grohl guy say the same? Hell no. It’s Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham, not Grohl!

Dave Grohl is a true rock and roll icon, “Jason” was lucky to have been in the right place at the right time, privileged to have been splooged outa daddies family jewels.

Precisely, Dave better get off the sauce Jason has been clean and sober for a while and it’s his job period. I don’t know if Grohl even said that so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt at any rate Page, Plant and Jones aren’t going to all of a sudden call Dave G if they do decide to tour, unless Jason declines. Dave better be ready to work with the Foo Fighters because Zeppelin doesn’t have an opening for an outsider besides there are probably ten other guys more qualified than him anyway.

In response to the comment below…Please know what you are talking about before ever leaving such a rude and hateful public comment. Jason Bonham is not only an exemplary and beyond talented drummer…I happen to know him personally and he is a decent, and long time sober father of 2. He has taken his Father’s legacy and built on it in such a positive way. Robert, Jimmy and John Paul Jones are like uncles to him. He earned and deserved his position backing those musicians and he has done his father and the fans proud.

I was at the O2 gig, front row and I can honestly say, as soon as the drums hammered down for the beginning of “Good times, Bad times”… Need I say more? Jason Bonham played with power and passion. He is the only one who could even attempt to fill his Father’s shoes. Dave Grohl is a good drummer, but that’s all. Foo fighters as a support would be the best he can hope for. Please Led… TOUR!!! I need more of what I got at the O2!!!

Bonogamy | 1/2/2008, 10:37 pm EST

Led Zeppelin is still one of the top two or three most vital influences in rock music. They’re one of those bands like Rush and Black Sabbath that still get played in most teenagers’ bedrooms despite all the bitter ranting from loser idiots on RS message boards that they’re yesterday’s news.

One poster was right to say that this has been Jason’s job since birth. The continuity of Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham should be maintained for the name “Led Zeppelin” to actually mean something on the marquee. This is not 1979 and Jason is not John when it comes to self-destruction.

I suspect that Grohl will tour with the Foo Fighters as an opening act and as a replacement for Jason in case of the unforeseen. Any true Zep fan should want Jason: it’s not like he can’t do the job and without him the name “Led Zeppelin” will be as hollow as the name “Van Halen” without Michael Anthony.

UAW/MF | 1/3/2008, 8:00 am EST

If there’s any truth to this, Dave Grohl shouldn’t be a part of this! I don’t know how Page, Plant and Jones can kick Bonzo’s son to the curb. Frankly, if Grohl takes over, the sound will suffer, and people will finally see that Mr. Grohl’s ability as a drummer has been grossly overrated!

And I think Dave has no class for lobbying for the job when he knows damned well that Jason is more than up for the challenge and that it should be his birthright!

And ah, Mr. or Ms. Glug Glug, why don’t you drink yourself silly and then play a few rounds of russian roulette! If you knew anything about drumming, you would know that Jason is an exemplary player, not just someone “who was in the right place at the right time!

Jason’s done a great job, no question. HOWEVER. . .I do feel like there was a liiiittle bit of OMPH missing from his drumming. He just didn’t pound as hard as I wanted him to and as hard as his dad did. Grohl’s got the power to push Zep over the edge into absolute unquestionable perfection in the now.

“Birthright”. . .pfft. Nice idea, but kinda unrealistic.

UAW/MF | 1/3/2008, 11:00 am EST

re: m | 1/3/2008, 10:40 am EST

There’s a little bit more to it than just playing loud. Can Grohl play those demanding bass drum parts that John could play?

Well, I know Jason can play them, because I’ve heard him do it!

I find it interesting that you would want Grohl to be the drummer for Zeppelin when you hate him so much. That’s why your whole rap is so sad. You don’t really stand for anything. You just want attention.

m | 1/3/2008, 11:23 am EST

I realize there’s more to it than playing loud. . .that’s why I said that the only thing lacking in Jason’s performance for me was the omph. I think Grohl could manage the complexity of the parts and hit harder. If you don’t agree fine.

“I find it interesting that you would want Grohl to be the drummer for Zeppelin when you hate him so much. That’s why your whole rap is so sad. You don’t really stand for anything. You just want attention.”

m | 1/3/2008, 12:52 pm EST

“Really? So that WASN’T Jason Bonham playing the Zep reunion show?”

WTF? I MEANT that the whole idea that it’s Jason’s birthright to drum for LZ and no one else is nice in theory but not necessarily mandatory or realistic. As someone else said – just because a child is borne of a rock star does not mean that child = their rock star parent. Jason did a fantastic job. I am not disputing that. But I am also not going to exclude the possibility of someone else doing a better job just because Jason’s last name is Bonham.

m | 1/3/2008, 12:55 pm EST

That’s your opinion. Just because you might be a professional drummer (By the way, how do you know that I am not a professional drummer as well? Oh that’s right – you don’t.), doesn’t mean that your opinion trumps all others. See, that’s the great thing about art: it’s subjective.

oh yeah, one more thing.

If you think that LOUDNESS for a heavy metal band is some kind of subjective art-school thing (what in the world? you’re definitely not a rock drummer) how could you possibly discern what is the appropriate volume is for Led Zeppelin, hmmm? I mean, since LOUDNESS in the eye of the beholder?

you know what? your concepts on this subject are so ludicrous it’s not even funny!

m | 1/3/2008, 3:21 pm EST

UAW/MF.

WTF is your problem? Why can you not accept the fact that other people have opinions that differ from yours and that art is a matter of taste and everyone’s ear is not the same?

I have done nothing here but state my opinion and you have done nothing but try and prove that my opinion is somehow wrong because you don’t agree with it.

Get a grip, drummer boy.

UAW/MF | 1/3/2008, 4:16 pm EST

Little drummer boy? Hmmm, a little joke in my direction is a lot easier to do than to actually bring musical KNOWLEDGE into the discussion!

If you think that loudness is some kind of etherial mystery like the Mona Lisa you need to come back down to earth.

Simply you can’t have it both ways. You can’t say Dave Grohl is a better fit for Led Zeppelin because he is a louder drummer, if you don’t believe that there is such a thing as a DEFINITION of loudness when it comes to heavy metal drumming!

How about a little history?

There’s a sound that John Bonham laid down which is The Sound, Intensity, and Loudness of the drums of Led Zeppelin.

That’s not open to debate, it’s on every record and every live show ever recorded. It’s not a mystery, it’s there for the listener to hear.

Jason Bonham is THE BEST choice for Led Zeppelin, not only because of his lineage, but because of the work and the time he has put in since the age of 10 (the year of his fathers death) to keep the memory of his father through his playing. First of all, from the age of 3 until 10, HIS FATHER was his one and only drum teacher. In that time, John poured and imparted all of his passion for drumming onto his son.

At the age of 9, during a sound check, young Jason was ripping right along with the band, and Jimmy Page was in shock to find that Jason was back there and not his father.

Jason has spent his life learning every single jot and tittle of his father’s playing. He knows it inside and out. He’s made this his life’s work.

I’ve read about Dave’s interest in Led Zeppelin, that he has tried to learn as many licks as he could.
Now Dave’s a fairly good drummer (not nearly as good as he is hyped to be), but I’ve listened to both of them, and Jason is head and shoulders above Dave in replicating the Zeppelin sound.

In reality, there’s nothing that I’ve heard in Dave’s playing neither with Nirvana, nor the Foos, nor any other project that leads me to believe that he’s more qualified.

Why would Zeppelin consider Dave? Most probably because of his unrelenting pursuit of the job. He even showed up to the Zeppelin show mostly to continue his lobbying. Does Jason want the job? Of course he does!

Why might the 3 living members consider taking Dave? More than likely because of a good con job, and a promising ability to grasp the material. However, I believe that Dave will, try to make it happen by his intensity and hope that his changes to the actual material won’t matter that much.

The only reason Dave wants this job is to feed his now obvious insatiable ego, and he’s willing to push Jason under a bus to do so.

Who should be the drummer of Led Zeppelin? The guy who can play Led Zeppelin drums authentically with the RIGHT level of intensity?

The other issue is who would John want to be the drummer? A the most qualified and if that is Jason, which it is, then John most certainly would want his son to carry on Led Zeppelin.

If John was alive and couldn’t continue as the drummer of Zeppelin, I’m sure in his tough guy way would tell Dave to go fuck himself!

I respect Dave as a musician, but he’s lost my respect as a human being, because he has proven himself to be a bloodless opportunist, who has proven that he doesn’t care about the memory of John, nor has any regard for Jason.

And since he cares more about his own desires than the memory of Bonzo, he in some small way, is also disrespecting Led Zeppelin itself.

You want to make little jokes at my expense? Fine, that’s all you have anyway!

drummr | 1/3/2008, 7:46 pm EST

UAW/MF:

Totally agree with you on this matter. It’s Jason’s gig and I am also sick of these stupid rumours that Dave Grohl is going to take over if in fact a reunion tour takes place.

As a fellow drummer, I also believe that Dave Grohl is overrated. If he is so great why doesn’t he stick to his craft instead of opting to be a mediocre singer/guitarist in a mediocre rock band?

If Jason couldn’t do the gig there are far more competent drummers than Dave Grohl. In fact, I read that Jason would pick Dennis Chambers to fill the spot if he was unable to do so.

Sam Potter | 1/3/2008, 8:16 pm EST

I think it’s hilarious that people are thinking that just because Jason Bonham was Bonzo’s kid, he’s “entitled” to play the drums. That’s absurd.

Face it, John Bonham is dead. Any reunion show will always feel like something is lacking. There are a ton of extremely talented drummers that could easily play Bonham’s parts.

Dave Grohl is an excellent choice for a couple of reasons: he has personality up the ying-yang, and he’s a great rock drummer. Anyone who thinks he couldn’t handle Bonham’s bass drum parts hasn’t listened to “My Hero”. The guy is seriously riding eighth-notes the entire song on the bass. That take some massive stamina. And Grohl’s work with Queens of the Stone Age shows that he can swing as well.

Plus, that’d just be seriously bad ass to see Grohl with Zep. Almost as cool as Bonham. He’s a drum hero, plain and simple.

Agree 100% with UAW/MF | 1/3/2008, 11:44 pm EST

UAW/MF is totally right. Bottom line is that Jason has a huge history with the original 3 that Grohl will never have-personally and musically. Grohl doesn’t have a shot. He doesn’t even make the short list. I doesn’t matter how much Grohl wants it. I want it more than Grohl but that doesn’t mean I’ll get or would even be considered.

Also, and not insignificantly, Jason was absolutely brilliant at the O2 show. He’s proven himself. The job is his. Period. End of discussion.

“There are a ton of extremely talented drummers that could easily play Bonham’s parts.”

Easily, huh? Have you ever actually LISTENED to Led Zeppelin before???

With regards to this “My Hero” business: 1) it’s a slow part 2) it doesn’t even matter because it’s PLAYED ON THE TOMS!!!

“I think it’s hilarious that people are thinking that just because Jason Bonham was Bonzo’s kid, he’s “entitled” to play the drums. That’s absurd.”

I didn’t say he was entiltled just because he was John Bonham’s son. Perhaps maybe you should actually read my article next time!

Jessica Simpson’s quote, in Billboard.com this past week, about the Nashville Music community being very tight knit and supportive of each other… She needs to wake up to the FACT that those folks are REAL MUSICIANS and of an extreme higher calibre she’ll never reach. The Pop Music community is no longer embracing her talentless, lackluster crap. She’s only good for a quickie and a swift kick to the curb to anybody momentarily interested in getting off.

Stupid discussion, so I’ll join in! Jason should have right of first refusal, so if he wants to do it,I think he should do it. Period.

custardpie40 | 1/4/2008, 10:16 pm EST

its Jason by a long shot. He has it in his blood, he’s earned it by practicing all these years, he knows the Zeppelin catalog by heart, the tricks of the trade so to speak from his father. As Jimmy Page said,” he has every Bootleg of Zepp, and can tell you how we did one song one night, and how different it was the next” Jason fits right in with the surviving original members of the greatest band of the 70’s.

Frankie Moonie | 1/4/2008, 10:52 pm EST

Thundering rolling drums on The Ocean care of Bonzo Bonham dna contributor father of Jason whose heart and skill pounds with the same reverberation and love for his 3 faux uncles. Dave who once asked Kurt “hey you just want me to dissappear” he doesn’t love his drums enough he likes trying to be what he wishes Kurt what’ve been had not his fragility overcome him.

For crying out loud, can we have one conversation about Dave or The Foos without Kurt coming up? All the bitter little Seattle slaves just can’t stay away!

But Jason’s the man. Dave can’t get his way all the time (as he’s grown very accustomed to being the dictator in the Foos); that’s life, babe!

StevenX | 1/6/2008, 1:58 pm EST

It’s Jason for my money. Dave is good at what he does but usually lacks the variety, inventiveness and subtlety that Bonzo practically patented and that Jason has done a great job of assimilating. They’re both great drummers but I think Jason can handle far more variety than Dave. Something tells me Dave’s biggest problem would be not knowing when NOT to play.

Dave Grohl has got to stop dreaming about playing for Zep. It’s not going to happen. Jason Bonham owns 1/4 of the Zeppelin name and IS their drummer.

Replacing Jason Bonham with anyone else would be as likely as replacing Jimmy Page with Slash. Or subbing Rod Stewart for Plant!

Stop this nonsense.

hear, hear! Dave Grohl’s damned good but Jason’s the man!

DAVE ROCKS!! | 1/7/2008, 9:52 pm EST

Dave ROCKS! I hope he gets to drum next tour! He deserves the chance he’s always been waiting for.

andrew | 1/10/2008, 7:08 pm EST

Dave Grohl is the greatest drummer alive and he loves zeppelin.
so why not play drums for them?
Just because he is not named Bohnam?
C’mon ! he has to play on tour! it will be his dream!

andrew | 1/10/2008, 7:13 pm EST

also has anyone retarded that judges Dave has realy listened the drums he plays on songs for the deaf for qotsa?
it’s zeppelin’s honor to welcome Dave with them. so shut up finaly and deal with it!

Kill Bill Neil | 1/10/2008, 8:51 pm EST

Hell I rather C Chad Smith play 4 Page & Plant b4 Ghohl

russell | 1/15/2008, 12:05 pm EST

The band has paid their respects to Bonzo. Now it’s been 30 years and it’s time for Jason to honor his father and reunite the greatest band of all time!!

Gimme a break.

Wow | 1/24/2008, 7:12 pm EST

Alot of Grohl thrashing in here its kinda sad since no one ever said he was as good as John Bonham or Jason Bonham, he is just a good drummer that obviously idolizes Led Zeppelin…

Wow | 1/24/2008, 7:13 pm EST

Saying hes not deserving of playing with Zeppelin of even being in the same room is stupid, hes obviously done something good cause you know who he is. And anyone that knocks him isnt deserving of being in the same arena as Zeppelin cause at least they know who he is… they’ve never even heard of you and either has Dave Grohl

ANDREW W | 1/26/2008, 3:40 am EST

Dave Grohl… is the best drummer alive. period.
John Bonham was his biggest drum influence… just b/c jason is johns son… He is noooo dave grohl.
Dave Grohl can kick anyones ass on drums.
If Dave Grohl goes on tour with Zeppelin… I WILL BE THERE!
Greatest rock and roll band in the world… would only be complete with Dave on the kit!

Chappy | 1/27/2008, 6:16 am EST

Dave is a great drummer, but with the respect they have for bonzo it will never be.Hell FOO`S can open for zeppelin and dave can join them for dual drummers on the encore of rock and roll!

forget Grohl | 2/1/2008, 1:47 pm EST

Neil Peart is still better than Grohl anyway…

anonymous | 8/8/2008, 9:35 pm EST

I really think that dave is an amazing drummer, but i do believe bonzo jr should play on this possible tour. Dave is a better drummer for nirvana, Jason is better for zepp. Stop goddamn dissing them both!

You've gotta be kidding me | 1/4/2009, 9:16 pm EST

First it’s all about the frontman, and when we think we have a permanent drummer, his job is up for grabs too?! C’mon people. Will people just make up their minds whether or not they want to do the tour, rather than “expressing willingness”, so we can just get this gossip behind us so we can enjoy a good show with a Zeppelin atitude!
