In the Studio: Franz Ferdinand Say Third Album Is “More Dance Than Rock”

12/28/07, 12:02 pm EST

At their recent shows, Franz Ferdinand have been playing a song that sounds like nothing they’ve ever recorded. The track, “Turn It On,” throws a big, buzzy synth riff from guitarist-keyboardist Nick McCarthy on top of a Cavern Club beat, with frontman Alex Kapranos repeatedly purring Bryan Ferry-style: “It ain’t easy being this kind of lover.”

That one, it’s clear, is a keeper. And Franz have thirty-four or so other new songs in various stages of completion — as well as an idea about the overall direction of their new record. “When we did the second album, the dance and synthesizer side of what we do maybe went to the side and the rock side came to the fore a little bit,” says Kapranos. “I suppose we’re heading back to the idea of dance music. It’s more of a dance record than a rock record.”

And after blazing through the writing and recording of its second album, 2005’s You Could Have It So Much Better, the band is taking its time on the follow-up. “There was a real, almost frantic frustration within the band to get back into the studio when we did that second album,” says Kapranos. “This time we wanted to spend more time developing, and also, I suppose, allowing songs and sounds to evolve more before we ended up writing an album, and absorbing more music and ideas and, I suppose, life itself. And when I say life, I mean life off the road, because I wouldn’t classify life on the road as real life.”

To that end, Franz took their first real break since the band began its album-and-tour cycle in 2004, and the members of the group scattered around the world to unwind. “We completely stopped — Franz Ferdinand was no longer a part of our lives,” says Kapranos, who used the downtime to produce an album by Brit rockers the Cribs. “It was almost like we had to clear the filth of those years of touring from our personalities and our relationships with each other.”

Indie-rock purists might be shocked by Franz’s likely choice of producer: They’ve recorded tracks with Brian Higgins, a British pop hitmaker who’s previously worked with Kylie Minogue, Cher and the girl group Girls Aloud. “It appeals to my contrary side,” says Kapranos. “And I don’t like the distance between bands and pop music there is now. Dr. Dre or Timbaland or the Neptunes are making the songs you’ve never heard before, not the indie kids strumming their fucking guitars.”

Guitars or not, Franz are holding their latest songs to a high standard. Kapranos adds, “Will it fit well on a greatest-hits? If not, then it shouldn’t be on the album.”

FF swooped in with their great first record and then followed it up with an equal. Really looking forward to the next one.

This almost alienated me a little bit. Especially the part about “the indie kids and their fucking guitars”. I love their “fucking guitars” – their riffs are such a signature part of their music. I think it’s why I fell in love with this band in the first place. It’s not that I hate synthesizers – i’m all for the band coming back with something fresh and new after so much time.

“Will it fit well on a greatest-hits? If not, then it shouldn’t be on the album.” somthing’s wrong with you Kapranos these daye ??!!

C’mon is the same old Alex. They always have defended the pop side in their music. There was even some kind of a polemic between Alex and Paul Morley about “popism” and “rockism” in The Gurdian (He dared to accuse Franz of being a “pro-rockism” band !!!). And there were that early article in which Paul defined the band like a mix between a “boy band” and Joy Division: “Boy Division”.
And the true is that they’re so good and so intelligent to be considered one of those cheap guitar bands. They’re so much better. Just listen “Turn it On”:

I can’t wait for this album, the grainy little snippets they’ve been posting on You Tube have been fantastic. And ‘AD’- I don’t think Alex is slagging off guitar-based music, he’s merely suggesting that the avaerage standard of guitar based pop is pretty uninspiring- he’s damn right too! Vive’ Le Franz!

I think that they want something new and fresh , and that’s good … but it’s weird that there wont be “fucking guitars” because that simbolize them.

When Alex Kapranos talks about the indie kids and their “fucking guitars,” he uses the word “strumming,” which to me conotates that whole Belle & Sebastian-influenced school of twee indie rock(Sufjan Stevens, I’m looking at you – wake me up when you get to your 51st album, “Puerto Rico,” lol), not great indie rock bands with great riffs. And I, for one, couldn’t agree more.

simbolize ?

bigshotproducer | 1/4/2008, 10:56 am EST

does anybody know when the album is released or the name of it

Digitalblonde | 1/10/2008, 3:14 pm EST

There’s taking the time to make a decent record and TAKING YOUR FUCKING TIME! There has been almost a three year gap and their last album was mediocre compared to their first. Especially the god-awful rendition they did of Elenor Put Your Boots On as a single release. The album version was much better. I don’t know, I was a fan, but the wait may have been too long…

Citizen | 1/18/2008, 4:13 am EST

This seems a trifle worrying….i’d hate franz to turn out an overproduced pop record a la timbaland…

Old Man | 9/19/2008, 10:26 pm EST

This old-man band needs to tuck in the sheets and stay in bed. 3 years to write 10 or 12 songs, as if they are composing a masterpiece or something! Ridiculous… no one cares. I downloaded the second album then deleted it to save space on my 250GB HD. What a joke!

lavender1960 | 10/12/2008, 11:17 am EST

Here here Carl, just listen to the single Lucid Dreams, those guitars are a-strumming in the classic FF style.

People are so MISUNDERSTANING what Alex is saying, he is saying it is unfortunate and sad and pathetic that the new and original musical directions and songs in the music world are not coming from the indies strumming their guitars but dudes like Timbaland….mind you it just means FF stands out from the crowd which is a good thing on the other hand.

The reality is corporate grunge/corporate rock still persists and all we hear are younger bands with a few exceptions cloning the big established bands, we aren’t hearing anything original except from bands like Franz Ferdinand and the Killers in my respectful opinion. I really love FF when they got all 4 guitars going, I am in heaven and not only look forward to the new album but to seeing them live in Canada.
