Brian Wilson Receives Hootie Salute at Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony

Brian Wilson and Hootie

If the Rock Daily TiVo hadn’t malfunctioned, right now you’d be watching an astonishingly weird clip of Brian Wilson being celebrated at last night’s pre-taped Kennedy Center Honors. After a touching look back at the Beach Boy’s life narrated by Art Garfunkel, Lyle Lovett warbled “God Only Knows.” Then the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, Hootie & the Blowfish!” echoed through the theater and Darius Rucker and Co. took the stage in matching green and blue flannel shirts to perform passable versions of “I Get Around” “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “California Girls” (which were noteworthy mostly for the reaction shots of George Bush jerking his head off-beat in the balcony). An English boys’ choir wrapped things up with a sweet rendition of “Love and Mercy” and as beach balls floated down from the ceiling, Wilson’s neighbor Diana Ross — who was honored by Jordin Sparks, Ciara and gospel star Yolanda Adams, and spent much of Wilson’s tribute stealing his camera time with exaggerated gasps and crazy eyes — reached out and plucked one from the air for him. It was a touching moment. …

But seriously, Hootie? Brian Wilson is the patron saint of indie rock, so certainly they could have found anybody else to come play this gig. Paul McCartney? John Cale? Animal Collective? (We can imagine the post-show now: “Mr. President, I’d like to introduce you to Panda Bear.”) Heck, even John Stamos has proven himself more devoted to the Beach Boys’ catalog.

What a bizarre choice for a tribute. Almost as strange as Albert Meyseles doing a Fall Out Boy doc

the funny thing was, i was thinking the same exact thing. every single thing written.

. . . were you now? how splendid for you!

Anyhow, whoever set up this shindig should’ve known that Brain Wilson has suffered from mental illness for almost 40 years now.

Whoever it was, he sounds like cruel sadist with a warped idea of amusement. Hootie could’ve sent Brian right into a catatonic state!

I hope this organizer clown gets beaten up behind a massage parlor in a neighborhood where cops don’t go!

Arriverdirce, jackass!

The strangest thing I’ve ever seen…the boys choir was horrible also…I can only imagine what was going through Wilson’s head as he heard/saw this travesty. The Shins would’ve been a great choice. Who did Hootie blow to get this gig?

Metal Shawn G | 12/27/2007, 8:27 pm EST

Use a name please? You people make me sick!

My hat goes off to Hootie. I think he did a fabulous rendition of Brian’s songs. I don’t think anyone could have done better. He was awesome.
What was wrong with Brian’s hands — he rarely clapped and did this weird wave most of the time.

“the funny thing was, i was thinking the same exact thing. every single thing written.”

Duh! You’re not thinking AT ALL!

“seen…the boys” “horrible also…I”

And poor poor anon 2, trying so desperately to scurry uphill to avoid further linguistic embarrasement.

Yes, you’ve got it down to 3 periods. But I’m afraid Mistress Nancy is going to have to humiliate you again because WHOOPS! y o u f o r g o t t h e s p a c e s ( . . .)!!!

If you want to learn the english language you have to realize there are rules!

i was so hoping to see Petra Haden and the Sellouts sing their fantastic rendition of “God Only Knows”.

I waited patiently for the BRIAN WILSON tribute part of the Kennedy Honors show the other night. I just happened to be flipping the channels and was not aware it was that time of year again. I seriously doubt his expressions towards the tribute in his honor were exxagerated at all. Brian Wilson simply reacted the way Brian Wilson has reacted for decades post the 1960’s. He seemed very touched. Though some of the comments come from folks who thought the performers for Brian were somewhat bizarre, they missed the point of how far reaching and influential Brian Wilson’s talent has inspired and encompassed humanity, crossed cultural barriers, and made multitudes happy. God Bless Brian Wilson – he’s suffered and been tortured more than enough. It’s pointless to continue to crucify him.

Brian Wilson’s reactions, however you may term them, are more a factor of being medicated for the psychological issues of his life than anything else. The boys choir brought tears to my eyes (in a good way).

Say what you like, the influence of Brian’s genius transcends any perceptions of that multitude of talentless yobs with ten pounds of muscle holding their ears apart

i watched the kennedy honors and my thoughts were as follows: brian wilson seemed as if he was saying to himself “where am i? who are all these people? and why am i here?” but after reading the other comments i must admit i was entirely clueless to brian’s mental issues which would explain his (non) reaction to the entire tribute…..on another note i felt the performers and most especially hootie and the blowfish did an outstanding job with keeping the energy up during the tribute!

“i was entirely clueless to brian’s mental issues which would explain his (non) reaction to the entire tribute…”

Oh please. He knew EXACTLY what was going on. He just made another classic album like three years ago!!!

Enough with this “he was out of it” crap! Even on his worst day he has a higher brain function than you do!

Phantom Of The Paradise (1974) | 12/29/2007, 10:13 pm EST

“entire tribute…..on another note”

people who don’t know how to use correct punctuation (elipsis) should be tortured and killed!

Artie Fields | 12/29/2007, 10:59 pm EST

Yes, it was a strange choice to have Hootie and the Blowfish perform a tribute to Brian Wilson, but they did a great job. The boy’s choir did a beautiful interpretation of a wonderful song composed by one of Rock’s greatest genuises.

Some of you have great comments about Brian Wilson and some of you seem to be clueless about his life. Brian Wilson is one of the “GREATEST” musical arrangers of the 60s and 70s. His talent will be compared to Ludwig van Beethoven by generations to come.

Brian Wilson, yeah I remember him now. Isn’t he the guy who owns a company that makes volleyballs?

John | 1/12/2008, 1:20 pm EST

Greatest musician in the history of the world. Nothing else need be said.
