The five much-ballyhooed remixes from Michael Jackson’s twenty-fifth anniversary edition of Thriller have hit the Web. First up, there’s Will.i.am/Fergie’s take on “Beat It,” which is pretty solid, if only because it reminds us of the Alvin & The Chipmunks version of the song. Alvin and the boys set the bar high, rocking the glove and even breaking out the Moonwalk, but Fergie’s helium voice does the job here. Will.i.am’s other two “remixes,” for “P.Y.T.” and “The Girl Is Mine,” are probably the best of the five-song lot, as Will updates the songs’ original sound to make them dancefloor-worthy twenty-five years after their release.
Kanye West’s reworking of “Beat It” is a bit less imaginative. West only appears in monosyllabic groans, muttering “Yeah” and “Uh Uh” numerous times but never busting out an actual verse, keeping MJ’s vocals intact with the focus on the more orchestral moments of the song. And then there’s Akon’s flag-burning remix of “Wanna Be Startin’ Something.” After thirty seconds, the only thing you’ll wanna be startin’ is another song, as Akon takes all that is great about the original and transforms it into what sounds like Sean Kingston doing a piano ballad before shockingly launching into the climatic “Ma Ma Se, Ma Ma Sa, Ma Ma Coo Sa” chants after less than one minute in. If you can make it past a minute-thirty, let us know how it was. We’re too busy listening to the original.
