Gadget Envy: Boston Acoustics TVee Model Two

12/20/07, 6:29 pm EST

What It Is: A nicely priced, two-piece instant home-theater speaker system.

Who It’s For: Anybody who wants a compact, home theater with minimal wires for less than $500, as well as those who want a quick upgrade from bad-quality built-in TV speakers.

Why It’s Worthy: It doesn’t take up a lot of space or clutter your place up with a bunch of wires, since the system consists of just a soundbar that connects to your TV via a standard R/L stereo cable and a wireless subwoofer. Plus, it lets you use your TV remote to control volume and the on/off function. The TVee Model Two offers instant detailed, quasi-surround sound and bass-oomph with minimal set-up.

Our Only Complaint: Though it works well for the dialogue, sound effects and action noise of movies and TV, it’s less than ideal for music (too much bass, too little mid-range detail). TVee Model 2 might disappoint audiophiles looking for a music-system replacement.

Where to Get It/Cost: $399.99, bostonacoustics.com

I’d get it, but I’m never home.

Sounds great, but can’t get it to “learn” a remote. Tried four different ones. It says on the box it will work with your tv remote but in the instructions it says some remotes “cannot be programmed”. The firedog guy could not get it to work either.
Back to the store it goes………..

Got it tonight for Christmas. Mine works fine. Maybe the TVee Model Two just doesn’t like you!

Set up took longer than expected with the learning of my remotes. The mute, standby and volume down modes were fine, only the increase refused to work. The solution was to reset the learning system from scratch. Now it all sounds fab.

Forget about programming the remote unless you have an older TV. If yours is like mine, just change the audio output to variable. My TV then turns off its built-in speakers and the TVtwo uses the variable output to modulate the volume. You still have to fine tune the sensivitivity of the bar and the volume of the sub-woofer. Mine works great, and is a great improvement over the original speakers.
