Eagles Turn Down Super Bowl, Prefer Grand Ole Opry

12/20/07, 11:46 am EST

Much like the Philadelphia football team of the same name, Don Henley’s Eagles will not be playing at the Super Bowl next year. The Eagles turned down an offer to perform at the big game, and since Henley didn’t say why, we can only presume either they didn’t want to perform in front of a billion people or they didn’t relish following up Prince’s scorching halftime act from last year (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be doing the honors, instead). Or, perhaps, they have totally different aspirations, like playing Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. “That would be an honor,” says Henley. While it probably is an honor, we’re talking Super Bowl here. Still, the statement was one of many Henley quotes that showcase how the Eagles’ slow slide from rock to country has rapidly accelerated (the fact that their latest album is supposed to be only available in Wal-Mart represents a pretty strong appeal to the heartland; the fact that the double disc has repeatedly beat out Garth Brooks and Carrie Underwood to top Billboard’s country chart proves it’s working). Other choice quotes: “Certainly, country is one of the last bastions of good songwriting — and of singing in tune,” “As long as we’re on the charts. Any chart will do,” and “Country music is now akin to what my generation was listening to in the ’60s and ’70s.” So does that make Kenny Chesney Jimi Hendrix? Does Carrie Underwood = Janis Joplin? Henley, we need answers.

So as if its not enough to hear about how bad the Birds are this year on every sports website, now even Rolling Stone is scoring off us….

TP & The Heartbreakers will rock the Super Bowl just fine ! ZZ Top at the Orange Bowl for The Jayhawks , comes in for a close tie for Halftime entertainment….

Swingline | 12/20/2007, 12:51 pm EST

The Eagles would be a good fit to play halftime of a polo match.

Jughed | 12/20/2007, 1:16 pm EST

The Eagles would be better playing halftime at an Enron meeting than the Superbowl.

Jake Burns | 12/20/2007, 1:27 pm EST

This guy is/was/will always be a moron.

Oddjob | 12/20/2007, 1:50 pm EST

Well, the 70’s Eagles could be considered a country band, although at the time they were just a rock band who played softly. Jackson Browne, same thing. It’s just that today everything is classified in these strict genres that causes the confusion. I hope the digital download/MP3 revolution helps do away with all these genres and subgenres and people can just pay attention to what they’re listening to, not what chart it belongs on.

I’d rather hear Tom Petty. The Eagles are doing the same things the Dixie Chicks did (in reverse) by adding another audience to their fanbase. The strange part is that there is not a bigger bunch of Republican anti-intellectuals out there than a country music fan. What does Don Henley have in common with these people?
I wanna see Henley face off with Toby Keith.

That said, the new Eagles record has some moments (should have been one disc) esp Busy Being Fabulous which could be a big hit single rock or country.

I can think of two reasons why the Eagles wouldn’t be playing: 1)not getting paid enough & 2)not getting paid enough. Don Henley is an extremely talented yet, sadly, very arrogant individual. Bring on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!

CoolDude | 12/20/2007, 6:48 pm EST

Interesting. Who is going to play then?

wrecksracer | 12/20/2007, 7:59 pm EST

Hank Williams Sr. = Country
Eagles = Soft Pop

Tommy | 12/21/2007, 8:16 am EST

Answers? Well, Kenny Chesney is not Hendrix, but then the Eagles were never the Velvet Underground.

Think of it this way: country music is more soft-rock/folk/singer-songwrit er oriented than before. Jackson Browne, James Taylor, the late Dan Fogelberg, even Bruce Springsteen could find a comfy home on a country station with some of their tunes. I believe this is what Mr. Henley means.
As for playing the Super Bowl, the idea probably just doesn’t appeal to them. Yes, the Eagles have always been too money-focused, but most folks do the Super Bowl for the exposure – the bump in album sales – not the NFL paycheck. Guessing the Eagles are allowing themselves the freedom their stardom allows.

More J.D. Souther tunes!

Everyone talks about money, could you afford to go to the super bowl?
I think Henley and the Eagles are leaning toward country because thats where the audience is.What is there in rock these days, hip hop rap songs sung but not written.I think the Eagles are fine in Todays Country Music….

Beltway Greg | 12/21/2007, 11:05 am EST

Frey, Walsh, and Timothy B. should kick his ass. How stupid can this guy be? I guess people who like country don’t watch football? More likely is that Henley couldn’t tack on $10/ticket to donate to the Walden Woods Foundation or one of his pet charities. What a pompous fool. Shouldn’t he be running for congress about now?

Beltway Greg
Still haven’t bought the CD.

The Eagles obsessive money grubbing is a to compensate for their small penises; and who better than I to share that factoid. Too bad I had my go with them during the “free love” era. I could be a rich girl now….

Cowboy Bob | 12/21/2007, 12:18 pm EST

Yeeee Hawwwww! The Eagles going country is like the best news I’ve heard since my cousin agreed to marry me, by golly! It would be great to see them play at the Grand Ole Opry, the bestest show in the land. Country is be the music that the good Lord, praise be His name, most approves of and The Eagles are certainly going in the “right” direction. That dang rock and roll music is the music of the devil I tell ya and all your souls are gonna burn in hell listening to that there lyrics of filthy sexual perversions, violence, abortions, and hate. Praise be to Jesus for the country music! The Eagles have cleansed their souls from that garbage rock and roll. Long live the South! Yeeee haawwww!

Actually, Cowboy Bob, God likes all kinds of music.

Jay | 12/29/2007, 6:25 am EST

It isn’t so far-fetched to see The Eagles topping
the Country Charts. After all, we live in a world where Nat King Cole is in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…with Madonna waiting in the wings.

Joan | 12/29/2007, 9:21 pm EST

We were so looking forward to the
Eagles at the Super Bowl!
Now we are so disapointed!!!
