Video: Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt Raise the “No Nukes” Flag Again

12/19/07, 6:28 pm EST

Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt stopped by the Rolling Stone offices this week on an urgent mission: to prevent a sneaky move by some Republican congressmen to insert money for nuclear power plants into an energy bill making its way through Congress.

RS senior editor David Fricke talked to Raitt and Browne about the video they made for the cause: a new version of the Stephen Stills classic “For What It’s Worth” with Keb ‘Mo, Graham Nash and Ben Harper. To learn more about Browne and Raitt’s fight, go to nukefree.org; to get involved, call your congressperson and demand that loan guarantees for new nuclear power plants be stripped from the federal appropriations bill.

78% of the electricity in France is provided by Nuclear power.

Don’t know who the right-wing nuts are hanging on this site, but nuke power is not wrong because it does or not pollute today, as produced, but the waste,(Duh)which last for eons and gets stored in someone else’s back yard (read “Nevada”).

Nobody has the right to speak nor make choices for future generations.

20 years for alternatives? Lie. They are here, been here, from Bio-Mass to LnG, Solar Concentrators (now @ 40% heat to Electric)& Hi-Power Wind Turbines.

When people like Browne & Raitt bring attention to the conditions on our troubled planet, why would anyone criticize them for what others are too fat, lazy & content to do themselves?

GET INVOLVED. Build up, why tear down?

I think that when people are in a position such as Jackson, Bonnie, Nash, Mo, and Harper, it is refreshing that with their extra time they try to help the world and give back instead of just take i.e. buy a new yacht and sail the Caribbean for the season.

I think it’s refreshing to hear people speaking out and inciting needed change regardless of thier chosen career. We’re all Americans and if somebody with some kind of name recognition doesn’t speak up, we’ll be left at the mercy of the professional polititians that have done relatively nothing with this issue for as long as it’s been an issue. That’s funny about letting congress decide what is “good music”. I’m sure they would be just as effective at that as they have been coming up with solutions to our energy/environmental problems…joke!

Getting political advice from musicians makes as much sense as expecting Congress to legislate “good music”. Both their careers and their advice have seen better days.

It’s either coal or nuclear for the forseeable future. Anything else is,at least, 2 decades away. Pick one of these energy sources or plan on living like Ted Kazinski, unless that’s how these people expect us peons to live our lives while they live in their oversized houses, vacation homes and hotels.

All of these old rockers obviously did to many DRUGS!!!! Perhaps we can generate power from the hot air that comes from the mouths of aging rockers. They really do not live in the real world.

questionable arena? | 12/20/2007, 9:45 am EST

Anyone claiming to be religious should focus on the word “love”, and be thankful these “rock musicians” have the courage to take a stand against the dirty politics behind this dirty power. And we should all be focused on the reponsibility God has placed with us as stewards of his great gift; this planet Earth.

Hi: Residual 60’s paranoia about the big, bad nuclear boogeyman continues. Let’s be groovy sheeple, rock star struck and don’t let inconvenient, boring facts get in the way of our good time party…er, cause!!
Being a news junkie, I haven’t seen any reports of overt or suspected deaths caused by electricity generating nuclear power since the unsafe Chernobyl or Three Mile Island accidents. However, during the same time, many into the thousands have died in coal mine disasters…No coal isn’t as sexy as no nukes, I guess….Coal causes greenhouse emissions. Nuclear power causes zero, zip, nada of same…
What about automobiles, trucks, etc? Thousands are killed by them every year… Can we have a benefit tour to get rid of them too??? Facts versus fear. Please choose one. Power To The People, Right On! ~JBK

Will Jackson and Bonnie pay my electric bill?

Dona Lynette Stewart | 12/19/2007, 6:54 pm EST

I am not political, but I am religious. Rock musicians need to focus on the word love. I doubt they know what they are talking about when it comes to nuclear power. Trying to influence America is a questionable arena. I do love Jackson Browne, and especially “Runnin on empty”. Merry Christmas and Peace on Earth
