Stephen Stills Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, According to Graham Nash

12/18/07, 4:41 pm EST

Last night on Larry King Live, Graham Nash revealed that Stephen Stills, his bandmate in Crosby, Stills and Nash, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The revelation followed a discussion between King and Nash about the death of singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, who suffered from prostate cancer for three years before passing last Sunday. According to Nash, Stills — unlike Fogelberg — caught his at an early stage, and will be operated on January 3rd, which also happens to be Stills’ birthday.

Been a huge fan for decades. Seen you perform at Wembley (UK), Woolongong (NSW Aust) with Manasses(?), Santa Barbara Bowl - all magic venues with magic music and you were as always brilliant. Many thanks for bringing sunshine into my life with your music.

I am Scottish & been a fan for 40 years. Still play Steve Stills music regularly. Saw u at Wembley in 1974. U are the king of CSNY and the best guitarist ever along with Hendrix and Page. Long may u carry on!

My main inspiration on guitar. After hearing of your diagnosis, I got myself tested. May you have a speedy recovery. There is more music to be made. May God bless and keep you always.

Martin Smuts | 3/23/2008, 9:43 am EST

I’ve been listening to Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y for decades and have seen them (or variations of them) perform at least 15 times. Not once was I let down. What a fantastic group of talented musicians. Stephen’s axe work has inspired thousands, no doubt! Thanks for inspiring me as well, Stephen! Now pick up that Martin and play! No doubt, new wonderful music will be the silver lining to your temporary dark cloud of illness.

M.D. Marshall | 2/24/2008, 3:01 pm EST

The news of your successful operation was a relief to all of your fans. Now quit scarin’ us like that.
It was such a privlege to see you play with the boys last summer in Detroit. And “Treetop Flyer” was a spectacular inclusion. My brother and I remain in awe at the music you have created for this world. Stay well with the elements of good health.

Steve Karr | 2/9/2008, 4:15 pm EST

Thanks for providing the soundtrack to my life. Get well, soon.

Dear Mr. Stills,

for whatever this is worth . . .I just thought you’d like to hear! I have, over the course of my 45 years been known to have “messages” or signs, if you will, just come at me apparently out of nowhere. The morning of Jan. 3rd I was at home doing my normal routine and found myself humming and singing to myself “Teach Your Children Well”. 10 minutes or so after this, I was in my car driving to my weekly Bible Study and over the radio came the DJ, talking about that you were going into the hospital for a surgury that day . . and that it also happened to be your birthday.

Wierd, I know! Anyway, I thought you might appreciate knowing that I mentioned this to the group of women in my study and we all said a prayer for you. I’ve continued to keep you in my prayers and have no doubt that you will make a full recovery!

After nearly 40 years of your contributions to us, it’s our turn to do something for you.

You are a superlative musician and what you can do with a guitar has always been sheer magic.

We wish for you the magic of a full and speedy recovery.

Be well always and thank you for all that you have done for others through your music and your positive efforts to help those less fortunate.

The lead guitar in the very last part of “Guardian Angel” on the Stills/Young album is very very good. I know it was you that played that. No one on Earth could have played that better than you did. You were miles above Earth when you played that.

Now get well soon. We want more albums!

To Stephen (hoping he will read it),

When I was in my 20s I went through a lot of emotional hurt. I found that one of the only things in life that I could relate to were your lyrics, and your lyrics helped to lessen my load and made me feel like I wasn’t alone. “Trying to remember that getting it wrong is what everyone does” and so many other lyrics I’ve been able to relate to and will never forget.

You’re written some of the best music I’ve ever heard. My wife and I saw you play the Music Hall in Boston in 1976. Do take care. God bless.

Tallullah | 1/3/2008, 11:25 am EST

Stephen, I’ve loved you and your music for forty years — never underestimate how many people are praying for you and pulling for you. I’ll think of you all day, and wait to hear the good news.

Many years ago I sat in the rain in an outdoor amphitheatre during a Crosby, Stills and Nash appearance where Stephen was sick but ever the trouper played his heart out AND after the show rushing into his hotel — illness and all — he took the time give me an autograph. I’d always adored his music, but after that concert I admired him even more as a human being. God Bless Stephen Stills.

Ray Brightman | 12/29/2007, 4:00 pm EST

Stephen, I had your 1st CSN album on cassette in Viet Nam. The only music I had. Still listen to it today. God bless you. You mentioned Jesus in Black Coral. The way ,the truth and the light.

Doris and Randy Butler | 12/29/2007, 10:14 am EST

When we first heard the news about your illness, the media made it sound much worse than it apparently. We are sure that you will make a full recovery and continue to make the beautiful music that makes all of us feel like we are your friends. A very Happy Birthday and Speedy Recovery. We love you and are pulling for you!

Jerry Lawrence | 12/28/2007, 8:26 pm EST

Polly | 12/27/2007, 10:21 pm EST

Stephen Stills you are one of my favorite musicians. Certainly with this news of your ill health, you will be in my prayers and thoughts. As a nurse, I know and encourage men to get tested for prostate cancer. I am at this point begging my husband to go have an exam . Best wishes to you. Your music has touched my life for more than 30 years. I saw you in Richmond, Ky when I was yet a teenager in concert and was hooked. May God’s healing hand touch you and give you strength..

Glenda | 12/25/2007, 7:52 pm EST

Stephen,

Thoughts and prayers are with you. I’ll never forget meeting you at the Cincinnati Zoo when you did a solo concert.

Long may you run….

All the best,

Glenda

I was so saddened to hear about your prostate cancer news and wish you the very best for a speedy recovery. I am touched that so many people are writing in and hope you see how you have so many people who care about your well-being. You are a musical inspiration to me, so talented and special. I have seen you not only with CSN&Y, but also at your “Evening with Stephen Stills” intimate concert in NYC for the past 2 years. This is how I celebrated my birthday for the past 2 years and it was the greatest gift. I will pray for your health and wish you a happy birthday.

Hi Stephen,
I have thought of you for years and wondered if you were the “Steve Green” that I met once in a Big Sur, California camp ground. I was 14 and you were 20 something I think. I put on blue eye shadow but I have green eyes. You told me not to try and disguise my natural beauty. You were so kind to me. If it wasn’t you, that’s okay. I still think about you and always will. Right now I am wishing you the best and for a speedy recovery. Love your music and you are a great guitar player. Keep on keepin on!

Fight the good fight Stephen!!!
I dont know if you’ll see this message, or any of these…but you must know and feel how loved you are. Draw strength, and take heart. Down the road, this bump will provide fuel for some more of your great lyrics and music! We met and shook hands once, and I have one of your 0-45S Martins. You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers each time I play it.

Stephen,

You have another option besides surgery. Proton therapy. My husband is currently receiving proton treatment at Loma Linda University Hospital in Calif. Check out this option BEFORE SURGERY. This is a proven technology with virtually no side effects. Most urologists will not tell their patients about this treatment. Please please research this option.

This can be beat, I was diagnosed 6 1/2 years ago, and am living proof that early detection works. I had surgery, and am living a full life. Every man needs to be tested, between 40 - 50. I might not be here at age 54.
My prayers are with you Stephen. You’ll beat this.

re: stupid people piss me off | 12/19/2007, 8:50 am EST

what a total lack of respect for a man’s work, and a complete lack of compassion for a fellow human-f/o to you idiots!!

All I see here is someone made a joke about the way he looks, not about his cancer, nor his career. You see words that aren’t there. Maybe you have ADD or something.

Chuck Gallagher | 12/19/2007, 10:27 pm EST

Having been diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 47, I know full well that early detection is key to winning the battle with prostate cancer. Some aren’t so lucky. With Dan Fogelberg passing and witnessing the death of my father-in-law from advanced prostate cancer - the best I can say to all men is be tested early and often. Good luck to Stephen! Again, as a professional speaker, http://www.chuckgallagher.com - had I not found out early (quite by accident) I would now be facing the fate of the late Dan Fogelberg. Do not let a simple blood test stand in the way of your health.
