Dan Fogelberg, R.I.P., More Led Zeppelin Tour Rumors, New Anthrax Singer and More

12/17/07, 9:15 am EST

  • Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg died yesterday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer for more than three years. He was fifty-six. Fogelberg started out performing in rock bands near his hometown of Peoria, Ill., then switched to performing solo in college, becoming popular in the 70s and 80s with songs like “Longer,” “The Power of Gold,” “Leader of the Band” and “Same Old Lang Syne.” Fogelberg released his last album, Full Circle, in 2003. A message posted yesterday on his official site says Fogelberg died with his wife at his side and says, “His strength, dignity, and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.”
  • The Monday morning Led Zeppelin rumor mill comes via the Belfast Telegraph, who is reporting Zep is negotiating to play a gig there. The band debuted “Stairway to Heaven” there in 1971, promoter Peter Aiken, whose father organized the original gig, says “If Zeppelin go touring as has been suggested, I will definitely bring them on an overdue return to Belfast, as they are keen on the idea.”
  • They didn’t pull a Journey and pick a new lead singer via YouTube, but Anthrax have found their own previously unheard-of frontman to replace original lead singer Joey Belladonna. Long Island native Dan Nelson, a personal trainer and part-time singer, was officially announced as the band’s new singer.
  • Hard rock acts Slipknot, Disturbed and Mudvayne will tour together next summer according to HardDrive Radio. Though no further detais on the outing have been released, Slipknot is expected to put out another album next year.
  • A pre-Robbers & Cowards Cold War Kids release is is up for free download on the RCRD LBL blog this week. The Mulberry Street EP was originally released in 2005 and its six tracks are not on 2006’s Robbers.

joe. | 12/18/2007, 10:11 am EST

I fondly remember leader of a band when I was child in early 80s and then again when I was in an acapella group which did a rendition of your masterpiece in the late 90’s. Gold Bless you.

joe. | 12/18/2007, 10:14 am EST

God Bless… I fondly remember your song leader of the band, and longer as a child and a young man in college.

Judy R. King | 12/18/2007, 10:54 am EST

Oh Dan, how many times did I listen to your wonderful tunes over the last 34 years………..I even attended your birthday party at The Exit Inn in Nashville in 1977 (I think). I had such a “crush” …you were beautiful. And you’ll certainly grace Heaven with your voice and music. We will miss you here on earth.

I will perform Leader Of The Band
as a tribute to you Dan till I am physically unable to do so. One of the greatest songwriters ever. You have touched so many hearts and lives with your music, You will never be forgotten. Christ will welcome you with open arms in heaven.. to lead His Band.

Blessings to your family!

FYI | 12/18/2007, 5:33 pm EST

that’s perfectly acceptable and I feel like real heel for doing it (not really), but I know somebody laughed their ass off!

Kevin | 12/18/2007, 10:18 pm EST

Being a Singer/Songwriter myself and playing the “circuit” with my acoustic guitar … I gravitated to the sound of Dan Fogelberg and learned many of his songs. I ended up marrying the girl who played me “Longer” when it first came out … even before they started playing it on the radio. As time went on, I ended up seeing him in concert more than any other touring act – with his band and solo – and became even more enamored by his art and talent … and so many beautiful and poetic songs! I can’t believe he’s left us so soon. I guess it’s true what they say – only the good die young. We will miss you, Captured Angel. Rest In Peace.

“The higher we climb, the more we can see, The more we can see, the less that we know, The less that we know, the more we yearn, And the more we yearn, the higher we climb.” Thanks Dan …you touched my soul, elevated my spirit and changed my life. Goodness Bless You. — Boulder, CO

“There’s a light in the depth of the darkness – let it shine”

Thanks Dan, I hope you could hear me and many others playing our guitars and singing your songs the last few days.

Few could mesmorize an audience alone on stage as Dan Fogelberg could. Let us not forget, Fogelberg was the first baby boom musician to do solo acoustic concerts, way before MTV’s unplugged and all the other musicians who would follow. Quite amazing or maybe really not that surprising that MTV never recognized or even invited Dan Foegelberg to the unplugged program even though he created it.

Your words & music have helped shape who I am.
Lessons learned are like bridges burned, You only need to cross them but once…Is the knowledge gained worth the price of the pain, Are the spoils worth the cost of the hunt….rest in Peace my “Old Friend” your songs & words will live forever…..

“One last time, sing that old song we used to know, but this time sing a little more slowly…”

Nancy Fury | 12/19/2007, 7:29 pm EST

I will miss you all the days of my life. You gave me such solace growing up and such hope. Many times your music was a comfort. My daughter is a talented guitarist and I was able to take her to one of your shows just prior to your illness. I am so grateful that she got to see you. Dan, you inspired her. I shared the news of your passing and we wept together over the loss. Thank you for all the music. Love Nancy

Donn | 12/20/2007, 3:45 pm EST

I used to think I was the only one who “got you” and would buy multiple copies of your albums whenever I saw them for that reason. I smile to learn that so many others appreciate you the way I always have. You’ve inspired my music more than anyone ever. What a life you lived. Thank you especially for Netherlands.

Eugenia | 12/20/2007, 10:55 pm EST

Oh, I thought everyone knew about saw palmetto. I am so sad to hear of the passing of such a talented man who has left us at such a young age. Many condolences to the Mrs. and other family members.

To Lose Somebody like Dan is like losing my family Member

Roger | 12/27/2007, 10:54 pm EST

Dan – thanks for all the beautiful music, words and emotion. you’re a true renaissance man and will be missed. Rest easy pal.

Jim | 12/31/2007, 4:12 pm EST

Maybe this is finally what I’ve been looking for – the posts of so many who clearly “got” Dan Fogelberg like I did. We truly are a community, connected by his lyrics and music. Wysteria continues to be my favorite, although every last song on his first four albums was great. Dancing Shoes made me ache in a way that no other experience ever has.

We’re all fragments of the big bang. Must be all of us that love Dan we’re in the same batch of quarks and photons, primeval atoms…that’s all that matters, pun included. I never saw Dan in concert…I continue to dream that I’ll see him someday. Two-hours after he died…I believe he came to my aide or else I would have died the same day. Frozen roads caused me to slide sideways down a portion of a 1/4 mile-long hill…a truck coming up the hill toward me was a second from hitting me. Considering all the facts…it was close. Following the incident, I found out Dan was watching over all of us. He’s gonna help us save this planet too! “Deep in my brain I can hear a refrain of” his “soul as he rises and sings.” His vision is our release.
