Some of the best songs of 2007:

Umbrella- Ok it is a very catchy song, and I enjoy the version without Jay Z rapping on it.

Rehab- same with this excellent song. I really hate the version with Jay Z rapping on it.

Hey There Delilah- a nice little folk rocker.

Anything from Bruce’s Magic album.

Gunslinger- Another great song by John Fogarty.

Gone Gone Gone- Plant and Krauss; one of the best Everly Bros covers I’ve heard.

How Long- by the Eagles and it sounds like it could have been recorded in the early seventies yet it has a timeless quality.

Lost Highway- critics seem to hate these guys but this is a great song from a great underapreciated album.

Dance Tonight- and other songs from Memory Almost Full.

Beautiful Girls- Sean Kingston. Also Alicia’s No One.

I don’t think that 2007 was a bad year for music, but not a great one. I think that 2003 was the worst year ever for music.

1. Come On – Lucinda Williams: When most mainstream songs are barely one dimensional. Lucinda Williams express a giant dynamite keg worth of emotions and layers with just 2 words.

2. You Know I’m No Good – Amy Winehouse: “Rehab” is also really good. This song is more potent with the mixture of defiance and regret.

3. Love Is Not A Competition (But I’m Winning) – Kaiser Chiefs: How did this band get overlooked this year? “Yours Truly, Angry Mob” is a great album full of snarky, bittersweet rock songs.

4. Sinkin’ Soon – Norah Jones: The best political song this year from an unlikely source. The dixieland arrangement complements the lyrics that mirrors the way everybody pay attention to the news everyday.

5. Hang Me Out To Dry – Cold War Kids: A great retro-sounding rock song.

Honorable Mentions: “Paranoid Like Me” – Cowboy Troy; “Threesome” – Melissa Etheridge; “15″ – Rilo Kiley; “Never Again” – Kelly Clarkson; “Gone, Gone, Gone” – R. Plant & A. Krauss; “Choices” – Bettye LaVette; “No Bad News” – Patty Griffin; and “Tick Tick Boom” – The Hives.

JSuzart,

Before you start calling us morons for daring to have different tastes than you (Foo Fighters), maybe you should get your song titles right. It’s “Tears Dry ON Their Own.” Luckily, none of your choices will be counted by Rolling Stone since you listed more than 5 songs.

Metal Shawn G | 12/15/2007, 7:25 pm EST

re: JSuzart | 12/15/2007, 6:58 pm EST

First off, Impossible Germany is an absolutely stunningly gorgeous song, start to finish. wilco NAILED that song.

second, echoes, silence, patience and grace was a terrible record. and this comes from a big Foo Fighters fan. Dave Grhl needs to rethink his musical direction, because E,S,P&G sounds reptitive, and already done to death

Fe, Fe, Fe, you were jonesingly deprived from peeping from one of the most mad raw, mixtape(in which I first heard it from my friend’s copy)/stereo worthy remixes of the year. The “Rehab” remix went down earlier this year when Amy Winehouse had another legion of HARDCORE fans-mainly Snoop, Mos, Ghostface, as well as others. The more her star continued shining, the more her cult began to increase. So without a doubt, Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” remix with Jay Z WAS the breadwinner.
