Madonna Leads 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

12/13/07, 8:06 am EST

Rolling Stone has the news first: Madonna leads the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2008 inductees (this is her first year of eligibility as her first single, “Everybody,” came out twenty-five years ago, in 1982). For the full list of who got in (and some surprising word of who didn’t), click here for the story.

Not having Jethro Tull is insanity.
Power Rock, themed albums like Aqualung and Thick as a Brick, old English melodies fused with unusual twists and instrumentation, great live shows, songs like Going up the Pool, many great songs on every one of their albums. awesome guitar work, probably the most original band in history along with the Beatles.

Richard Toth | 4/12/2008, 11:13 pm EST

No Jethroe Tull is a disaster. Unique, power rock, variety, great live shows, fused old English type
melodies(the core of Auch of American music) Theme albums like Thick as a Brick and Aqualung, Still touring and sounding great.

Any and all of these deserve to be in the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME before Madonna.

Let’s face it, teh RRHF is a private organization with private axes to grind. They don’t have to be fair. They own the place. Get your own club and you can allow only those YOU want in. What a shame and a SHAM. It could have been a legitimate authority…but IT IS NOT.

Madonna fans are washed in the head. She by definition is an artisan-she is not an artist-the definition of an artist is one who creates original work.(period) Any imitation or re-invention is not art its a by product of anothers creation-artisans legally can be defined in the term artisan-artists they are not.At any rate Madonna isn’t alone in the entertainment industry using the media and agents/management to climb to the ratings top charts.I think its really American to do good things and charity work then take over the media and governments-look George Bush declared war-is sinking America in the hole 12billion a month-but he has time to give to AidZ and Africa-Madonna does the same-you vote her in-and she does things-its magick-is it regressive Christian penance?-take/then/give?- “You’ ll See” it will feel good to you that she got the award after she saves the planet in her next music video.
She is the only one that has what she has, right? Of course-she’s the queen. “God Save The Queen”!

WTF? | 3/11/2008, 9:24 pm EST

Let me start by saying i do not hate Madonna or her music. I think it is OK, and I know a lot of people love it, and they are entitled to do so. But rock and roll is a huge music genre that many people believe deserves its own distinction and honors. And Madonna’s music isn’t rock and roll. It’s disco or pop, but certainly it doesn’t have anything to do with rock and roll. Put her in the disco hall of fame, or the dance-pop hall of fame or something. But let rock and roll be what it has always been, and let it have its own space.

thomkat | 3/11/2008, 7:58 pm EST

You got to be kiddin’…how could you leave Madonna out…you must have lived in a closet the last 30 years….I guess Elvis didn’t do much either????

Angie | 3/11/2008, 3:39 pm EST

it’s very clear in alot of these comments, that some people will try to rain on anyone’s parade. i’m sure half of these people werent even born 25 years ago. Madonna’s roots are with rock & roll and punk and the only reason she’s still around is because she has grown, and has been very versitle as an artist. so pop, rock, punk, techno, whatever the genre, she’s done it all. that’s why we ALL know her name. put down the hater-ade.

doris | 3/11/2008, 2:43 pm EST

Yes, can you see Madonna sitting around the fire in her old age with her grown children and grandchildren around her, “oh look, mommy, Grandma took her bra off around all those people in public, look she is showing her breasts on stage, oh what is that german shepherd doing to grandma in that picture, why are all those men screaming and laughing at grandma are you sure that is you Grandma??” what a terrible legend to leave your children and grand children. and what is even sadder still, is the world the applauds such behavior!!!

Brittany | 3/11/2008, 2:39 pm EST

Hey Robert! Dont mess with Madonna! She is great!!! I love her and her music! She is fantastic!!!

hugh | 3/11/2008, 2:30 pm EST

now, now people lets give the woman her dues, while there is absolutly no accounting for taste (thus the fact that she has been inducted.)she does have a great marketing and PR team why else would millions of people buy her stuff, its certainly not because of her talent heck she can’t even pull off a good british accent. And on a more sarcastic note madonna! girlfiend you’re from NEW YORK!

Real Muzik | 3/11/2008, 2:27 pm EST

Finally,Madonna getting recognition. This women is a great entertainer. She along with Springsteen,U2,Tina Turner, Cindi Lauper,REM, along with other 80’s vocalists were the last remaining folk that inspired and made real good music. Today’s music is aweful bears no meaning and has nothing positive to say.I am hapy to hear Madonna was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She deserves it.

Robert | 3/11/2008, 1:58 pm EST

Madonna doesn’t deserve to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. There are groups and singers that are better than that bitch could ever be. She sucks she has no class

sad | 3/11/2008, 1:53 pm EST

Madonna, good singer, but as she has gotten older, well it seems kind of funny, now that she is married and leads this so called “conservative life” or trying to be one, her own children are not allowed to watch TV, play video games, are kept from any type of tv, keeps them away from the so called “worldly things”. the woman that led so many other young teens astray with her liberal videos, wont let her own children be exposed to the same thing. hmmm. Its different now when she has her own children. Would she like her children to be watching something like her on the tube? It seems not!!!

Larry | 3/11/2008, 1:25 pm EST

Where is Alice Cooper and KISS? The rock and roll hall of fame is a joke until these two unbleavable acts are in.

lauren7 | 3/11/2008, 1:19 pm EST

It is absolutely offensive and absurd that anyone would disagree that madonna deserves this recognition. she is one of the very rare artists of any era to have actually played a significant role in changing and shaping the world of music and popular culture. one of the most inclusive, courageous, rebellious and successful artists of the last 3 decades, madonnna is absolutely a rock star and music icon that will be remembered for the impacts she has made over many years of challenging societal norms and pushing the envelop much further than any run-of-the-mill poser “rock band”. it’s sad that after so many years some narrow minded people still can’t accept that like it or not, madonna has made great contributions to rock and roll history in her unforgettable career.

Wallace Frederick | 3/11/2008, 12:33 pm EST

Someone stated earlier artists such as Steve Miller, Heart, Alice Cooper should have been inducted and I absolutely agree! This however has nothing to do with Madonna. As her music may not come to mind when someone speaks about “guitar” oriented Rock -N-Roll, she does exemplify the true spirit of Rock-N-Roll in her actions, her creative contributions and yes, even her music. Since the beginning of her career there have always been oposing people affected by her success, who speak out against her. Apparently she pushed their buttons. Her ability to move forward as a musician and artist successfully over the last three decades, and prove the oposing people wrong, may be one of Rock-N-Roll’s biggest “F#@* Y*@” to date. Bottom line, I enjoy the variety of artists that are included in the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame, as Rock-N-Roll is a state of mind, just as much as a powerful medium of self-expression! Cheers to you Madonna!

Memphis Queen | 3/11/2008, 12:32 pm EST

R u Serious? Madonna has made her place in history and still has fans young and old. She is a legend and represents for the 80’s era indeed. She is a performer, writer, producer, mother, wife, humanatarian. Need I say more. She so deserves this

Pat | 3/11/2008, 12:21 pm EST

Unfortunate that R&R is not still R&R. Pop is not R&R it is a different flavor all together. R&R is hardcore, not a wedding dress wearing stage humper! WTF is wrong with the hall of fame! Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jethro Tull and Deep Purple are the right stuff… I am very disappointed! A truely sad day…

Paul | 3/11/2008, 12:19 pm EST

How come CHER has not yet been inducted? Sonny & Cher started in the 60’s and had lots of hit records. She went solo and throughout the 70’s made her living doing television and pumped out hit records. The 80’s included motion picture’s, more hit records, sold out concerts and even an Oscar. Madonna has been around sinc ethe 80’s. Cher has been in the public eye since the 60’s. Where is CHER among this elite group?

Both quotes below are from the Hall’s Web site. Music evolves and changes just like everything else in the world. It is inevitable. Madonna and these other artists you consider controversial have adapted and continued to produce just that, controversial music that keeps you on your toes. Just because it is different doesn’t mean it should be excluded…

“the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is dedicated to exploring the past, present and future of the music and the cultural context from which it emerges.”

“Music gives us a microphone to speak to the world. And music has the power to bring generations, nationalities and people together. Now more than ever, it’s critical to study and understand how music is changing our world as well as reflecting it.”

..I can’t believe some people are outraged by Madonna’s induction in the RHF,when she has been an important element in reshaping music history, becoming one of the most influential music artist in History, not to mention the fact that she has to present date shown the world how it’s done withought signs of slowing down, give urself a break..she is Madonna!!

Madonna — NO!!!!
Yes to: YES, GENESIS, GRAND FUNK, DOOBIE BROTHERS

I will never set foot in the R&R Hall of Fame without Yes or Genesis

Chase | 3/10/2008, 5:52 pm EST

The R&R Hall of Fame has inducted lots of people whom you can’t really define as “rock”. It’s more to do with their contribution to “popular music”. But in terms of the Rock and Roll spirit, Madonna definitely deserves a place! She’s got more balls, more rebellious than a lot of male rockers.

Anonymous | 3/9/2008, 11:17 am EST

What a crock! Madonna being inducted into the ROCK and ROLL Hall of Fame is an insult to all true rock and roll performers as well as rock fans everywhere. Madonna never released a single song that could be even remotely classified as rock and roll. This is, simply put, a sham. To include Madonna, who never released a rock song, and exclude truly great rock artists like Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Heart, and Steve Miller is a travesty. There should be a way all persons could be able to protest this obvious scam created by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Joan Baez
Judy Collins
Chubby Checker
Harry Belafonte
Peter, Paul & Mary
The Kingston Trio
Jan and Dean
The Monkees

All major, charting musicians from the 1950s and 1960s should be inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame because they were all a part of the foundation of Rockand Roll.

Roy | 1/5/2008, 7:50 am EST

I believe that all the charting musicians from the 1950s and early 1960s should be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, no matter who they are or how good they were or how many hits they had. They should all be inducted just because they were a part of the foundation of Rock & Roll.

INDUCT NOW!!

The Big Bopper
Chubby Checker
Harry Belafonte
The Kingston Trio
Peter, Paul & Mary
Joan Baez
Judy Collins
Jan and Dean
The Monkees

Still a bit of a bummer that Warren Zevon never got his due. A shame that a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame never honored one of rock’s best songwriters.

Do we need to be honoring Madonna? Is there anything to be said anymore about her? Also she’s a pop singer.

Just listen to “The Indifference of Heaven”, “Desperadoes Under The Eaves”, “My Ride’s Here”, or “Looking For The Next Best Thing” and tell me he doesn’t deserve it.

The Ventures
The Dave Clark Five
Leonard Cohen

Happy for the Ventures, the greatest instrumental band ever, and for the DC5. Good to see Mellencamp and Cohen, a Canadian get inducted(when will Rush or the Guess Who be inducted?). Legendary Performers indeed. And Madonna sticks out like a sore thumb, but she is the most successful and one of the most influential female artist of all time and why shouldn’t she be inducted?

Next year expect to see the Eurythmics, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode on the nominations ballot.

Madonna rules | 12/14/2007, 12:58 am EST

Madonna is the most important woman, in the music industry, of the last 25 years. She is sooo underrated. The 80’s were Madonna, Bruce and Michael.

It’s about time Mellencamp made it. 12 great albums and countless great singles. A songwriter and social commentator for the common and trampled upon man. A great live act with one of the best backing bands ever. There is no more deserving artist than John Mellencamp, and I’m glad he’s in. I’m not shocked he’s a mere footnote in Rolling Stone’s story. They’ve been overlooking him for years.

And when is Jan Wenner going to have the induction seremony fr the hall in Cleveland He makew them pick up the tab for the museum. Can’t he be bothered to fly two staes over once a year?

ABOUT…FUCKIN’…TIME

That declaration is actually in reference to Madge & The Beasties. I proudly also have to say the same for Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. Two upstart & revolutionary producers who sculpted a sound which was/ still is the most remarkably valuable and worth while thing since John Wanamaker became a merchant:Philly soul. Teddy P., Patti LaBelle, Musiq, Jazzyfatnastees…
They were/still are real superheroes(past, present, & future)which made r&b extremely more immortal, whereas Gamble & Huff were real masterminds-the mark they made was strongly innovative.

Congratulations y’all!

Crash Alley | 12/13/2007, 10:28 am EST

Yuck!

She’s bony and muscular in all the wrong places.

If I wish to take a term like “rock and roll” literally, that’s my fuckin’ perogative!

If I think music recorded with all kinds of electronic enhancements is garbage, as opposed made by people who can actually play, that’s my perogative as well.

If that’s third grade thinking according to you, then I take that as a compliment!

Yes! | 12/13/2007, 9:53 am EST

Awesome news!! And as a preemptive note to all the “Madonna isn’t rock and roll” haters, the phrase isn’t meant to be taken literally, and that close-minded argument comes straight out of third grade.
