Kanye West, Amy Winehouse Lead Nominations for 50th Annual Grammy Awards

12/6/07, 12:28 pm EST

The Grammy nominations are in: Kanye West leads the pack with eight nods, and Amy Winehouse has six; the Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and T-Pain are all up for five awards. Among the surprises: Bruce Springsteen scored four nominations, but isn’t up for the major album and song honors, Mark Ronson grabbed a nom for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical (where he’ll face off against Timbaland) and New Orleans-based singer Ledisi — a jazz/R&B vocalist so unknown that announcer Dave Grohl didn’t know how to pronouce her name — will compete in the Best New Artist category.

“I’m honored to have my music recognized with these nominations,” Winehouse tells Usmagazine.com exclusively. “This is a true validation from people I respect and admire.” UGK received a nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group just days after the death of Pimp C; the second half of the duo, Bun B, says, “While this nomination is bittersweet to say the least, I am thankful for the acknowledgment, and as this was a lifelong dream for Chad, it warms my heart to know that he has finally gotten the recognition from the powers that be that his talent, passion and relentless drive for music so rightfully deserved.” (To check out our instant predications for who will — and who should win — the top thirteen categories, click here.)

Fergie, Grohl and Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters, Akon, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Herbie Hancock, Taylor Swift, George Lopez, Vince Gill and Jimmy Jam announced the major nominations today in Los Angeles; these awards will mark the 50th Annual Grammys, and will take place at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on February 10th and air on CBS.

Ummm… i must be getting old.

What’s the difference between the album of the year and record of the year?

And Foo Fighters? I LOVE them, but I don’t hear it. I’ve listened to this record multiple times and its just a dud. Produced to perfection but the songs, minus the single (Pretender) are nice B-sides at best.

Brett | 12/6/2007, 12:49 pm EST

BULLSHIT
“Magic” is the best of the year, no contest.
Fuck the Grammys with something spikey.

Curtis | 12/6/2007, 1:08 pm EST

How is Daughtry up for Rock album of the year and the Killers’ Sam’s Town isn’t? Absolute garbage. The grammy’s always snub them and The Strokes

Nathan | 12/6/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Album of the year; Vince Gill, Herbie Hancock and Foo Fighters? wow, and not a good wow.

jake | 12/6/2007, 1:32 pm EST

Ok, I agree with the nod to Dierks Bentley, but if you are going back to 2006, why isn’t Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor up for rap album of the year? He got nominated in a different category for a song from that album, and the album is way better than TI vs TIP and Kingdom Come.

matt | 12/6/2007, 1:34 pm EST

Magic is the best album of the year. Also, why no love for The White Stripes?

Hank Chinaski | 12/6/2007, 1:50 pm EST

Winehouse: What are you doing in the bathroom, Hank, you asshole, playing with yourself?

Hank: You god damned whore! What do you know about anything? Sitting on your dead ass sucking at the vino!

(Hank gets dressed, with a cigarette dangling)

Winehouse: Hey where the hell are you going?

Hank: I’m going to the fuckin’ bar!

Winehouse: Not without me!
Not without me, buster!

We sat there together on our stools before the long mirror and tell the bartender, “vodka 7.”

Life couldn’t get any better . . .

Dennis A. | 12/6/2007, 1:55 pm EST

hahahahaa…. Hank, that was amazing. Thank you.

JR | 12/6/2007, 2:02 pm EST

“The Boss” isn’t up for the big one because the grammy people are smart and said wow, bruce sucks big cock.

we can’t have him win the big one

i want to see kanye or foos win.

amy winehouse….eh

maybe

WHERE IS MY QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE NODS?

Beelay | 12/6/2007, 2:04 pm EST

I’m pulling for Wino.

She may be a complete wreck, but Back to Black is a phenomenal album.

Also, good on ya, Feist!! Good to see a fellow Bishop Carroll High School alumni getting a Grammy nod.

Where’s Spoon??

JAMHEAD | 12/6/2007, 2:14 pm EST

FUCK THE GRAMMY’S THE JAMMY’S ARE MO BETTA! TAKE A LITTLE FUNK, SOME BLUES, JAZZ, AND BLUEGRASS ( A TINY BIT OF GREEN GRASS!) AND THROW IN SOME STRETCHED OUT IMPROV WITH HINTS OF COUNTRY, TRANCE AND TRIP HOP AND VOILA! REAL MUSIC WITH REAL CHARACTER.

Hank Chinaski | 12/6/2007, 2:24 pm EST

re:Dennis A. | 12/6/2007, 1:55 pm EST

“hahahahaa…. Hank, that was amazing. Thank you.”

Don’t fall in love with me, Buddy!

I’m also called “Supersonic”!!!

DeadHorse | 12/6/2007, 2:32 pm EST

Man, these nominees are freakin’ terrible. Album of the year? Where’s Springsteen’s “Magic”? Wilco’s “Sky Blue Sky”? How in the hell did ‘Sky Blue Sky’ end up in ‘best rock album’ category? There were far more great albums than these. People need to get their head out of Dave Grohl’s A** and realize that the Foo Fighters, while talented, are not what they used to be. They are sooooo 2003.

Dallasfan | 12/6/2007, 2:34 pm EST

album of the year is for the entire album. Record of the year is for a single.

Dallasfan | 12/6/2007, 2:35 pm EST

Queens of the stone age are nominated in best hard rock performance.

Dennis A. | 12/6/2007, 2:45 pm EST

yeah i figured.. youre still a ****. but that was hilarious.

ASB | 12/6/2007, 2:53 pm EST

Daughtry over QOTSA for best rock album…wow…way to keep in touch, grammy people by nominating the most plastic produced mass market industry crap instead of actually caring about the music. Who needs good records when youve got the the marketing campaign?

THX-1138 | 12/6/2007, 3:28 pm EST

Here’s a thought from one of the last true visionaries still working in music today:

06 December 2007: A SUGGESTION:
While the music industry is doing everything they possibly can to go out of business, can we all make sure to rid ourselves of the Grammys, too? Out of touch old men jacking each other off.
ENOUGH!

Have a nice day.

- Trent Reznor

Clara D. | 12/6/2007, 4:24 pm EST

Whether you like her or not Winehouse has made the best album of the year – every song on that record already sounds like a classic.

But I guess there is a lot of good will towards Kanye at the moment so…

Molly | 12/6/2007, 4:24 pm EST

WTF? Daughtry is up for best rock album? The music industry really has failed…

r from r | 12/6/2007, 4:49 pm EST

Yeah, whoever came up with these nominations has a great sense of humor…

Tom | 12/6/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Daughtry fucking sucks

Saad | 12/6/2007, 5:01 pm EST

the grammy’s fuck up every year so don’t get your panties up in a bunch over em, they don’t even matter anymore. Yes the White Stripes Icky Thump should be there. Where is the Smashing Pumpkin’s Zeitgeist? TI’s and Jay-Z’s albums shouldn’t even be up there. And Kanye may win a best album of the year award for an album that isn’t as good as either of his past two. Whatevs….

Hank Chinaski | 12/6/2007, 5:32 pm EST

Dennis A. | 12/6/2007, 2:45 pm EST

“yeah i figured.. youre still a ****. but that was hilarious.”

If you liked that, you’d love Charles Bukowski. That’s what inspired it. Check him out!

On Winehouse, I hope she wins every grammy she’s nominated for.
What’s the big deal if she’s a drunk. She’s the female Keith Richards!!!

CM | 12/6/2007, 5:40 pm EST

Where are The Killers?? Sam’s Town is a great album and the track Read My Mind is fantastic. The lists with the exception of U2, The White Stripes and Bruce Springsteen totally sucks.

cAlVin | 12/6/2007, 5:45 pm EST

what country are you from? The Grammys are the Oscars of the music industry!

Dana Doll | 12/6/2007, 5:55 pm EST

“what country are you from? The Grammys are the Oscars of the music industry!”

What I can tell you that I am NOT from the most emission-polluting country in the world.

s | 12/6/2007, 6:18 pm EST

these noms are a joke.
Daughtry for best “rock” album puh-lease.
At least they recognized Winehouse. Think about it though if she didn’t garner up attention with her drunkeness, or her ode to drunkenness called “Rehab” would she even be recognized? and Where’s “Era Vulgaris in this mess of mainstream tripe???? FUCK Grammys. there is nothing really here besides Winehouse that really should be nominated and the grammys are too dumb to even recognize WHY “Back to Black” SHOULD be nominated.

Johnny Kickass | 12/6/2007, 6:33 pm EST

Foo Fighters are soooo overrated.

Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins made better albums then 90% of the mediocrity listed here.

Johnny Kickass | 12/6/2007, 6:35 pm EST

That’s not a compliment!

The only thing worse then the Grammies are the Oscars.

Supersonic | 12/6/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Ummm . . . Jethro Tull isn’t up for any awards this year, right?

Fuck Denver | 12/6/2007, 7:08 pm EST

Alright Lucinda!!!

Anonymous | 12/6/2007, 7:11 pm EST

Why the HELL is Daughtry up there?

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?!?

There are so many good records that have been overlooked, but at LEAST they did not put High School Musical up there…if that happened…no…it can’t happen…

can it?

sidestage | 12/6/2007, 7:30 pm EST

What PLANET are you from?

GrammyMaster | 12/6/2007, 7:31 pm EST

I can’t believe Jethro Tull isn’t on this list!
The Grammys know what is going on, baby. Who knew U2 even released two songs this year?
They should rename this show:
“Shittiest music from acts we know plus some random boy and girl bands”

JD | 12/6/2007, 11:01 pm EST

I predict Amy Wino will win 5 out of 6 grammies, with Kanye getting the Album of the Year grammy. Like it or not, he’s the sentimental favourite.

As usual there are many surprises and once again, a little too much of JT.

“What PLANET are you from?”

Like it or not, it’s music’s highest honor. Just like the Oscars. But not every year is there much to choose from for the Grammys or the Oscars, so that makes them even more alike, bonehead!

Dana Doll | 12/6/2007, 11:23 pm EST

“Eddie Vedder’s up for a Grammy?

What category, “Jerkoff Of The Year”?”

LOL!!! I couldn’t agree more!

n | 12/7/2007, 12:39 am EST

RADIOHEAD? ineligible? ah, next year. even though they don’t care and wouldn’t be nominated even if they did. they’re too damn good.

Yea NINE INCH NAILS should at least be in one catorgorie, Im guessing Year Zero was to deep for the Emmy’s. Personally i hate anyone telling me what is the best of anything. What does the Emmy’s know, im sure its just a bunch of old guys in uniforms who think they know about music. Hell Metallica who hasn’t releashed an album in years gets a nod but MEGADETH who just releashed an amazing album gets nothing?? Just some clueless guys in uniforms!!

bluesman | 12/7/2007, 5:20 pm EST

For example…. Christina Aguilara beat out Susan Tedecshi for a Grammy in 2000 for best new female vocalist or something like that, Go to google and check out any one of Susan Tedeschi’s Songs ,hell the worst one you can find and it’s still better than anything Crustina has ever put out!

The grammys are the music industrie’s equivalent of a circle jerk and Timberlake is the pivot man!!!

Pumpkin | 12/8/2007, 1:14 am EST

It’s just sad. I wish someone would publish all the names of the people who made these choices. Why did they get to choose? And why didn’t they ask me my opinion? Seriously, I’d like to know who they are.

I think the Album Black Holes and Revelations by Muse should get a nod. Fantastic album.

Ben | 1/5/2008, 3:37 pm EST

GEEZ! What the hell is the music industry coming to? They`re missing all the GOOD artists and albums. The fact that Daughtry even got nom, inated for best rock album is downright bullshit. I can`t believe it beat out QOTSA`s Era Vulgaris, or The Killers` Sam`s Town, or Spoon`s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga!! AND WHAT ABOUT MUSE?!?!? All the industry cares about now is commericalism, not quality of music at all. At least QOTSA, the White Stripes and Arcade Fire got a nod. Next year, use your goddamn brains, and nominate Radiohead, and all other good albums coming out next year…..

THE CONCERNED ONE | 1/9/2008, 8:15 am EST

The grammy nominations are a complete joke, i have bought kanye west ’s album just average does not even deserve 8 nominations. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was far much superior than this i mean her intellectual lyrics, each and every song had a different message, beats and theme. She is a prolefic rapper and has a unigue voice and very versatile with her melodies.

As for Amy Winehouse she has a great voice and her album is good but does not sound original as all the songs sound the same on the album but i would not mind if she wins because she is far better than beyonce, fergie, rihanna and justine timberlake combined. I am still wondering why fergie, rihanna, JT, neyo, jay z, TI, Fat Joe, Lil Wayne, Shop Boys, Keisha Cole and the rest of the mediocre artists were nominated. As for Hip Hop and RnB Lauryn hill, Pras and Wyclef need to sort out their shit and get back into the studio period. The music indudtry cannot embarass itself like this.

It's the Music Stupid! | 2/10/2008, 1:48 am EST

Come on, “Music Jounalists” tell us exactly who the idiots are who voted for these forgettable “Artists.” You must know who the voters are. I’m just betting that most of them are over the age of 60. They vote like they’re that old, anyway. I’m betting that some of YOU guys voted for this junk, too. So, do RS staffers get to vote for Grammy nominees? Come on, it’s time to come clean! For a “Free Press” to have a voice in who wins an award which almost certainly increases sales dramatically, seems like a conflict of interest. Do these record companies advertise with you? How can you be objective?

I’ve always thought it was interesting that charts like Billboard that calculate their standings based on “sales and air play” could be accurate when, apparently, during the 80’s and 90’s, a lot of songs were only played to begin with, because promoters paid for the air time outright. So, were the paid-for plays deleted from the “Air Play” stats before the charts were calculated? Somehow I seriously doubt it. It’s time for someone to do some SERIOUS music journalism, and clear up all these cloudy issues. Unless you guys are bought and paid for by your advertisers.

I think the Grammys are for sale, too, judging from the quality of the nominees. Fortunately, really good music can never be killed, no matter how much clueless record companies, and music-press publishers with dismal taste in music, try to do it in through sheer lack of discernment or even caring. People will always respond to music that is uncalculated and real. Which is why you guys have so many nasty comments posted every another batch of nominees is announced. And why Grammy audiences are at such a low. Cookie-cutter record company products, who only have some new gimmick to differentiate themselves from the rest of the herd, will never make a lasting impact with most people. Is most of this stuff good enough that people will still be listening to it in 20 years? What about 50 years? And, will Grammy voters ever wise up?

charliemapleton aka CM Funk | 2/10/2008, 4:47 am EST

Amy, Amy, Amy-she’s strictly the sole candidate for Album Of The Year. Back To Black was no doubt an undeniably flawless diamond in the rough in jazz, soul, and overall indie rock. Winehouse has proved she’s almost a cut above legendary British songstresses like Dusty Springfield and Lisa Stansfield-you can’t knock that. As for my other picks…

Best RnB Album
Musiq Soulchild
Luvandmusiq

Best Contemporary RnB Album
Keyshia *MAD SENSUAL* Cole
