What It Is: A high resolution, super slim and portable camcorder for about $150.
Who It’s For: Anybody who’s intimidated by the many buttons and options on traditional video cameras or who can’t be bothered with transferring video to a PC via a dedicated wire. Also perfect for those who forget to bring the camcorder and want to get high-quality movies right away, because the Flip Ultra is available at most national chain stores.
Why It’s Worthy: Since it requires the pressing of only one central button, shooting on this thing is about as easy as it gets. Video quality is surprisingly crisp and colorful, whether you’re plugging the device directly into a TV (via the included A/V cables), publishing it onto a DVD (which you’ll need to do at your local Target, Best Buy or other retailer) or watching it online (via one-click publishing to video sharing sites like Grouper and YouTube). But the single coolest and most user-friendly feature is the built-in USB connector, which folds out from the side of the camera and plugs into any PC, auto-loading software that lets you edit, create slide shows and video clips set to your favorite music, grab still images, e-mail video greeting cards or publish online (no installation necessary).
Our Only Complaint: The entry-level model only holds about thirty minutes of video — enough for one night’s party, but not sufficient for a whole vacation.
Price/Where to Get It: $150 (thirty-minute model); $180 (sixty-minute model).
