U2 Talk New “Trance”-Infused Album, Radiohead Halt Freebies December 10th, Pimp C Update

12/5/07, 2:37 pm EST

  • People will “feel the difference” when they hear the new U2 album, Bono tells The Independent. The album will find the Irish rockers taking on trance, metal and Moroccan influences. “Normally when you play a U2 tune, it clears the dance floor. And that may not be true of this. There’s some trance influences,” says Bono, forgetting his band’s own Pop album. “It’s not like anything we’ve ever done before, and we don’t think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either.” According to Bono, guitarist The Edge has “real molten metal” coming from his guitar, and that the band has recorded enough material to fit two CDs.
  • On December 10th, Radiohead will close down InRainbows.com, thus preventing latecomers from downloading their new album for free and/or pay-whatever-you-want. The $80 discbox will still be on sale at merchandiser w.a.s.t.e., but only while supplies last. The physical CD hits stores on December 31st in the UK and January 1st in the States.
  • According to authorities, rapper Pimp C, who was found dead yesterday in his L.A. hotel room, may have died of natural causes. Meanwhile, Lil Flip has recorded the first of what likely will be many of Pimp C tribute tracks.
  • The Police drummer Stewart Copeland has apologized to Chilean president Michelle Bachelet after insinuating that she was less attractive than Argentina’s female president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. Copeland also invited Bachelet to the Police’s concert in Santiago.
  • MySpace, looking to stay fresh with Facebook on its tail, has created a new MTV’s Unplugged-like series where they post interviews and performances with artists on their site. First up: James Blunt.

“we don’t think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either…”
Right Bono…arrogant prick…

jesse | 12/5/2007, 4:27 pm EST

haha how is he an arrogant prick? i’m not a huge U2 fan, but honestly, they created a genre back in the 80’s that no one else had sounded like before, and they did it again in the 90’s. it always seems that when there is a band at the top, people want them to fail, and when they don’t it makes them even more angry. U2 write music that tons of people love, and others dont. Its the same for every band, its just that they happen to be the biggest band.

Bono can’t be all bad, he digs Henry Chinaski!

Jughead | 12/5/2007, 4:49 pm EST

All right! We’re gonna hear some metal in U2’s new album. We’re gonna be head banging, stage diving and moshing to U2! Kick ass! Watch out Metallica… U2 is out metal you guys ! yeah right!! LOL.

Johnny Kickass | 12/5/2007, 5:02 pm EST

‘they created a genre back in the 80’s that no one else had sounded like before, and they did it again in the 90’s’

…That’s complete nonsense. Exactly what genre did they create?
I admit they’re talented, but they’re not the least bit original.

Joe | 12/5/2007, 5:11 pm EST

Anonymous prefers his/her/its rock stars to say things like “Yes, we are doing the same shit that everyone else is putting out right now because we know you will buy it.” Personally, I anticpate every U2 release because of precisely what Bono talks about, the sense that something will be done that hasn’t been done before. Bono may be Edge’s and U2’s best publicist, but I’ll be damned if I go and see a heavyweight fight where the champ didn’t think he was the greatest. Long live U2.

dirtylemons | 12/5/2007, 5:13 pm EST

I’m always eager to hear the latest from U2, and they’ve even gone so far as to say they don’t ‘think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either.”
I love it when bands talk so highly of their new material…it also helps when the band is U2.

Bukowski | 12/5/2007, 5:51 pm EST

have to agree with Kickass! Edge has completely ripped off Andy Summers. sorry.

Kyle Brooklyn | 12/5/2007, 5:58 pm EST

They may have influences from other artists but I wouldn’t say U2 aren’t the least bit original. There are actually WAY more U2 rip-off bands. It’s also kinda true that around the Achtung Baby period, no one sounded like that before

The Houston Curse has struck again. S.U.C. and all affiliates keep mysteriously dying. Sad day for Southern Rap fo sho. Flip ain’t waste no time making a tribute. RIP to Chad Butler. I grew up bangin Screw and Ridin Dirty. Damn ya’ll

Dan | 12/5/2007, 6:32 pm EST

Back in `97, Bono went on record as saying, that the song Mofo, from the soon to be released Pop CD, was “the best rock song” he ever heard. Bono is no different than a used car salesman, constantly hyping his product, just like everybody else.

It’s kinda lame to bitch about a great band like U2 at a time like this. I mean, c’mon, Chris Brown and Rihanna are the biggest-selling “artists” out now. New U2 will be a fucking breath of fresh air compared to that garbage…

Heather | 12/5/2007, 7:23 pm EST

“The Police drummer Stewart Copeland has apologized to Chilean president Michelle Bachelet after insinuating that she was less attractive than Argentina’s female president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. Copeland also invited Bachelet to the Police’s concert in Santiago”

What? Apologize? What for? You can’t have an opinion about a woman’s appearance without firebombing in the street? It’s almost as stupid as putting someone in jail for naming a teddy bear!

Joe | 12/5/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Hey Dan, “MOFO” kicks ass. Would you not hype something you created? Like your child, for example? Or would you be modest about it? Whatever.

Anonymous | 12/6/2007, 9:10 am EST

never said anything about liking any band who says “Yes, we are doing the same shit that everyone else is putting out right now because we know you will buy it.”…but now that you mention it, that does sound a lot like u2…

It sounds to me like you’re saying becaause the pop music scene so bad, we shouldn’t pick on U2 because at least they suck less than everyone else.

Joe | 12/6/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Yeah, I know you didn’t say those words exactly. Got me there. But if you call someone arrogant because they believe they are making something special, that’s just a little jaded. I personally have respect for anyone that can get on stage and perform songs. It’s pretty fucking hard. God forbid they get excited about what they created. You win. Bono’s an arrogant prick. Keep crankin out your arrogant prick music, Bono.

Phil | 12/6/2007, 1:39 pm EST

you can’t put many bands in the same catagory as U2. They have a HUGE following since the mid 80s, Every album they put out is quality, even 25-30 years into their career (compare that to Stones’ Dirty Work) or some of the other bands i see people mentioning. get over your jealousy.

Hank Chinaski | 12/6/2007, 2:05 pm EST

“get over your jealousy.”

Why do people constantly say stupid meaningless shit like this???

U2 invented themselves, with a unique signature style of their own.

I think that the commentor who calls himself/herself Chinaski is stuck in the highschool mentality. U2’s bandmembers, collectively, have their own unique edge.

Is that an attack against U2 or is it a personal attack against other commentors? How immature.

Dennis | 12/9/2007, 5:44 pm EST

You only think he’s arrogant because everything the man says is magnified. So what, he’s got some ego. Quit whining and grow your own set of balls.

U2 are a phenomenon, and they made it w/a work ethic and tenacity that’s unheard of in today’s music environment.

yet another useless petty reaction.
