New Music Tuesdays: Ghostface Killah, The Libertines

12/4/07, 3:11 pm EST

Rolling Stone’s Christian Hoard says Ghostface Killah’s The Big Doe Rehab is another stellar album from the Wu-Tang MC, though it doesn’t quite measure up to last year’s Fishscale and lacks some of that album’s colorful drug-slinging tales. The Libertines’ new best-of comp pulls together songs from the short-lived band’s first two albums and an EP — enough for new fans to get a taste of Pete Doherty and Carl Barat’s fiesty band, but not enough to justify doling out your hard-earned cash. What’s the point of mentioning an album that I’m a “tool” for buying? Also, what exactly would you call a person that works for a magazine that promotes popular trends and corporate sponsorship, over raw undiscovered talent?

um... | 12/4/2007, 9:06 pm EST

well said sam.

If I’m a tool for liking the Libertines, then you Rolling Stone are the biggest tools of all. It was you I learned about them from and, like Sam said, you are promoting this album by picking it for your feature. not sure how much sense that makes.

Glad I don’t pay for your garbage anymore.

fuck that | 12/4/2007, 9:09 pm EST

Rolling Stone, why do you not review Ghostaface’s until the last paragraph of the review. At first I though you were reviewing 8 diagrams instead.

Fire that guy, his reviews are consistently horrible.

what the reviewer said | 12/4/2007, 9:09 pm EST

was that if you buy this rip-off “best-of” you are a tool, because it has NO new songs on it. he does NOT slag off the libertines or their fans. good listening, bros.

um...yeah. | 12/4/2007, 9:16 pm EST

well of course if you already own the songs douche…but what’s wrong with somebody new to the material buying this album…better than buying only 3 or 4 songs off iTunes.

It’s not like they’re going to get back together or anything.

Fact is, if Rolling Stone had a problem with the album then IGNORE it. There are plently of other artists who could use a corporate backing like RS.

which album are you reviewing ghos or wu? get lost. agreed.

off topic | 12/5/2007, 2:33 pm EST

this comment is off topic only because Rolling Stone gives no other platform to comment about their Led Zeppelin feature.

Fuck off Rolling Stone. You guys criticized the band insanely when they came out. Fuck off for jumping on the bandwagon thirty years later. I hate you guys…

Joey | 12/5/2007, 6:05 pm EST

The Libertines were the closest we ever came to having The Beatles again. the chemistry, enthusiasm, and songwriting skills of Barat and Doherty were on scale with Lennon and MCCartney. It wasn’t like the previous albums and eps were easy to come buy. On a good day, you might find a marker for the band in an empty bin at best buy. So, if repackaging the material is a way to get their music out to more people, so be it. And damn, The beatles are the kings of repackaging the same songs over and over again.

“Off topic”, you don’t want to make us angry!!! Believe me you don’t want to see THE MONSTER.

yo dexter! Even though I doubt you are actually affiliated in any way with this “magazine,” for the purposes of ranting I will act as though you are an employee of the cororate machine known as Rolling Stone.

This publication declined to the point I didn’t want my subscription anymore. I don’t mean I didn’t renew my subscription…I mean I got so pissed off at receiving issues with bands like Fall Out Boy on the cover a week after Pink Floyd is on the cover.
I’d rather throw my half done subscription away (which I did) that get pissed off every two weeks when my issue came in the mail.

Now, when I chose, I go to the website to get the info I ignorantly previsouly paid for. Most of the time I find the reviews have not been updated, the blog is info I read on Pitchfork the day before, and the politics read as close-minded, hatedful rhetoric filled with misinformation and downright lies.

So yeah Dexter, bring on The Monster…

Rolling Stone = Facism

censorship Rolling Stone? whatever happened to freedom of speech.

ganJoe | 12/10/2007, 6:04 pm EST

Who the hell are the Libertines first of all, seems ridiculous to call some indie posers beatle-esque, screw that! Also, WU TANG is back!!! Make room for the real MCs, screw Hurricane Chris and all those fake ringtone rappers, the Wu is coming through to rescue hip-hop from all the simple lyrics and R&B collabs.

wtf? | 12/12/2007, 11:57 am EST

wtf?

How is rolling stone going to combine the ghostface and wu review? I thought laat week that it was a mistake, but now I see both albums have THE EXACT SAME REVIEW. Rolling stone gets worse every week. STOP BEING LAZY!!!
