According to Baseless Evidence, Led Zeppelin and Metallica to Headline Bonnaroo

12/3/07, 10:54 am EST

Led Zeppelin tour leaks keep coming from the strangest of sources. First, it was the Cult’s Ian Astbury blurting out what could be the biggest secret in rock as he announced his band would open for the still-unannounced and unconfirmed Zeppelin reunion tour. Now, “an anonymous reader” reportedly told the Lefsetz Letter writer Bob Lefsetz, “Zeppelin just confirmed for Bonnaroo. They can’t officially announce until after the London gig so pass it on! Also Metallica is confirmed on the bill too!” Zeppelin, the stars of Rolling Stone’s current issue, have not announced any dates outside of their December 10th reunion concert at London’s O2 Arena. Both rock bands make sense though for the ‘Roo: Led Zeppelin could single-handedly draw a Woodstock-sized audience to rural Tennessee even without a hundred other bands on the bill, plus the festival headlined the reunited Police last June. Metallica would continue Bonnaroo’s trend of putting hard acts on the marquee, as the festival experimented with Tool among its headliners in 2007. But can we really believe “an anonymous reader” of The Lefsetz Letter? (Apparently not: the band’s management has since denied the report). We barely believe our own “anonymous readers.” Just two weeks ago, a fake Coachella flyer was making the rounds claiming that Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine and an unretired-from-the-stage David Bowie were headlining the 2008 Indio, CA, festival. But with the ever-increasing number of festivals being held in the summer, Led Zeppelin would seem like a major coup for the hippie heaven Bonnaroo … that is, unless, they can orchestrate a Phish reunion.

If Metallica plays Bonnaroo then the hippies lost.

Let’s hope they come to their senses; Tool was bad enough.

You’re right Mr Roboto, but can anyone lose with Zeppeling on the What Stage? …No. We’ll just all have to meet at the other end of camping grounds (as far from Metallica as possible) and roll one up.

I agree, if Metallica plays Bonnaroo it will be a travesty for everyone except metal fans.

Tool kicks ass

Please Lord let it be true.

Please dear lord let them stay retired. Pagey has sullied the good Zep name by getting involved with David Coverversion, the Firm, whatever, only Plant and Jones have managed to move on gracefully in the Rock World. Keep moving boys and don’t go back to what once was. The music says it all. Hell, just put up a massive screen and play the “Song Remains the Same” for the festival. Perhaps some of the bands on the bill will go home and actually learn how to write songs and play their instruments and create some drama. The old bands are like aging prize fighters who cannot leave the ring because the younger pugilists cannot knock them out.
But, don’t worry, if they tour my ass will be front and center.

Hail Mary, many metal fans don’t like metallica either. Metallica doesn’t seem to have the mettle to metal up anymore. It’s seems we’re all stuck with just the lica.

It’s true. Mindblowing, but true.

FaceMelter | 12/4/2007, 4:22 pm EST

When was the last time Bonnaroo was “hippie heaven”? I’ve been the last few years and seen nothing but face-melting rock. The jam bands are dying out like the dinos, my friends.

tool blows.

Not the biggest Metallica fan, but I think Zeppelin and Metallica would make a nice juxtaposition for Bonnaroo. On a side note, it is true that Tool kind of changed the clientel last year. But I think it’s really funny that people didnt want them there, saying their music is “too heavy”, etc. Tool is NOTHING like Metallica. Tool’s music was written on acid, and that’s what it’s meant for, it’s prog/ psychedelic rock, not metal. You would think people that do psychedelic drugs would appreciate music like that.

I am both a Metallica fan and a Led Zeppelin fan. I believe, though that Bonnaroo is not the place for their music. Metallica is better suited for Ozzfest and Led Zeppelin is better suited for their own reunion tour. Keep metal out of Bonnaroo.

They are the two best rock bands in the world!! It’s going to be amazing! And for the record, there are no such things as hippies anymore. (young ones, at least)

BZ40 | 1/6/2008, 5:11 pm EST

Please God let them play at Bonnaroo. It would be the greatest concert I and everybody in my generation (gen y) have ever seen. Yes, there is still musical talent on this earth hiding under a rock waiting to return to us, but nothing like Zeppelin has made its way onto the radio since the 70’s. Its time to rise up together and stop all the wrong that is on the radio these days. BONNAROO PEOPLE YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! Do it for those of us who still listen to the words of songs and dont consider the definition of a song to be a sick beat with some clip-art lyrics!!!!! If anything you are gona see the show too, so book them and the 80,000+ of us can get the Led out once and for all!!! LONG LIVE THE ROO!!!!!!!

metallica is awesome, and so is zep. if you think that its a travesty top have them there then dont go because it will be more fun for the rest of us when you arent taking up space

toolfreak | 3/18/2009, 2:07 am EST

Only an epistemically challenged moron would think that Metallica is better than or even in the same league with TOOL. I can’t even believe that people like this actually exist on this planet.
———————- ————
Now, I know that the argument that TOOL is not a Metal band can be efficaciously contended iseethroughyou but I would suggest TOOL plays Metal the way it should be played…employing ruminating circumspection to accomplish what no one else can. This is why TOOL is so phenomenal and ground-breaking but those cursed with a much more simple musical persuasion are unable to grasp this. You don’t have to like TOOL to appreciate how talented they are.
Led Zeppelin was phenomenal and ground-breaking in there day and hope to see a reunion anywhere. I am not a big fan of Zeppelin but I can see that they had extraordinary talent and I would be happier to see them headline with TOOL instead of Metallica.
