Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers To Play Super Bowl Halftime Show

12/2/07, 5:23 pm EST

After months of rumors it would be the Eagles or Bruce Springsteen, the NFL announced today that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers will play the halftime show at the Super Bowl this February 3rd in Phoenix. The booking of Petty continues the NFL’s bent for classic rock greats since Janet Jackson’s nipple bust out at the 2004 show: Recent bills have included Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and Prince. A set-closing “American Girl” is pretty much a gimme, but what else do you think he’ll play? (”Even the Losers” could be a propos.)

After the jump, read this handy complete history of Super Bowl halftime gigs, courtesy of the NFL:

4. Mary Jane’s Last Dance
5. American Girl

It was announced today that Tom Petty can’t play any drug related songs. I guess we can all say that he won’t play “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” because Mary Jane is another for pot. (Just for those who don’t know) And I guess free falling won’t be played either. Its pretty sad how the superbowl is so desperate to revive their name after Justin and Janet’s performances. I wish they would get some new bands to play the half-time show just to hear new people.

Jammin’ Me
You Wreck Me
Handle with Care (TP&TH do a great version)
Changed the Locks (my favourite)
Don’t Come Around Here No More

Mary Jane’s Last Dance is a given.

I’m personally praying for Mary Jane’s Last Dance, Learning To Fly, Here Comes My Girl and Even the Losers

Casey | 1/11/2008, 1:50 pm EST

I know he won’t but I’d love it if he played Walls or Last DJ

Let’s assume 5 songs:

1. Runnin’ Down a Dream
2. I Won’t Back Down
3. Mary Jane’s Last Dance
4. Free Fallin’
5. American Girl

I pick this list for several reasons. Petty needs to open with a bang, and ‘Runnin Down a Dream’ is a perfect anthem for an event such as the Super Bowl. ‘I Won’t Back Down’ creates a good theme as well and should follow ‘Runnin Down a Dream’ to display the diversity of Petty’s catalog. Mary Jane’s Last Dance is a must as is Free Fallin’. Nuff Said. I think however, he should close the show by panning back to his roots, the first hit: ‘American Girl’. Besides, the ending of this song gives such a rush to any listener. Really does have a great hook.

Sure I would love to hear Petty play his countless other hits.. and if you google Petty’s usual setlist, you’ll be wowed when u begin to rediscover all the unrivaled work he’s produced over the years. However, I think these 5 hits are perfect for the 2008 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Hey Schram,
About “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”
Asked if the song was about drugs, Heartbreaker guitarist Mike Campbell said, “My take on it is it can be whatever you want it to be. A lot of people think it’s a drug reference, and if that’s what you want to think, it very well could be, but it could also just be a goodbye love song.”

what happened to van halen. that would be the best sperbowl ever purely just for the halftime show. personally i think van halen wouldve been much better

KrynLauren | 1/20/2008, 10:39 pm EST

My vote is for “Free Fallin” 5 consecutive times. Why not?

DEVILDOG | 1/22/2008, 8:01 am EST

Yea i think that he will be an awsome half time show is better than these new bands who have only been around for two or three years

Anonymous | 1/30/2008, 7:28 pm EST

The perfect choice
1. You don’t know how it feels
2. Wildflowers
3. Mary Janes last dance
4. Free Fallin
5. You come through

Mal | 2/2/2008, 11:09 pm EST

It’s a wonder that they can get all these older gentleman to play for Superbowl halftime year after year, but I say keep ‘em coming.
Tom Petty’s great, but I’ll sh*t my pants the year David Bowie is up there.

Leon Ellis | 2/3/2008, 10:13 am EST

Probably not enough time for five tunes- unless they do a medley thing….that’s what I’m callin for….

Stevo | 2/3/2008, 10:19 am EST

I think that since he only has about 12 minutes a span of three songs would be good… my personal favorites are
Mary Jane’s Last Dance
Refugee
Running Down A dream
also, doesn’t it seem like refugee is one of those totally underplayed songs??

Stevo | 2/3/2008, 10:21 am EST

yah i guess a medley would work too…

Matty T | 2/3/2008, 9:33 pm EST

Halftime show was sick…Petty and the Heartbreakers stole the show…and you can bet that anyone who didn’t know who Tom Petty was before 2nite sure as hell knows ‘the living legend’ now.
