Weekend Rock List: Best Songs Over Seven Minutes Long

11/30/07, 5:17 pm EST

In the days of strict Top 40 radio playlists and the iPod’s shuffle, people often forget about the art of the longer-than-average song. This week, we dedicate our rock list to those tracks that last longer than seven minutes. Hit us back with your favorite tunes that break the 6:59 barrier and next week we’ll reveal our full list. Until then, here are decades-spanning favorites to help you out while you go searching for a stopwatch.

P.S. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is only 5:55 long, so don’t hound us with “Where’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’?”

Television – “Marquee Moon”
The Velvet Underground – “Sister Ray”
LCD Soundsystem – “All My Friends”
Jane’s Addiction – “Three Days”
Led Zeppelin – “Stairway to Heaven”

“haven’t you classic rock geeks lost faith by now? just because it was recorded in the 60s or 70s doesn’t mean its…..fuck it. nevermind.”

Good call “duchamp.” I am rather sick of this as well.
There is just as much great music now-a-days as there were any time. Difference is we have the internet shoving the millions of BAD ones at us at light speed, and MTV only playing the videos of said shit artists. Back then, you only heard of the good ones, cuz they got the attention. Does that make them the end all of good music? Hardly.

You just have to look for it yourself these days. It’s lazy and unoriginal to keep pushing the same has beens for 40 years. Move on.

As for the long songs, I already said my picks, but I’m agreeing with the Oasis mentions I’ve seen. Great long ones there.

This list is a joke. Close to the Edge by Yes is the best song of all time, and all three songs on the CTTE album are more than 7 minutes and amazing and at least one has to be on this list.

Honorable mention to Shine on You Crazy Diamond(both parts) and Time by Floyd
The Island by The Decemberists
Won’t Get Fooled Again by the Who
War Pigs by Black Sabbath
Champagne Supernova by Oasis

Nope, i’m not done yet, here’s more emphasis on “Life’s Been Good” by Joe Walsh. And calling all you so called classic rock pundits, you know that it’s equivalent as blasphemy not to include “Life’s Been Good” on the list, don’t you? Just a reminder, you still got time, it’s not too late yet for an atonement to those who forget. Include Life’s Been Good now!

Another one occurred to me later today:

The O’Jays - “For The Love Of Money”

This is a good list. People have come up with all the classic rock tunes, but people have also posted a lot of newer tunes. It’s gonna be a bummer cutting this list down.

Bukowski | 12/2/2007, 8:57 pm EST

If you found out at 12:01 Monday that Saturday and Sunday were your last two days on earth, how would you feel knowing you wasted those two days on some meaningless insignificant list (will you let it stand RS? can your readers endure a deep philosophical question or do you prefer to keep them dumb so they’ll keep making unimportant lists and buying the magazine?)?

“Axl” got me to thinking, so I “wiki”ed “Appetite For Destruction.” Paradise City comes up just short at 6:46! Can you imagine what a great 7:00 classic that would make? No excessive music in that one!!!

My choice is:

Nights In White Satin.

No Moody Blues to be found anywhere! Shame, shame, shame (that’s even worse than no Judas Priest)! And they quite a few 7+ minute epics floating around in their catalogue!!!

TO add to the list of really good selections (Velvet Underground,Bob Dylan and Television songs) and some really shitty terrible songs (Freebird?!? Jesus of Suburbia?? come on people listen to good music) i would like to add Arkansas Revisited by The Bria Jonestown Massacre. Clocking in at a little over twelve minutes, this song just fucking rocks! Plain and simple. Peace.

I’m sorry, but anyone who thinks “Freebird” is some kind of great fuckin’ song should be smashed in the head repeatedly with a brick. Gimme a break.

Once again, NO FUCKING PRIEST!

Listen, I don’t particularly care about all those fuckin’ downloading rules!!! I don’t care how you get your hands on it, even if you have to sell your small cousin into white slavery to get the fuckin’ money for the CD.

Please, take the time, by hook or by crook, to get your grimy little hands on a copy of “Beyond The Realms Of Death” by Judas Priest.

That song fuckin’ rips! Even if it’s not in your genre of music, I’m sure can appreciate the constant tension between between beautiful melodic appregiation and heavy sonic power. It’s a masterpiece!!!

Judas Priest is definitely not a household name around here. They should be!

Bukowski | 12/2/2007, 10:09 am EST

When I was a freshman in high school, Rush left a small dent in me that was quick smoothed out (the day I got my 1st copy of Synchronicity). But they had one lesser known song that’s pretty great:
“Natural Science (8+)”
and “Jacob’s Ladder” is pretty exceptional as well.

Beyond that, Rush can suck my ass!

Bukowski | 12/2/2007, 9:54 am EST

Champagne Supernova (just over 7)

I don’t know they do it. Those Gallagher brothers are as dumb as dirt, (especially Liam) and yet they have just enough usuable grey matter to craft a good pop song. Idiot savants?

j from shanghai | 12/2/2007, 7:02 am EST

The list would be almost endless as most of the best songs are over 7 mins. But couple of latest ones are HIM”s Sleepwalking Past Hope and Nightwish’s The Poet and The Pendulum. Both well over 10mins and only couple of months old songs from 2007.

Bukowski | 12/2/2007, 6:40 am EST

Wow, no Genesis. The greatest band at the EP song and no love? I know there’s some people who usually post who are into them, they must be taking the weekend off!

Supper’s Ready
Fifth Of Firth (considered by many as the best prog rock (i hate that label) song)
The Musical Box
Watcher Of the Sky
Cinema Show
Dance of the Moonlit Knight
The Cage
Return Of The Giant Hogweed

Alternative 90’s Slop Rock need not apply . . .
Laying a guitar next to an amplifier for 5 minutes after a three minute song is over is just a 3 minute song with distorted shit.

The band should actually have to play something for the full 7 minutes!

And no 7 minute folk tunes. What the fuck is that?

The kings of the Long Song are SIGUR ROS hands down. Can’t beleive nobody is mentioning them. Their first couple albums AVERAGE around 7 minutes or maybe more, and they are ALL good! Not a minute wasted!

Smashing Pumpkins and Metallica all make fabulous longers too.
Along with Pumpkins, Zwan’s “Jesus I/Mary Star of the Sea” at 14:04 is fabulous.
Also wanna mention Sufjan Stevens’
“Tallest Man, Broadest Shoulders…” at 7:02. Amazing.
