First, it was Paul McCartney’s Memory Almost Full and Starbucks. Then it was Prince releasing his then-new single “Guitar” via Verizon phones. The Eagles followed that by offering their new album Long Road Out of Eden sorta-exclusively through Wal-Mart. Now, Metallica may have struck up a deal to debut the first single from their upcoming new album through the video game Rock Band. MTV Senior Vice President of home entertainment Paul DeGooyer, whose cable network collaborated with video game company Harmonix on Rock Band, talked to the Rocky Mountain News concerning debuting new music through the highly anticipated title. “There are a couple of things we’ve committed to, one of them with Metallica for example,” DeGooyer said. “They’ve reserved the right to give us their first single from their new album for the game.” Meaning the first time you hear the new Metallica single, it may likely be through tinny television speakers as four novice musicians keep score while banging away at plastic instruments. It’s refreshing to know that MTV will actually screen new music; it just won’t be on their channel. While the thought of being able to “play” the Metallica song may appeal to fans who can afford all that hardware, it shuns a much larger population of listeners who likely never even heard of Rock Band. We predict Metallica fans are gonna find alternate means of getting their hands on the track if it comes out first via video game … or at least invest in some really nice speakers for their TV.
