Be Your Own Pet “Get Awkward,” Channel “Robocop” On Sophomore LP: Album Preview

11/27/07, 5:44 pm EST

Nashville punks Be Your Own Pet refused to wilt under the added pressure of having released a hot debut as they began recording their second LP, Get Awkward. “I was trying not to think about, ‘ohh second album, better not suck,’ ” fiery lead singer Jemina Pearl tells Rolling Stone. “All of us just tried to concentrate on writing better songs.” After spending months recording in Nashville with producer Steve McDonald (and listening to a surplus of Iggy & the Stooges), the young band churned out an album that roars louder than their self-titled debut, as Pearl and Co. turn their explosive energy on surf-rock, the classic girl-group sound and more. The band blisters through fifteen songs in a little more than a half-hour, and although the new tracks are more nuanced and developed, they’re still charmingly raw.

While the threat of a sophomore slump didn’t affect Pearl (”I don’t read blogs or do any of that Internet stuff”), she did have a more business-like approach to this album. “We went into the studio more ready and willing to work really hard and try different things,” she says — an approach that stood in stark contrast to the careless aesthetics that accompanied their debut. While the new seriousness led to a few fits of writer’s block, Pearl had a cure for the dreaded creative affliction: “I’ll just write a song about a movie,” she admits.
One of these songs, “Bitches Leave,” was inspired by Robocop, specifically the scene when Kurtwood Smith disrupts Miguel Ferrer’s cocaine party with gun in hand, bluntly instructing the naked women, “Bitches, leave.” The song’s rallying cry of “Things aren’t pretty in New Detroit, so go ahead and get to the point” is obviously an homage to Robocop’s unique outlook on the Michigan city. Another cinema-inspired song, “Zombie Graveyard Party,” finds Pearl mining Return of the Living Dead, the off-shoot series of George C. Romero’s famous zombie flicks (”Ouch,” the closing track on their debut album, was inspired by the original Dawn of the Dead). Get Awkward’s potential first single, the break-neck surf-punker “The Kelly Affair,” is about Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, with Pearl sneering “Everybody here parties all the time, everybody here has sex on their mind, everybody here is popping pills.”

The album isn’t just about obscure films, however — it’s also markedly more autobiographical than the band’s previous effort. “Becky,” which sounds like X-Ray Spex covering “Do the Locomotion,” is about Pearl’s struggle to relate to the girls she used to encounter in high school, while “Bitches Leave” deals with Pearl’s distaste for groupies. “Super Soaked,” the album’s opening track, was written the day of Pearl’s twentieth birthday, and relives the experience of growing old. “My whole life has been one giant awkward phase,” Pearl says, reiterating the album title’s significance. “I’ve put everything I have in this album,” Pearl admits, “I’m proud of it.” Get Awkward is due out spring 2008.

i first ‘discovered’ be your own pet at the 2006 coachella. they blew away everyone at that festival with their kinetic set. i went and bought ’summer sensations’ right after and couldn’t believe these kids put out such a gorgeous pop-punk-rock ep. 5 perfectly literate, skewed, infectious songs; i thought they were IT. couldn’t wait for their full-length cd. when it came out, though, i was a bit disappointed. oh well, an small misstep, but ‘get awkward’ should be better, right? wrong. i don’t know, but it seems like 2 different bands put out the ep and the full-length cds. nothing they’ve wrote since ’summer sensations’ even comes close to those 5 songs. What’s up Jemina? ‘get awkward’ sounds typical, while ’summer sensations’ had me hoping be your own pet was going to be the next saviours of rock n roll. i’m still gonna see their show in vegas, cuz they’re awesome live. but it would’ve been better if i liked ‘get awkward’

Unfortunately one of the songs talked about in the article Becky and 2 others were deleted from the US release,I’m guessing it’s the label as these songs are on the Import version.

“Hopefully she’ll stop playing with toys with those boys and get with a real High Voltage band.”

She’s fine with who she’s got! I couldn’t think of better band members. They’re all so relatable, and as a group look like so much fun! I’m suprised no other member was mentioned very much…

If it were some “high volatge” band it wouldn’t be the same, I wouldn’t like them nearly as much…

And I really can’t stand Pat Benatar, so I certainly don’t want another one, thank you.

“Yep.”

No, not you again…but since I stumbled across your comment, there is a previous matter to set straight. Contrary to your misinformed and unfounded assumptions, I do not listen to the same music by the same artist all of the time. Listening to Nevermind 17000 times would be torture. Why would anybody in their right mind overplay an album they do not want to get tired of listening to? Your accusations and assumptions are completely off the mark, MESSED UP and inaccurate.

Haggard | 11/30/2007, 1:03 am EST

Leave it to Rolling Stone to not mention anyone else in band other than lead singer..

Weak

Metal Shawn G | 11/29/2007, 9:57 pm EST

Why should she? Good for her!

I’m right. She’s gonna fly the coupe and look for real rockers with SONIC POWER!

harold8maude | 11/29/2007, 6:50 pm EST

she’s a total brat! she just walks off stage whenever she feels like it! and ends the show like that without even an ounce of showmanship.
I’m a fan, and I’m sure this album will be insanely good, but i just wish she’d act as nice as the other guys in the band.

Metal Shawn G | 11/29/2007, 5:49 pm EST

That chick looks like a Wild Child!

Hopefully she’ll stop playing with toys with those boys and get with a real High Voltage band.

Yeah, sure. They write cute little pop-punk tunes, but she can do better!

It’s time for another Patti Smith, Pet Benatar or Joan Jett. Some high octane girl rocker is looooonnnng overdue!!!

Jor G | 11/29/2007, 5:18 pm EST

wow, ive been waiting for this too long.

Dana Doll | 11/29/2007, 9:22 am EST

Yep. Then me and Spencer’s sister would dispose of your body!

Bukowski | 11/29/2007, 9:21 am EST

Those kids better get a bigger tour bus or someone’s going to get murdered! The boys look pissed ’cause even though she’s stuck on the tour bus she won’t give any of them a shot!

She looks like she needs to melted like butter by a real man, and they need to visit a cathouse!!!

I’d like to help, blonde sweetie, but my fiancee would kill me while I sleep!!!

“we need more bands like byoP and less pretentious scenester indie bullshit.”

What’s your definition of “indie scene”? Present-day misused marketing term for the pretentious brainswashed sheep herds, or original meaning from yesteryear? On second thought, never mind answering the question.

jasper | 11/28/2007, 11:01 am EST

can’t wait for the new record. i saw them at ATP last year and they totally killed it- inciting a riot of nudity and punk fleshy ferocity. not sure the monkeys crowd was the right scene for them though- they got too much raw juice flowin!

Mike | 11/28/2007, 8:13 am EST

Why do we have to wait until spring? I want it now, dammit!

And Stephy, I’m sure the Rhodes are a horrible band.

XbrianX | 11/28/2007, 6:47 am EST

i saw them in b-more this past spring and they put on a good show even tho the too cool for school crowd acted like they came to see some other band. Jemina was clearly noticing this as well and 1/2 way through the last song threw the mic stand and yelled “this is the worst fuckin show we’ve ever had.” I can understand why. we need more bands like byoP and less pretentious scenester indie bullshit.

John | 11/28/2007, 3:12 am EST

best band ever .

sy | 11/28/2007, 2:08 am EST

i cant wait till this album hightlights the cd section in my local 99 cent only store in a couple of years!!!

Cristina | 11/28/2007, 1:19 am EST

I first heard these guys while I was in a dressing room at Urban Outfitters and I ended up concentrating more on dancing (more like head banging) than looking at the clothing I was trying on…I’m really stoked about a new album!

Stephy | 11/28/2007, 1:07 am EST

I saw BYOP open for Arctic Monkeys earlier this year at Hammerstein Ballroom. They’re all hype.

Check out The Rhodes (myspace.com/therhodesmusic).
