Extreme “Rejoin Forces,” Announce Reunion With Extreme Enthusiasm

11/26/07, 3:27 pm EST

Led Zeppelin’s doing it. So are the Police and My Bloody Valentine. Now, the latest band to announce they are reuniting is … Extreme! Fresh from failed ventures in Satellite Party and Van Halen, Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone have decided to “rejoin forces,” according to today’s press release, and come together for a reunion world tour and their first album in thirteen years. But can they revive that Extreme sound? Bettencourt promises the new album “will have all the ingredients of an Extreme record. The music is always Funkier than most rock bands — and born a Bipolar Bastard child of Mr. Zeppelin and Mrs. Beatles” (weirdo capitalization and comparisons his, not ours). Bettencourt didn’t end his extreme enthusiasm there.
When asking himself why Extreme should “rejoin forces,” Nuno gave an explanation worthy of his former Satellite Party compadre Perry Farrell: “Rock and Roll Famine … I know it might sound crazy, but there is a massive shortage of rock and roll on this planet. It’s almost extinct. I mean the true spirit of quality rock and roll — you know, Musicianship, when you would give up every moment of your day to master your instrument and create your own identity and sound so as to respectfully outdo all your past heroes whilst proudly wearing the badge of their influences.” The announcement also boasted of Extreme’s “Play With Me” appearing in Guitar Hero, a game that strives on the complete opposite of musicianship, where to “master your instrument” is to be really good at hitting four color-coated buttons. Remember the time when the band needed two Greatest Hits albums to truly represent their four-album career? You can reminisce about those halcyon days when the reformed Extreme kick off their world tour by playing the Boston Music Awards at that city’s Orpheum Theatre on December 1st. Are you Extremely pumped, or could you Extremely care less?

extreme rules. ditch the sarcasm just cuz they’re not as cover worthy as zac efron.

Johnny Kickass | 11/26/2007, 3:59 pm EST

I’m not a fan of Extreme, but he hit the nail on the head about music’s current state.

Today it’s all American Idol and tits’n'ass.

No wonder every 80’s / early 90’s band is reforming – they’re simply filling a void in the marketplace. Actual songwriting! Originality! The complete opposite of American Idol.

Unreality Music | 11/26/2007, 4:20 pm EST

I’m psyched about the Extreme reunion. I think the time’s right for them – Nuno and Gary haven’t settled on any one project since they disbanded.

Yeah, I think it’s a good thing. Might not seem like major news, but there’ll be a core group of fans who’ll love this news!

Jer | 11/26/2007, 6:07 pm EST

I’m delighted to hear of this reunion, although I wish this story had been covered by a journalist who could at least PRETEND he doesn’t have such distaste for his subject. Yeah, buddy, you’re hip.
Today.

Finally, these guys are an amazing rock band and the music industry needs a monster band like this to make music for us all again! Thanks, Extreme. That new drummer Kevin is gonna kick some ass for them. Geary and Mangini were great, but that guy can pound it. Pat, Nuno and Gary rock! Very overlooked rock band. Extreme rocks.

And if you don’t like what you see here, Get The Funk Out!

Not Impressed | 11/27/2007, 6:52 am EST

Methinks the journalist is being rather catty about Extreme’s works considering his own “work” (disguised as news) that he just coughed up and offered the world.

Four lines into the article “The Journalist” started twisting things and turning this into an opinion piece (nothing on this webpage indicates this is from a personal view column). For starters, I hardly call 1996 “fresh” from Van Halen – particularly in this music industry!

And how well does he know this industry – that he’s trying too hard to impress – that he credits Bettencourt with the “weirdo capitalization”? Does he think Nuno is sitting there writing the press release himself? He was QUOTED …those little marks that as a journalist he should know what they mean (but yeah, those comparisons really are Bettencourt’s fault it appears).

With such narrow-mindedness and need for self-gratification, I can certainly see why this person doesn’t get Extreme’s music.

Rolling Stone used to be reputed for cutting-edge content in previous decades. Now it just tries to cut it seems.

Mr. Lee Harvey | 11/27/2007, 9:05 am EST

Extreme rocks. This reporter should have been anonymous if he’s that biased…

DUDEYO | 11/27/2007, 10:07 am EST

Is that dude wearing a mask what is he Zorro. Yea I would agree and will pay to see even Extreme but would not pay to see any of the rap, pop or even some rock bands. Peace out.

Billy Both aka joenuno | 11/27/2007, 2:13 pm EST

why the hell are u gonna make a comment as of “Fresh from failed ventures in Satellite Party and Van Halen”. That’s wrong. Music isn’t about success or failure, it’s about creating art and making something beautiful. And we all know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For someone who represents a lot of people for a music magazine, that’s extremely ignorant. If you want to be respected in the music circles, you might want to refrain from such extreme criticism. Unless of course your from Led Zepplin, Queen, Willie Nelson or some other top shelf artist. And we wonder why American’s live in fear. Media like you who live off of the negetive. Think about it!

hootchietoad | 11/27/2007, 10:33 pm EST

So lets see, Gary’s VH album came out in 1998 (if that’s your definition of fresh you better check the milk in your fridge, jackass) and Satellite Party’s failure now lays on Nuno’s shoulders, not Perry “freak of the last 20 years, chipmunk on acid, every project since Ritual has been a fucking failure commercially” Farrell? Yeah right. Loser.

J | 11/28/2007, 8:46 pm EST

How the hell did this person get a job writing for Rolling Stone?! I found this page on a web search, Thanks to that peice of crap i now know this magazine is full of biased uninformative nonsense. So i won’t bother reading it or revisiting this site. Instead of trying to rip into a press release why not try and look into the state today’s music scene is in, it’s no wonder band’s from the past are having to reunite to save good music from extinction.

George | 11/29/2007, 5:28 pm EST

It’s funny that the writer now bashes Extreme but you may remember that way back in 1991 Nuno was given a portion of the cover of this magazine. Rolling Stone is a joke now anyway so I wouldn’t get too worked up over what they say. They can only sell copies of their mag if they feature a half-naked gal or some teen hearthrob on the cover. They’re long past being relevant.

rockonthemoon | 11/30/2007, 2:59 am EST

Why bother to care what the naysayers say or think about Extreme, Extreme is back and unlike Van Halen, they are still young with plenty of potential to keep making records for the next couple decades. This is a gift to any fans of rock music. I always thought that even know the 4 Extreme albums were quite impressive, this band had more left to give, more potential, and I mean lots more. I just hope this band keeps making records for years and years and develops even more chemistry. A very welcome fifth album. Will buy it for sure.

Oigres33 | 11/30/2007, 12:54 pm EST

The whole article is pathetic. Extreme is back, and thats all that cares. And it cares… theres plenty of people waiting for some good music to come. And if there was something they could do was exactly that.

Jim | 12/1/2007, 12:53 am EST

Screw you writer! When Extreme releases this CD; they will be considered again the most talented and best band in the country!!!!! You are an A hole. Pull up there CD’s and listen !!!!!

thebigo | 12/6/2007, 9:09 pm EST

The guy that wrote this is a total clown. He’s the exact reason Rolling Stone has to give away trial subscriptions to get people to read it. Nuno is a TALENTED musician, not these computer programmers RS and other crap mags tout as “musicians”. The editor should be fired for letting this writer’s obviously biased opinion taint his article on a great band that I, for one, am EXTREME-LY excited to hear is back in action!

Bambi | 12/9/2007, 12:43 am EST

If you ask me whoever wrote this story needs to be FIRED! You have no business writing for RS if you are gonna have such a crappy attitude. You are making RS look bad and making me glad that I never renewed my subscription because that article is just stupid!

The new Extreme CD is gonna rock!

Me | 1/9/2008, 5:37 am EST

The writer needs to go home.

Jennifer | 3/31/2008, 11:33 pm EST

I was ecstatic to hear that Extreme reunited. It is no secret to anyone who knows me that I think the world of Nuno Bettencourt and his musical genius. I love Extreme: always have, always will. Their music was always fresh and diverse, unlike most of their contemporaries. Don’t even get me started on Van Hagar. It was like opening a Christmas present. You never knew what you were going to get and I LOVE that! I can’t wait for the new cd to come out. I can’t wait for them to tour again. I hope they come to Chicago. I haven’t seen Nuno since Lolla in ‘05. And FYI, Satellite Party didn’t fail until AFTER Nuno left. And, Mr. Kreps (if you are indeed responsible for his crappy article), unlike the other bands you mentioned, Extreme isn’t rehashing the same old stuff. They’re not riding on the former glory of their old music. They’re creating new music. Nuno has been creating phenomenal music since Extreme broke up. Schizophonic, Mourning Widows, Dramagods. Maybe if you paid attention to more than the crap the emanates from the radio airwaves in this country, you might know that. I bet you’ll change your tune and be kissing Extreme’s collective backside when they’re topping the charts and blowing everybody away!

JBK3 | 5/20/2008, 8:51 pm EST

It’s pretty safe to assume that the writer probably lionizes whatever the “flavor-of-the-minute” band is so he can wax prevalent around the ol’ Rolling Stone water cooler with the interns half his age. Sit down and listen to an Extreme album before you open your mouth and qualify yourself worthy enough to write about them… Welcome back, boys…the void has been filled.

Dave | 6/23/2008, 5:31 pm EST

The Van Halen album with Gary was largely a terrible record, but mainly due to song writing – not Gary’s abilities. A couple of the tunes like “Fire in the Hole” and “Without You” were typical Van Halen and worked well. Its too bad that they never gave him a second shot. I’m not too much of an Extreme fan, but I wish them well.

Michelle | 10/22/2008, 11:38 pm EST

Hoping Extreme comes back my way, NY, they still look hot, sound hot, great new drummer, Nuno is one of a kind,Gary is awesome, soo animated and I love how he and Nuno sem to have a great chemistry onstage…stay with us guys, we miss u, and u r right Nuno..we’re hungry!!!!!
