UFO, STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT

melikeKISS | 12/16/2007, 12:57 pm EST

KISS ALIVE! was only overdubbed where needed, have you not seen the classic albums show on vh1 where they discussed it? i have seen KISS live 19 times and trust me they are a great live band! how about KISS unplugged? that one is pretty good also!

I read all of the comments and was surprised that there was no mention of Pink Floyd’s “Is there anybody out there”. It’s an outstanding live concert from the original wall tour, released in 2000. The recording quality is excellent and I never get tired of listening to it.

Apparent ly you have very few words to choose from!

RockStarGirlfriend | 11/28/2007, 5:13 pm EST

Definitely NIN “All That Could Have Been” and Foo Fighters “Skin and Bones”; however, we forgot the live double album that everyone burned out in high school and college: Depeche Mode, “101″

Jason Moss | 11/27/2007, 1:53 pm EST

This is Easy:
5) Led Zeppelin: How the West Was Won
4) Jimi Hendrix: Band of Gypsys
3) Allman Bros.: Live at the Fillmore East
2) The Who: Live at Leeds (original vinyl version
1) The Who: Live at Leeds (complete CD version including performance of Tommy)

I kept it to rock, because there are countless live recordings of artists like John Coltrane and Miles Davis and it boggles the mind to even try and pick the best.

And I excluded “Kiss: Alive” because of all the over-dubbing they did, which pretty much renders it not live.

r from r | 11/26/2007, 5:14 pm EST

Kudos to RS for picking “The Name of the Band is Talking Heads” over the better-known “Stop Making Sense.” Both are good, but the first one just rocks harder.

As many people have pointed out, “Waiting for Columbus” by Little Feat is probably the most glaring omission from the RS list, closely followed by Neil Young’s “Live Rust.”

Finally, here are two I don’t think have been mentioned so far:
“From Here to Eternity Live” — the Clash
“Hard Rain” — Bob Dylan (who wins the award for having the most different albums mentioned in this discussion)

“Didn’t Pearl Jam put out like 85 live albums one year? That’s confusing. I’ll bet they charge top dollar for a concert seat just like everyone else these days!”

Where have you been? I can go to 3 Pearl Jam concerts (each with a 25-30 song setlist), 3 U2 concerts, or 3 Foo Fighters concerts for the face value price of ONE VAN HALEN CONCERT TICKET. The VH tickets are so overpriced, those who can’t go to the concert are now selling them at craigslist for “under face value” prices.

Some great choices here. The first album I thought of was “It’s too late to stop now” by Van Morrison. Such a great album and it doesn’t get enough notice. I see that other comments echo this sentiment, which is fantastic.

5)REO T.W.O.- which I recently found out was recorded live but released as a studio album, so I re-bought the CD and listened with new ears and now it seems so obvious…yet somehow it still kicks more ass than anything else they ever accomplished and I am hard-pressed to believe it wasn’t a fluke.
6) Mountain did a live LP with a side-long version of Nantucket Sleighride which seems appropo for the coming season.
7) U2 suck.

The Return Of . . . | 11/25/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Little Feat? I remember the name from when I really young! I had an Alice Cooper record on the Warner label. Back then WB didn’t have that boring white label with just the WB sign stampted on top. They had a very psychedelic picture of a road with all these pretty trees with the inscription on the top that read, “Burbank, The Home of Warner Bros. Records”

And the inner sleeve had this offer of a variety album with all these different aftists on it. All you had to do was mail $2 to Warner with the cut out order form on the sleeve and they’d send you the record! Why I never did it is completely beyond me!!!

Anyway, some of the artists included Seals and Crofts, The Doobies, Cheech and Chong (if my memory serves me correctly) Rod Stewart and a whole lot of other great artists!

One of the artists was Little Feat. I have no idea what genre of rock they are, but I think I’m gonna check it out! If there are any slightly older rockers who remember the “Burbank” label and/or the record offer, I would love to hear your memories.

Well anyway, thanks for planting the Little Feat thing in my head. I might just roll the dice, buy the disc and check ‘em out! Peace Out

What about Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense? Let’s not forget Little Feat’s Waiting For Columbus either.

Didn’t Pearl Jam put out like 85 live albums one year? That’s confusing. I’ll bet they charge top dollar for a concert seat just like everyone else these days!

Chinaski | 11/25/2007, 5:18 am EST

Yes, there were about 12 people in the audience, but it was live! Let It Be.

peace arch | 11/25/2007, 4:42 am EST

Choosing a live album as a favorite is so subjective. But it’s even more incredible when you actually attended and experienced “the concert” which was made into a live album.

PEARL JAM LIVE AT THE GORGE.

“1. And All That Could Have Been by Nine Inch Nails

2. Frampton Comes Alive by the late great Sir Peter Frampton”

What kind of psychotic . . . Peter Frampton is neither knighted nor dead! And hey, easy with the NIN stuff!

. . . And “Since of I’ve Been Loving You” and “Moby Dick” alone make “The Song Remains The Same” a classic!

Cravens | 11/25/2007, 4:18 am EST

Made In Japan - Deep Purple

Nirvana - Unplugged

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Bowie - Stage

Under Byen - Live at Halden Pop (for the obscurity of it, and because it IS that good)

(And honourable mention to “R.E.M. Live (2007)” it really IS quite good)

And Nine Inch Nails? Naah… Me thinks a fanboy tries to obscure the list a little by entering “And All That Could Have Been” multible times with a very high level of consistency in writing style.

Anywho.

Long Island Lolita | 11/25/2007, 3:50 am EST

Well according to the pollster(s)
these are the greatest live albums:
“nirvana on mtv unplugged
PEARL JAM LIVE AT THE GORGE
Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been.”

aaaa huh.

Well, I think Made In Japan by Deep Purple blows the doors off these albums and all the rest of the choices as well!

Philbin | 11/25/2007, 2:58 am EST

Alive 1 and 2 completely rock and contain no musical filler, addititives or musical byproducts!

Completely organic despite what the Adkins junk food alt music freak will tell ya!

PS I decided to have a look around for the sake of the musical conspiracy theorists. The few pages I found, such as “Wiki” provide no quotes from Kramer, or any member of the band. The writers make allusions to particular people without providing a single quotation or siting any other source making these claims about the Alive records being bogus!

And who writes Wiki pages? You and me. Anybody can create a wiki page! If interested, the best thing you can do is You Tube KISS concert footage from 1975 and up. Judge for yourself. And if you listen to the Alive albums and you happen to know a little bit about how records are made, trust your ears. Live records have a certain resonanace to them. Dokken’s Beast From the East is a product of studio tricks, and you can hear it. Good live records sound like good live records, end of story!

Rock | 11/25/2007, 2:46 am EST

Yeah, I agree with Scott. Where the hell is all this love for that nine inch nails album coming from? It’s probably some ‘tard changing his name and reposting. Hell, probably Reznor himself.

“I hate to be a bubble buster, but “Kiss Alive” is not actually a live album (this is well documented). After listening to hours of live recordings, the band and the producer decided to insert crowd noise and stage banter over studio recordings. Why, you ask? Because their musical abilities were that of a small town bar band.”

bzzz. WRONG! Some of the crowd noise was enhanced but that’s it!

It must really pain you to know that a band that you detest can do something better than almost any other band!

Small town? Yeah, Manhattan’s a real small town! You can’t get a following in the world’s greatest city if you can’t play.

kiss alive, give me a fucking break, they have not and will not ever record a song that is worth a shit……”

I’ll bet you two brainsurgeons never listened to their live work. And anyone who like these shitty punk bands who recorded entire albums in under an hour in someone’s basement probably can’t perceive much else of anything that doesn’t sound like a “fart” in the first place. All these pasty faced social misfits worship underground bands simply so they can walk around like they’re superior because they know names of bands that their classmates don’t know. Quite often these bands are underground and unknown simply because they suck!

The Song Remains the Same is not the disaster that many people believe that it is. Actually, overall, it’s pretty damned good! Zep wanted to do an All MSG movie, which didn’t allow them to get better versions of some songs from their set list. (The only real rough spot in the whole show was the “Whole Lotta Love” medley. That was kind of a mess!)

I think most people come to the negative conclusion based on second hand information rather than having sat down down and actually watched it!

“Stop making sense” is the best live album ever, and it’s soooo good that it seems to be made on studio.

Nirvana’s “Unplugged in New York” is also really cool, and I need to confess that, in my opinion, live albums used to suck.

Another good live album: “Kicking television”, by Wilco, or “I Might be Wrong”, by Radiohead

It’s a damn shame that we don’t get live albums as prolifically as we did between 1970 and 1982.

1- Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends-Ladies And Gentleman Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2 - Wings - Wings Across America
3 - Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive!
4 - Warren Zevon - Stand In The Fire
5 - Jackson Browne - Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1
6 - R.E.M. - R.E.M. Live!
7 - Eagles - Live
8 - U2 - Under A Blood Red Sky (even though it would be nice if the ENTIRE Red Rocks show was legally released)
9 - Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians - Gotta Let This Hen Out
10 - The Jacksons - Live
11 - The Jam - Dig The New Breed
12 - Cheap Trick - Live At Budokan (I & II)

Aerosmith’s “Live Bootleg” from 1978: It was poorly-received originally, with people wondering why the band was choosing scrappy performances over more-polished ones … but it was ahead of its time, it captures the youthful edge that the post- reunion band simply can’t recapture. Belongs on your list if only for the performances of “Toys in the Attic” and “Last Child”.
