Zeppelin Watch: Ian Astbury says The Cult Will Open for Led Zep in Cincinnati Next Year

11/21/07, 10:47 am EST

During a gig at a small Cincinnati club last Saturday, Cult singer Ian Astbury let slip that the Cult will be opening for Led Zeppelin during the band’s still-unannounced 2008 reunion tour. “We’ll be back next year,” Astbury assured the Cincy faithful. “Because we’re opening for a band you may have heard of … the name starts with an ‘L’ and has a ‘Z’ in it.” Before you could say “Liz Phair” or “Limp Bizkit,” Astbury was nodding to confirm that the band in question was Led Zeppelin. Neither representatives for Led Zeppelin nor for the Cult had any comment, and thus far, Zeppelin has neither confirmed nor denied a full-blown reunion tour. Jimmy Page hopes for a full jaunt, while Robert Plant remains pessimistic of the reunion lasting any longer than the band’s one-night-only show on December 10th at London’s O2 Arena.
Here’s what we think happened: The Cult were probably told that if the Zep show goes well and they do decide to tour, the Cult would be offered an opening slot on the tour. Astbury likely took this to mean that the Cult had just scored the best opening gig in rockdom, and proudly proclaimed this at the Cinci show — even though Zeppelin themselves have not finalized any tour plans. Whether Astbury’s announcement endangers any prospective tour, or the Cult’s opening slot, remains to be seen. But the chances of a full Zeppelin tour are a lot better than they were last week.

Have any of you people ever seen The Cult? Maybe they’re an ’80’s club band here in the US but they definetly have more popularity across the pond. Some say Led Zep doesn’t need an opener. Why not? It’s their show! If they put Elmo out there as their opener I’d go regardless. I happened to be one the lucky few to see the 1st reincarnation of Led Zep with Jason B. as the drummer back in the ’80’s. The concert started at 10am and didn’t end to well after midnight with tons of talent playing in between. From the moment we entered the building, all anybody talked about was Led Zep. In between each act, Arsinio Hall introduced the next act and eventually gave up because the screaming for Led Zep was overwhelming. Needless to say, even though Jason wasn’t nearly as good as his dad, it was the best concert I ever attended. We all have our favorites, but for me, Robert is the ultimate frontman and Jimmy Page the ultimate guitarist. Robert had it then and after seeing him perform with Alison Kraus, he’s got it now. I mean he really still has IT - the voice, the hair (love the hair) and the unmistakable sex appeal regardless of how feminine his hand gestures might be. So if The Cult opens, enjoy it, you might be surprised and realize they’re still relevant. If not, got buy yourself a beer or something.

the cult, opening? Would the mighty Zep even need an opener? If so, and no disrespect to a great band from that bad era of the 80’s, why would they pick a club touring band from 08? Sep needed no one to warm up back in the day. Still think this is all wishful thinking, as sadly, I think Mr Plant knows to leave well enough alone. Long live Zep!

I hope and pray that the rumor turns out to be true. The Cult and Zeppelin in one show together would be THE show to end all shows…it’s a dream concert for sure. PLEASE let it happen!

A Wish For My Marine | 12/18/2007, 9:09 pm EST

I think LZ should do a US tour…or at least like a couple of shows at major cities. I’d be one of those willing to pay an arm and leg and eye and finger….etc….to see them live!

Anyway, my husband is a Marine and I wish they would tour later on next year…so when he comes back from deployment, he’d be able to see them.

Lucky are those who went to O2…they’re part of LZ history!

cinciwitness2 | 12/15/2007, 1:20 pm EST

It was only a hint and Ian issued a disclaimer- “nothing is final.” At least it gives Cult fans a chance to comment on such a classic, brilliant show from one of the best all-time hard rock bands. Zep couldn’t get a better opening act. The Cult have paid homage to their sound and they should be flattered.

Cincy Show | 12/15/2007, 12:53 pm EST

The original source of this story must have been on acid. I was in the front row at the show and Ian only hinted at the the possibility of opening for a band next year with an L and Z it it. Regardless, it got the audience pumped and Ian and ‘The Duff’ put on a great show.

Cincywitness | 12/15/2007, 11:35 am EST

I was at the The Cult show in Cincy and Ian hinted at the possibility of opening for a band with an L and Z in the name. He never committed to saying what band nor that it was guaranteed reality. Either way, it got the crowd going and the band put on a quality show laden with a combination of Ian’s enchanting vocals and Duffy’s melodic precise guitar riffs, and hats off to bass and drum support. Incredible set!

If GNR opens for Zep, Zep wouldnt get on stage till 2 in the morning with Axl’s shtick

dmille | 12/4/2007, 12:25 am EST

“Zeppelin probably never even heard of these guys”? Must be why Plant was quoted in RS referring to the Cult as a “Post-Zeppelin flashback”…

Kruzinski | 11/27/2007, 3:31 pm EST

Basser hit the nail on the head. Its a vocal thing with Plant, and the last thing the guy would want to do is initiate a repeat of that Daltry fiasco that went down with the Who last year. All this nostalgia. Silly, silly, silly.

Who Care’s About The Opener….

“R.I.P. Kevin DuBrow”

Gonzo, Charton Heston is right about the opening act thing. I roadied and did sound on and off for about 20 years. Opening acts are an afterthought, and rarely stay with a headliner throughout an entire tour. The openers are usually changed for regonial fans to see a opening band that’s popular in that particular area of the world! And bands will be lining up around the block to open for Zeppelin. From my experience, Zeppelin would have a short list of possible openers that could start the first leg of the tour and since a tour hasn’t been anounced those decisions haven’t been made yet. I agree with Charlton, I think it’s just wishful thinking on the part of The Cult!

Gonzo,

Sorry you’re unable to see the humor in all of it!!!

Anyway, if you think Zeppelin are definite on their opening act, then you just don’t know how tours work!

Joe | 11/22/2007, 11:15 pm EST

GNR would actually make a modicum of sense as the opening band for any possible LZ tour.

Gonzo Serj | 11/22/2007, 10:28 pm EST

hey charlton-
glad you have the low down on the band’s plans, you must be a real insider (jackass)

Anyway, I hope the band does at least a limited tour, if Plant’s up for it.

Oh, by the way, I wish to say hello to my Red Sox friend. You may have beaten the Yankees in the ALCS, but they never beat the New York motherfuckin’ Mets!!! Maybe, this oldie but goodie will refresh your memory . . . “Behind the bag, the ball gets through Buckner and the METS WIN IT!!!”

MOOKIE ‘86 BABY!!!

Charlton Heston is an old fuck | 11/22/2007, 10:23 am EST

aaaahhhhh! He’s drunk and high! He thinks he’s playing Pittsburgh and he’s in Cincinati! Zeppelin probably never even heard of these guys! He just talking shit!

Zep’s still trying to figure out what they’re going to do. The last thing they’re thinking about is an opening act. They decide that stuff weeks, sometimes days before the tours start.

Opening bands jump on an off tours more than people riding Greyhound! Wishful thinking! Get bent, Ian!

DBRiley99 | 11/21/2007, 7:31 pm EST

To see this happen for me is up there with the Red Sox winning in 04′. It would be the second best thing to see in my life.

Staggerlee | 11/21/2007, 7:27 pm EST

This reunion has happened, it was just called Page & Plant. I think they should do a few shows, record them on DVD and bow out.

DUDEYO | 11/21/2007, 6:28 pm EST

This nut sack doesn’t know what he is talking about it is only wishful thinking party on Garth.
Peace out.

GUNS N ROSES FOR OPENER ON THE ZEP TOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

basser | 11/21/2007, 1:26 pm EST

I think Robert Plant is hesitant to a full tour, worrying that his voice won’t hold out for a full U.S. tour. Plant can still sing but he - like every other rock singer from the 1960s and 1970s (except Paul Rodgers) just can’t quite sing the way he used to. I love Led Zeppelin, but I bet you almost anything that is why Plant is hesitant to do a full tour. It would be very, very hard for him to wail for two hours a night, the way he did in Zeppelin back in the day. It would be great for us fans if he’d try it, but I’m sure that is why he is holding off from a full-blown tour …
