Sad Day on E Street: Danny Federici to Leave Bruce Springsteen Tour for Health Reasons

11/21/07, 11:00 am EST

At the conclusion of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s November 19th show in Boston, the musicians bid an emotional onstage farewell to one of their own: keyboardist Danny Federici, who will be taking a leave of absence from the tour to receive treatment for melanoma. “Danny is one of the pillars of our sound,” Springsteen said in a statement the next day, as the band prepared to launch the European leg of the Magic tour. “We all eagerly await his healthy and speedy return.”

Charlie Giordano, who played keyboard for Springsteen on the 2006 Seeger Sessions album and tour, will substitute for Federici, who began playing with Springsteen in Asbury Park, New Jersey, in the late Sixties. During the Boston show, the band gave Federici the spotlight on “Kitty’s Back” and “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy).” Also included were “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and “The E Street Shuffle,” two of Springsteen’s tributes to his backing band’s brotherhood. Federici, Springsteen noted in his statement, “has played beside me as a great friend for more than forty years.” Live footage from the E Street Band’s emotional farewell to Federici two nights ago, along with the band’s 2008 tour itinerary, is after the jump.

Danny, my prayers every night will include wishes for a healthy recovery and return to the place where nobody can feel your shoes. That distinctive organ and absolutely in comparable accordian that no other Band has will be sorely missed. But, more importantly, we Tramps have always loved you. That smile while playing, and that intensive look when really getting down is yours alone. May God Bless you, Danny. May the Phantom recover 100%!

Steevee Dee | 11/23/2007, 5:10 pm EST

I wish Danny a speedy recovery…everytime I hear a Springsteen tune he’ll be on my mind and in my heart.

Joad | 11/23/2007, 3:21 am EST

We will miss him in Europe. Let’s pray for a speedy recovery for Danny and a reunited E street Band for the spring dates over here.

filiz çağlar | 11/22/2007, 1:21 pm EST

I’m so sad and also thinking quickly about Danny’s past years in The E-Street Band’s organ and understanding how he was a great person with all his body and all his great sound on the background. I really hope that he’ll be back soon and will be great just like he was used to be. I love you and I know everybody loves you whoever knows The Boss in this cruel world…

Julie | 11/21/2007, 2:07 pm EST

Patti from Jersey | 11/21/2007, 12:29 pm EST
