New York Times: Indie Rock Is Destroying America!

11/20/07, 4:30 pm EST

New York Times columnist David Brooks — known for his smarmy tone, moderate conservative politics and half-baked cultural theories — has a new hypothesis for everything that’s wrong with our country: the Arcade Fire! According to Brooks, indie rock is another symptom of the fragmentation of American society, because it’s a niche market for upper-middle -class weenies. Fair enough, you may say, but then he goes on to talk about how the music “stinks” because it’s “lost touch” with our “common roots” and because — take a breath — it is “considered inappropriate or even immoral for white musicians to appropriate African-American styles” these days. This is compared to the Sixties and Seventies, when it was okay for Mick Jagger to write “Brown Sugar,” or something like that.

We’re all for calling out indie rockers, but a couple things: Niche music for upper-middle-class elites is nothing new — anybody remember the Cambridge folk scene in the Fifties? It spurred a boom that produced one of those guys that Brooks might like: Bob Dylan. And somebody should tell those dudes in Chromeo that they’re being wildly inappropriate or immoral; if anything, most indie rockers don’t try to make black music (i.e., hip-hop) these days because they still have bad memories of 311 from the Nineties. We look forward to Paul Krugman’s takedown of freak folk next week.

Rule of thumb – if it’s a New York Times cultural piece, it’s wrong.

When a 50 year old magazine tries telling another old magazine things about current pop music culture.

Didn’t see that coming.

“New York Times columnist David Brooks – known for his smarmy tone, moderate conservative politics and half-baked cultural theories”

Gee, RS, tell us what you really think!!!

If David Brooks has said “rap” and “Reality TV” i’d have to agree with him!

I can sum up what is wrong with current music in one word: Nickeback.

The New York Times is a newspaper, not a magazine. You probably don’t know there is a difference!

The New York Times is a newspaper, not a magazine. You probably can’t tell the difference!

311…oh yeah.

What a tool.

I can see the guy’s point… kind of. However, the Arcade Fire rocks. If anyone’s to blame, it’s the fans, especially the hipsters who flock around to nothing but simple elitism.

Opinions people…just sour opinions!

Chromeo rocks!

What a joke David Brooks has become. I’ve been listening to his rheoric, and reading his whiney drivel for 8 years now, and I can state flatly, that everything he has advocated for has turned into utter failure.

Hey Brooks! Wake up you WEENIE! You have NO CREDIBILITY LEFT! When are you going to start getting it right?

conservative a-holes need to clean up their own back yards before pointing the finger at all those “anti-americans”.

there are some points of truth, but he failed (because he’s an older white guy obsessed with his “golden-age” boomer music) to consider teh rise of alternatvie hip-hop. This music is also a fragment, and meant for the liberal-arts upper-middle class set (both black and white), but it is more open to contributions from people like El-P. The only difference is, where the ROlling Stones copped black music, while no other “major arena” artists were black, in the alternative hip-hop scene the spotlight stays on blacks, while recognizing contributions from whites as well.

Yeah, like the NY Times isn’t elitist…

Philbin | 11/22/2007, 4:53 am EST

this is fuckin’ hysterical. NY Times is one of the most liberal papers on the planet. You would think people were talking about the New York Post.

“conservative a-holes need to clean up their own back yards before pointing the finger at all those “anti-americans”.”

ummmm. It’s one columnist with one column! Something tells me that you’ve probably never actually read the NY Times!

Honey, dial nine eleven! There’s some “liberal” stalker in our back yard!!!
