Weekend Rock List: Best Musicians-Slash-Actors

11/16/07, 2:55 pm EST

After reading the I’m Not There feature in the current issue of Rolling Stone, rather than thinking about actors who play musicians (like in the Bob Dylan biopic), we started thinking about musicians who are also actors. For instance, nothing beats the thrill of watching a really horrible film, like Torque or The Rage: Carrie 2, and suddenly seeing X’s John Doe come on screen. To pay tribute to those artists that double as talented actors, we ask you which artists pulling double-duty are your favorites. On Monday, we’ll hand out our Oscars for the Best Acting Musicians. Although we’re really tempted to throw Reba McEntire on this list based solely on her performance in Tremors, these are our five picks:

  • David Bowie (Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell to Earth)
  • Mos Def (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, 16 Blocks)
  • Kris Kristofferson (Silver City, A Star Is Born)
  • Courtney Love (The People Vs. Larry Flynt, Sid & Nancy)
  • Tom Waits (Down By Law, Short Cuts)

Robbie Robertson in “The Crossing Guard,” getting put in a headlock by Jack Nicholson. Justifiable on so many levels…

Kristofferson is very good. Bowie and Yoakam are also good.
I know its a “rock” magazine, but Tim McGraw is actually not bad and hasn’t been mentioned once. (Friday Night Lights).
And Dolly Parton, 9 to 5 baby.
Tupac was actually very good, too.

THX-1138 | 11/18/2007, 7:27 pm EST

Can’t really argue with that list. David Bowie is usually pretty good in anything he’s cast in. Bowie finds a way to meld his musical eccentricities into his acting (The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Prestige.) The same for Tom Waits. He’s brilliant in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I generally enjoy watching Iggy Pop in anything (Coffee and Cigarettes) and love Willie Nelson in Half-Baked and Wag the Dog.

No you fuckin’ idiots! That wasn’t Bjork in the “Dancing in The Dark” video, that was the chick from “Friends”! How can you confuse the two, they don’t look anything like each other.

I do like the bear in the “Human Behavior” video, though.

bloodzilla | 11/18/2007, 1:45 am EST

a lot of musician/actors are only good at making music or acting but not both. bjork is excellent at both. i wish dancer in the dark hadn’t been such a bad experience for her because she would have been awesome in the science of sleep. actually, though, charlotte gainsbourg is also a good musician and actress. carrie brownstein has done a couple of online things with fred armisen. she’s pretty funny and one of the best guitarists ever, so maybe she will become another good example.

Steven Speilberg desperately wanted her to take the role and asked her many times. Who knows, if she had she might have been nominated for an Oscar and had a successful career in film. But none the less she rocked in both movies she was in.

Neil Diamond had a great soundtrack. The acting was shooty in the Jazz Singer.

Flea and Keidas were great in Point Break. Don’t forget Flea in Gus Van Zants My Own Private Idaho.

Pearl Jam was entertaining in Singles.

David Johansen played a great role in Let it Ride.

Colonel Bruce Hampton was Epic along with Dwight Yoakam in SlingBlade.

Plus Iggy Pop and Tom Waits were memorable in Jim Jarmusch’s Cigarette’s and Coffee. Along with Rza and Gza with Bill Murray.

Aretha Franklin in the Blues Brothers is a keeper. Plus that whole band is full of Legends.

I guess Bowie and Tom Waits are the 2 best choices, but here are some other good and strange ones:

1. Iggy Pop, “The Crow 2″, “Cry Baby” (Iggy is funny and bizarre in any role)

2. Dwight Yoakam (Fantastic actor, dont know much about his music but love his acting)

3. Ice Cube in “Boyz N The Hood”

4. David Johansen (I Love The New York Dolls more but I still get a Kick Out of seeing him in “Scrooged” with Bill Murray)

5. James Brown, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin in “The Blues Brothers” (They all have the best scenes in the movie, dah!)

6. John Doe From “X” has done a lot of good acting in many B movies.

7. Snoop Dogg as “Huggy bear”, very funny.

8. Remember Phil Collins in those old episodes of “Miami Vice”?, that was bizzare, hehe.

9. Roger Dartley in “Tommy” (He’s done other stuff, I think I saw him in an episode of “Highlander” and “That 70’s show” once, very funny)

10. The Pear Jam Guys in “Singles”

Don’t forget Bowie in The Prestige or his appearance in Extras.

I actually liked the RZA in American Gangster, too.

Meatloaf as “Bitchtits” in Fight Club

This topic always makes me long for Bono playing Mr. MacPhisto in the Batman Forever movie, which Joel Schumacher wanted but it never materialized

hmmm . . . How about Neil Diamond in the JAZZ SINGER. A much more substantial role than Saving Silverman. I believe he won an Oscar for “Love On the Rocks.”

Don’t forget LONE STAR (1996)—wonderful, underrated film, and Kristofferson just steals the show.
