Pete Doherty: “I’d Be a Liar If I Said I’d Never Do Drugs Again”

11/16/07, 11:20 am EST

When Pete Doherty spoke with Rolling Stone’s Austin Scaggs for the current issue, he swore he was totally clean and sober. Of course, just days later photographs of the Babyshambles leader shooting up hit the British tabs, and he was back in rehab. “I can honestly say that the reason I do drugs is not because of my childhood, or because I have self-esteem issues or resentments. It’s purely because I enjoy it,” he told us. To read the rest of the interview (where Doherty shouts out Julian Casablancas, 50 Cent and reggae) and to listen to audio clips of Doherty talking about rehab, laying down vocals for the new Babyshambles record Shotter’s Nation and picking out a French Fry fork for Paul McCartney, click here.

When he’s gone, all you haters are gonna change your tune. He’s an underrated songwriter with a taste for drugs. At least he’s not BS’ing the situation.

The Libertines? Great. Babyshambles? Acceptable.
Doherty? Dead soon?

He’s an effin’ genius, and if he enjoys doing drugs, then he quite as well knows his limit.
