In the Studio: Panic! at the Disco (With Bonus Pete Wentz Video Interview)

11/16/07, 12:56 pm EST

Panic! at the Disco guitarist-lyricist Ryan Ross is tired of computer-tuned vocals and software-tweaked drums. “People have taken technology so far, to the point where music is almost sterile these days,” he says from the studio in Las Vegas’ Palms Hotel, taking a break from recording sessions for the band’s second album. “With all those old rock & roll records, you can really feel there’s a character to them, because it was played by real people. I feel like a lot of that’s missing now.” It’s a common argument these days, but Ross is an odd person to be making it: His own band’s platinum debut, the Fall Out Boy-plus-synth-style A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, was a prime offender, overflowing with maxed-out pitch-correction and baroque Pro Tools trickery. “That’s a valid point,” Ross says. “That record is basically programmed to a T. I mean, everything is lined up and perfect.”

Click here to watch Pete Wentz talk about the new Panic! songs he’s heard so far, his favorite new lyrics and how he’s watched the band grow up and evolve.

For their second album, everything is different: The band is writing songs on acoustic guitars, not on computers. And even though the group members have a far higher budget at their disposal than the $10,000 they spent on the first one, they’re recording the album live in the studio. “We do take after take until we get it right,” Ross says. “It’s a lot harder, but it’s making us play better.” They were still in high school when they recorded Fever, and it seems like they’re faintly embarrassed by it: “I think that everybody kind of changes a lot between the time they’re seventeen and when they’re twenty-one or twenty-two,” says Ross.

The growing process hasn’t been easy. The band discarded ten or so songs for what would have been an entirely different version of the album, recorded in a cabin forty-five minutes outside Vegas. “It had a lot of cinematic instrumentation, and it felt more like a side project,” Ross says.

The group cemented its current direction with a song called “Nine in the Afternoon.” “It’s influenced by the music our parents listened to: the Beach Boys, the Kinks, the Beatles,” says Ross. “Our new songs are more like classic rock than modern rock. We got older and started listening to different music – and this seems like the natural thing to do right now.”

They are amazing!!!!
I love Pretty Odd BUT I love Fever…More
So what it kills me inside that I fell in love with them this year and NEVER got to see an old concert.
According to my Brother The Beatles were the best band ever (I think Panic! are but still)
so if they’ve changed to apparently the best band ever I’m fine with it.
If you ever need help and your obsessed with Panic! then do what I do stare at 163 pictures of them and listen to their music (old or new)
I’m gonna listen to Time To Dance now cos that’s what I listen too when I hurt myself.

FOB&PATDrOk | 2/21/2008, 8:01 pm EST

people if you think their album is going to suck than don’t take time to write your stupid comments by the way panic at the disco is natural unlike some other bands they just came up with new ideas they want to be the way they are and they always will be and they write their own lyrics most ppl these days buy lyrics and as Ryan said “you can’t write in another mood when you are already in a mood you’re going threw” so give them a break they are awesome!!!!!

EMJ | 2/8/2008, 2:15 pm EST

I LOVE PANIC! AT THE DISCO
it’s my favourite band and i love their new single! Nine in the afternoon

sweet :D | 1/12/2008, 9:51 am EST

panic at the disco is a great band that will make history because their music is so goddamn flexible and dont make music just for 16 year old teens.. my mother even thinks they are great!
i get so irritated when some guys say that brendon is a bad singer, he and the band is putting on a hell of a show live then so what if some tunes is not where they are supposed to be. it is so hard to do a great show and play the songs perfectly, i should know cause im in a band myself. and something else that shows how talented theese guys are is that they are dropping the electro and the computer on their new album and make something inspired by the beatles and other early rock it just get more personal that way!

stupid panic | 12/30/2007, 5:06 pm EST

It’s been at least 2 years since the first album.
I thought they were okay, but there’s much more music I prefer to Panic.
With all these changes, I doubt the new album will even sound like them, much less be good.

i dont know, i loved there last record but im starting to wonder about the next one. Somtimes changing ur 2nd record completely from the first one isnt exactly a good idea. i mean u have to make it diffenrent but but giving it an extreem makover might not be so good for there fan base. All i know is with the postponment of the record, and the whole puzzle and date on there site thing the record better be good. if its to different they might not have too many fans left.

i absoultely love these guys and can wait for the album.

i love them live, i actually think their better live then technological altered.

they are also very 80’s. i feel like they are the new Duran Duran.

Cynthia | 11/24/2007, 3:42 pm EST

Holy are u kidding?! If they drop the synths, dancebeats, and electronically tuned vocals its going to make them sound real! I think dropping all that extra stuff is going to be awesome, even though “A Fever…” had all that in the first part of the album it still rocked. I think taking out the synths and electronic vocals and stuff is going to be a great kind of different and it’ll be down to earth REAL music!! Panic! all the way!

keerthi | 11/24/2007, 9:44 am EST

To Dennis A. they are not horrible live, granted they’re not amazing but still… I have to be honest, after all this waiting, I’m just not that excited anymore, I loved the dance stuff, but I’m open to classic rock too, but I guess what I’m trying to say is I wish they would give us the best of both worlds, just not give us the complete opposite of Fever… well good luck to them, because fans are getting anxious and more than a few are skeptical about this new album.

patdfanatic | 11/20/2007, 7:56 pm EST

not to sound mean but its about time!! im soo excited– i feel like i’ve been waiting for the album forever! this album sounds awsome and i cant wait. the ONLY bad part is that march is so far awayyy

Peyton | 11/20/2007, 12:39 am EST

i’m gonna miss the old panic! but it’s great that they’ve grown. i just hope it’s for the better and they come out of this new album like the pros they’ve started to become. =]

Brenda | 11/19/2007, 5:05 pm EST

Well, I’m gonna miss the “electrorock” of this band. They are great alive, just look for videos like “build god the we’ll talk”.

Panic! Its Me at the Disco | 11/19/2007, 2:57 pm EST

WEll, I really like them if they are the most hateed band, or most famous in the world, as long as i live they will be #1 on my list. I will actually like the new transistion to a nicer soft side, instead of dirty Las Vegas stripper kinda thing. I think it will be more enjoyable and will make everyones day a better day. Since I listen to their music practically 24/7 and never get tired, I will relax to the peaceful sound to their new albulm, and when i wanna get up, i will play their old music that makes me wanna jump!

ugh | 11/18/2007, 2:36 pm EST

honestly i liked their cd for like a week before i realized they are bad. they are awful live. the singer cant hit any of the right notes but of course the new-age tweeny booppers dont seem to notice or even care.

jenni | 11/16/2007, 9:15 pm EST

panic! at the disco is a great band. brendon’s voice is amazing. don’t believe me? check out their LIVE cover of the song “slow motion” by “third eye blind”.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=S M_9WIcjn7I

it’s completely live and it’s genius. brendon is a musical prodigy. he can sing beautifully, brillantly play the piano and the guitar, and i think a few other instruments. the other boys have been playing since they were like 13. and if you look up any live performance, you will see that theyre no amatures. i’ll admit that brendon does get a little lazy with the vocals at times, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the ability.

their new record will definitely be different, but amazing none the less.

Misshelle | 11/16/2007, 8:41 pm EST

They are really a good band!!!… I mean, if they decided to make their record live is because they are talented!!

Their music is awesome and I know that the new album is going to de great!!!!!!!!!!!

Hannah | 11/16/2007, 8:01 pm EST

I’m ashamed to say

!

god | 11/16/2007, 4:14 pm EST

yeah, normally i’m against autotuning and such, and i love panic, but this shit has a high chance of sucking if theyre dropping the electronically-enhanced vocals and synths and dancebeats

Dennis A. | 11/16/2007, 2:32 pm EST

umm… i heard a live recording of you guys. I suggest you stick with the computer-tuned vocals..

JR | 11/16/2007, 2:25 pm EST

well…. i really hate these guys.

and they got the rolling stone cover.

god dammit

where is my queens of the stone age cover?
