Dave Matthews Plays New Song “Round and Round,” Talks Guitar Technique: Exclusive Video

11/15/07, 6:41 pm EST

When Dave Matthews stopped by the Rolling Stone offices on Tuesday (en route to two gigs at West Point to reward the winners of a pep-rally competition), he took a few minutes to chat about his guitar-playing technique and how he deals with forgotten lyrics onstage. Then he broke into a hypnotic riff and started to sing along. Click above to check out footage of Matthews playing that new track, “Round and Round,” which he debuted onstage in New Jersey Tuesday night.

Hey ELO, DMB has released 9 albums in the last 15 years, not including the 31 other live albums released. You dont know shit, so dont comment. They fill stadiums about 80 times a year so i guess all those fans are wrong and YOU are the all-knowing music guru. You’re an idiot!

Ridonkulus | 2/14/2008, 9:12 pm EST

yo, Ham On Rye, ELO, and Paul Blake.. GO SUCK A FAT DICK. Not every dave song is going to sound amazing, this is a simple tune compared to his collection of sounds. Secondly, good music will always come from people with kind intentions. I dont know who you listen to but I can tell theyre rubbing off on you.

I hope everyone has some type of music that allows them to escape the stress of life. How can anyone put down a musician(DMB) that sings songs about enjoying life and friends, and makeing love and memories??? Try listening to the lyrics after you’ve experienced tragedy. It will lift you out of that dark place and allow you to notice the flowers again. Thanks 4 saving me Dave!!

WhiteRabbit | 12/29/2007, 1:54 am EST

hey man for all who love dave you should love him, for all who hate dave you should hate him. The music is all about individuality and personal taste and personal voice, what sounds good to you sounds good to you, but don’t say someone elses music sounds bad just because you don’t like it. And if you like it, let someone else dislike it, don’t force your beliefs on others. Just love each other.

hey metal heads | 12/21/2007, 2:15 am EST

why don’t you do us all a favor and go cut yourself and see how much you can bleed?

Paul Blake | 12/5/2007, 6:36 am EST

To be hated…that is a sign of true success.

dmbcowboy | 12/1/2007, 10:47 pm EST

hey elo,
i think your an idiot for calling dave a one trick pony, obviously you hate something that you have never listened too. You say hes a one hit wonder in 1997-2007 when he put out before these crowded streets, everyday, and busted stuff. which all have hits on it you fucking retard. let me guess what music you like fall out boy and taking back Sunday thats why your opinion doesn’t matter.

Indeed…Led Zep were among the best of the best live bands (if not “the best” during their prime).

Rick | 11/30/2007, 2:22 pm EST

Look at how many people go to there shows. BEST LIVE BAND!

Anonymous | 11/29/2007, 6:00 pm EST

This guys music is amazing

sub-genre | 11/29/2007, 11:26 am EST

Yeah, but apples and oranges don’t grow from the same tree. Think of Led Zeppelin as being a root from which different styles and combinations of metal music have branched out from (including various forms of alternative genres).

Anonymous | 11/29/2007, 6:57 am EST

I agree with Mr. F but not with the way he said it. We all know there are different kinds of metal. Lumping Zepplin with Megadeth is like comparing apples and oranges.

pro vs. | 11/29/2007, 2:18 am EST

No metal? How about 10,000 volts of industrial punk metal with a twist of staggering melodic hooks…too heavy and dark for you? Too bad!!! DMB is talented…but only ignorant narrow-minded snobs would stereotype and describe metal music listeners (including Led Zep fans) as being “uneducated”.

Mr. F | 11/28/2007, 7:36 pm EST

Metal Shawn G,
Dude, just face it, Dave Mustaine and mullets flip burgers and try to kill themselves. Try because they aren’t dedicated enough or thoughtful enough to go through with it. Society would benefit. You check any high school yearbook, “Metal Heads” certainly are wastes of space. Don’t hate DMB fans because they actually graduated high school, went to college and have jobs that directly lead you to what you are qualified for, cleaning my toilet.

Mr. F | 11/28/2007, 7:22 pm EST

If Dave Matthews is so bad, how come anyone that has made any lasting impression on the music world has nothing but positive things to say about him? They all want to collaborate with him and be part of what he is doing. I love ignorance because it increases the value of education.

hey now | 11/28/2007, 6:04 pm EST

Even if you do not like dave matthews.. you have to admit his songs are very creative. I have not heard a band like DMB in a long, long time. I would prefer DMB over springsteen and mellencamp. but, even if you dont like him, he is good at what he does. I don’t like metal bands, but some of them are good at what they do.

Anonymous | 11/26/2007, 12:04 am EST

I agree that there are lots of talented bands out there, dmb being one of them but not the only one. That’s not what I was stating. But at least you recognize that they’re talented, it’s the ignorant fuck who’s heard crash on the radio and think they suck based on that alone that I have a problem with. However, you should do your homework my man. They’ve made plenty of good songs in the last decade and they’re currently in the studio making a new record with a whole “new” batch of songs. And no, I’m not a 17 year old girl, far from it. I think that’s a little stereotypical to say

ELO | 11/25/2007, 4:29 am EST

Do people still listen to this guy??? Kind of surprising since he hasn’t made a good song in ten years. Yes, they are talented but they are a one trick pony. There are other bands out there with way more talent and the Dave fanatics need to chill a bit. Quite frankly there are few people as annoying as the Dave Matthews fan who thinks that they are gods gift to the world because they like his music. Congrats, you and every other 17 year old girl out there are DMB fans. You are so sophisticated and we should all bow down to your musical (listening at least) prowess. Right.

Anonymous | 11/21/2007, 10:24 pm EST

lol, those who haven’t heard dave’s music fall into the ignorant category… it’s not their fault they haven’t been exposed. those who have heard it and think they have no talent are stupid and unable to recognize a good thing, i.e.: you.

btw, i’m curious… are you basing your opinion on the two songs you’ve heard on the radio or have you actually taken the time out to listen to songs like halloween, watchtower, dreaming tree, gravedigger, etc.. listen to those and then tell me if they suck.

MSG | 11/21/2007, 3:53 am EST

Aural masturbation.

Metal Shawn G | 11/20/2007, 5:26 pm EST

in other words, “if you don’t anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

How original. How useless.

Marc | 11/20/2007, 5:01 pm EST

Love the hate that is felt in all of the comments left. If you don’t like dave then why are all you people wasting your time reading about the people who do love and care for DMB’s music. Get a life or maybe a ear for music.

re: metal shawn g | 11/19/2007, 2:16 pm EST

“Those who don’t like dave are either ignorant and/or stupid.”

Are you 100% sure of that? Suppose somebody else in the world had not heard DMB’s music, but was listening to music you have never heard or been exposed to.

Anonymous | 11/19/2007, 8:50 pm EST

was i not clear enough in my statement?

listen, you don’t have to like dave, or anyone else for that matter. we all have our different tastes and we’re entitled to them. but you can’t be ignorant enough to not recognize talent. you may not like him as an artist, but you can’t deny that lyrically, vocally, and instrumentally this is one of the best bands of our time. there must be a reason they sell out every show they play, am i right? their musical influence cannot be denied.

re: metal shawn g | 11/19/2007, 2:16 pm EST

“There are 2 kinds of people on this planet… people who love dave and people that don’t. Those who love dave are of superior caliber”

Are you 100% sure about that?

re: metal shawn g | 11/19/2007, 2:16 pm EST

I just finished reading this whole thing now for the first time and I must say, what’s metal’s deal?

It’s clear to me you didn’t get enough attention as a child. There are 2 kinds of people on this planet… people who love dave and people that don’t. Those who love dave are of superior caliber, you call them yuppies; I call them smarter than the average bear. Those who don’t like dave are either ignorant and/or stupid. You my friend are just plain stupid. You’re exactly the kind of person that’s not wanted in the dmb community, so continue to be a hater with the whore that you need to lure in with the coke (so sad). Good luck on your endeavors, seems like you’re gonna need it.

RuKidding | 11/19/2007, 9:21 am EST

Still amazes me that Dave does stuff with Rolling Stone after the whole 90s mixup but oh well. Anyways, cool mix in with Kill the King in the new Round and Round, and as far as hating on Dave Matthews goes. Who said Metal or heavy grunge was real music? Anyone can set their amplifier as high as it goes and play the same repetitive guitar riffs and have a drummer who learned to play on trash can lids, but then again I guess that’s REAL music!

x | 11/18/2007, 6:39 pm EST

what’s a yuppie?

vince vega | 11/18/2007, 3:36 am EST

Metal Shawn G,

If you don’t like Dave Matthews, we will imprison you!

To put it in layman’s terms, if you don’t start liking Dave Matthews right now, I’m going to cry!

Metal Shawn G | 11/18/2007, 2:21 am EST

Maybe I offended someone who was a yuppie? I don’t think they have yuppies any more. Oh. Maybe it was what I said about cheese? Hey, don’t feel bad, I like cheese, too. I don’t think I’d invite a bunch of my friends over using cheese as the main selling point. Cocaine usually works better.

But then again, I wouldn’t invite guy friends to my house, if I had coke. What do you think, I’m fuckin’ crazy? I would have to invite some woman that I always wanted and never was able to get!

Apologies to my cheese loving friends!

However, I will not apologize to my coke whore friends!

Metal Shawn G | 11/18/2007, 1:59 am EST

I’m sorry, you’re right. Cool Jazz is the shit!!! Now I’m going to buy some crystals and windchimes. Perhaps a pair of sandals.

Metal Shawn G | 11/18/2007, 1:50 am EST

Man, you really CAN’T say anything bad about Dave Matthews on this thing, can you? Nothing like fair and balanced!

I think the “unicorns” thing is still there because someone really thinks it’s a real Dave Matthews fan taking a real shot at it me!

You know what? I lied. That REALLY IS a Dave Matthews fan taking a shot at me!!! LOL

Dave Matthews Rules? | 11/18/2007, 1:24 am EST

There’s nothing that rocks as hard as acoustic guitars and clarinets jammming out some COOL JAZZ sound stylings!

It’s music for upper middle class yuppie assholes who have friends over for wine and cheese fondue! Edgy stuff!

Re: Mr. F | 11/17/2007, 11:22 pm EST

You’re right. Very, very well said!!!

Listen Mr. Shawn G, saying mean things about Dave Matthews proves that you’re just a meanie, and if you can’t say anything nice, you shouldn’t say anything at all, mister!

Dave Matthews rules, sir.

Dave Matthews makes me dream of rainbows, sunshine, and unicorns! So, there, you big dummy!

Mr F, I would like to say that I think you’re terrific, life’s terrific and the world is just like a gigantic chocolate sundae thanks to Dave Matthews and Barney!!!

Mr. F you remind me of lollipops and the laughter of small children. Ain’t it great to live in a Dave Mattthews’ world?

Shawn G, Heavy Metal is the tool of SATAN! bad boy, bad boy!

“I have many friends that feel the same way this person does about Dave Matthews but at least they are secure enough to admit he is a talented song writer. Jealousy and criticism are the biggest compliments.”

Agreed. Well said.

pro vs. | 11/17/2007, 3:38 pm EST

It’s highly unlikely that any serious music artist would speak so badly about a band or other music artist - it’s unprofessional behavior, even for any struggling musician (it displays lack of maturity, integrity and self-confidence). The same can be said about commentors verbally attacking and insulting other fans at these comment boards.

Mr. F | 11/16/2007, 7:15 pm EST

I can’t take anyone seriously that
criticizes Dave Matthews without any actual thought behind it, not to mention you can’t even send emails without typos. If you had the dedication, I’m sure it would take you the next two weeks in your parent’s basement to figure out your mistakes. I guess spell-check is too difficult for you. Swear away duder!

I can’t believe how slow the video is. I have a 8 down 1 up connection and still I needed a half an hour too see it. Anyways: a nice video

Mr. F | 11/16/2007, 4:38 pm EST

I love Mellencamp and Springsteen. I have seen both in concert and respect them greatly. I think Dave Matthews would be the first to speak about their superiority.

Ed | 11/16/2007, 4:24 pm EST

I saw John Mellencamp the other night and he kicks large amounts of ass. Mellencamp is the best songwriter in America today.

Mr. F | 11/16/2007, 3:47 pm EST

At least Ham and Rye isn’t too angry. I have many friends that feel the same way this person does about Dave Matthews but at least they are secure enough to admit he is a talented song writer. Jealousy and criticism are the biggest compliments.

Ham On Rye | 11/16/2007, 12:44 pm EST

you’re a fool. enjoy the elevator music, genius!

Sincerly, Bukowski, Supersonic, and Metal

Angry, no. I just have to mock people that are a joke!

Mr. F | 11/16/2007, 12:40 pm EST

Sounds like Ham on Rye should stick to his angry Bukowski. Dave Matthews is so relevent in our society that it frightens people. Everything he is involved with is successful for a reason.

Ham On Rye | 11/16/2007, 11:52 am EST

I’m sorry folks, I just have to say it: When will this guy just croak already??? What a bunch of white bread garbage!!!
